Didn't the Doctor get the big birdy things to go for him in the church by saying 'I'm the oldest here', so with the vicar being older then the bride, they'd have gone for the vicar, presuming age was a factor. Oh, I don't actually know, I just know I loved ever second of that tonight and thought it was wonderful

And in saving her Dad Rose stopped the action of her needing to go back and see his death...the so she doesn't and hence her dad dies etc....this is the paradox. This is what the problem in the episode was. What we saw in the episode was the universe dealling with this paradox. It is not a weakness in the story. It is the story. The universe tried to sort out the paradox the best it could without causing space and time to impolde on itself. The result was a stranded Rose and the Doctor in 1987 , a car repeating the same bit of a journey near to Rose's Dad and worst of all a weakness in space and time itself which allowed the horrid creatures through from where ever to take advantage of the situation.

Still catching up but I think they paid two visits. The first time, Rose said she wanted to see her Dad so they went back to Jackie's wedding day. After that Rose asked to be there the day her dad died...

The clue came when the doctor shouted "I'm the oldest one in here" in order to attract the Reaper to him. I think that means they were taking the people in the church 'oldest-first'. However, on second thoughts, why then did they nick all the kids in the playground? Hmmm - now I'm not so sure!

Older things repelled them. That's why they could not get inside the church until the paradox occured. This strenghthened them and the age of the Doctor no longer mattered.

We now see where Rose gets her intelligence and ability to work things out.

The bit where her dad realises who she is was FANTASTIC. You won't see anything of that quality again on television for a very long time.

I thought Shaun Dingwall was fantastic as her father. I bet he usually plays serious roles rather than comedy. Not that he probably can't play comedy, just very good casting as Rose's father.

This episode has to be the most beautifully shot and edited piece ever on British television

My brother died in a road traffic accident in August 1987. I sat watching that with tears in my eyes, and rate it as one of the best things I've seen in a long time.

By strange coincidence, one of the hymns we sang at his funeral was God is our Strength and Refuge, to the tune of the Dam Busters March (see Channel 4's schedule for 7pm this evening).

Must just mention, the music was very good too. Emotive at all the right moments.

Yes, I agree. One of the best performances by a guest actor in the series so far imo.

Great episode tonight, up there with Dalek and Unquiet Dead as my favourite episodes of the season.

Apart from the emotional stuff in the script (which was absolutely fantas... (NO - THINK OF ANOTHER WORD - OH BUGGER) ..tic), my favourite moment was when CE went to open the police box and found it was ... a police box!

In the "next episode" section at the end of this week's, we saw Rose drop from above London.

Here's my question (hoping that someone in the production, or at least in the know is reading this):

Rose seems to be dressed like Jenny Sparks in the first volume of the comic "The Authority", which was drawn by the show's concept designer, Bryan Hitch. Is this more than a coincidence, and an homage to Hitch's (and Warren Ellis' and Mark Millar's) work? It would be cool if this is so, and look forward to a nod toward "The Ultimates".

also in the trailer for next week what was that traveling in the time tunnel with the TARDIS??? could it be another time lord or am i reading to much in to it :P

The look on his face was just priceless! I wonder if that is what CE meant when he said in an interview that he would be without the TARDIS in an episode or is that still to come.

From the looks of next weeks trailer at the end RTD has upped the ante with the arrival of Captain Jack on the scene. Be interesting to see how the dynamic between the three of them develops in the remaining episodes...

Another point I meant to make earlier is the fact that, yes, as soon as I knew the premise of the story (Rose saves her dad, rip in timeline etc.) I knew that he would have to die at the end.

I wasn't expecting him to know that too, to figure it out, to save his daughter by willingly volunteering his life.

And the police box TARDIS was a magic moment!

FANTASTIC episode, agree it was predictable, and there were flaws but as mentioned, all time travel tales have problems. The Terminator films drive me mad.

Couldn't have put it better myself. A completely beautiful and thought provoking piece of TV.

The reapers were, quite rightly, merely an accessory to the main story. It's a great example of how versatile the programme can be. An as for the acting performances, who'd have thought that the young popstar who made a (IMO) v annoying little record could grow up into such a fine mature actor?!

I knew I loved this show before, but now... Tonight's episode blew me away.

I think I've missed something, why would here having two parents at home stop her from meeting the Doctor?
