MISUNDERSTOOD Song Lyric Confessions
Fieldmouse83
28-10-2016
I'm hearing impaired so misunderstanding lyrics or not having a clue what they are despite having heard the tracks hundreds of times is quite common with me.

Just one example: For DECADES i thought the words on the intro to madness song 'One Step Beyond' (the third line) were 'the match is down the road' of course its actually 'the nuttiest sound around'

Over to you people - come on dont be shy

You know the song that goes like "I wish that I could be like the cool kids"? I used to think it was "I wish that I could be like the cookies" with extra emphasis on the "oo" part.

I'm sure there's a long-established thread here about misheard song lyrics

A very old one this: when I was young I could never work out why Herman's Hermits were singinging, 'last night I met a new girl and her name was wood'. From Something Tells Me I'm Into Something Good.

For donkeys' years I'd assumed that "She leaves me in a cool, cool sweat" from Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" was actually "She leaves me in a cuckoo sweat".

I only found out otherwise recently. Probably didn't twig earlier because it *did* kind of fit as something semi-nonsensical or in line with "cuckoo" meaning crazy, or whatever.

I still like "my" version better.

I thought the Timewarps line about known as the pelvic thrust was known as the perfect roast

You thought the line California Dreamin was Began To Pray? They sound nothing like each other

I think he means he thought "pretend to pray" was "began to pray"
(Have to admit I thought that too)

From memory, I was pretty sure it was "began to pray" too!

I agree that the Mamas and Papas sound like they're singing "pretend to pray", but the thing is... theirs wasn't the version I knew first.

Now, tell me what you think that one-hit wonders the River City People are singing in their 1990 cover and it all makes more sense.

Alisha's Attic - I Am, I Feel.

I knew the real lyric, but I chose to mishear it.

"Don't cry my precious one cos" became "Don't cry my precious w**kers".

Also, another song I chose to mishear, Metallica's Master of Puppets.

"You boring bastards, obey your master".

As grimtales1 said before your post it was the line Pretend To Pray the poster I quoted thought sounded like Began To Pray. I thought they meant the words California Dreamin sounded like that which didn't make sense to me.

Now I know what line they're talking about I thought it was Began To Pray as well

The easiest way to find an old thread in Digital Spy is not to use the Digital Spy search function as that hasn't worked for ages. Just type in the thread title (or what you think it's called) followed by Digital Spy into Google and it brings up threads and website articles on that subject

OIC, no worries!

I'd assumed you meant the "pretend to pray"/"began to pray" bit that I assume Billy_Value was talking about in the first place.

Point was that if anyone knew the 1990 River City People version first- and if they're around my age, that's quite possible- it explains why they might have thought the line was "Began to Pray". 'Cos I'm pretty sure that's what they *are* singing in that version!

There's a line in Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Rage Hard that I misheard as "I don't know which way to go, my love's like German snow"-(actually "like driven snow")- conjuring the image of Hollywood caught in a Berlin blizzard.

i always thought that the lyric "too dirty to clean my act up" from christina aguilera's dirrty was "too dirty to clean my attic."
