Nobody has mentioned the effects yet so I'll just say I thought they were great. For the BBC.

Good episode overall.

Over 1000 people in the TV programmes forum, something tells me it was a popular episode.

One of the best yet. I've had a shite day today, but it made me shed a tear or two. Who thought Sci-Fi could do that?

If Rose had just been another screaming 'I'm in trouble, please save me Dr' sidekick, would anyone have given a damm about tonight's episode? ”

Spot on, a good example of this was in tonight's Confidential when Colin Baker is trying to strangle Peri. I remember in Peri's case hoping it would be quick and painless, lol! In Rose's case I really do care as to what happens to her.

What a brilliant episode. (Phew - nearly said Fantastic!)

It really drew all of us in, and there were plenty of tears all around. (Even from a first time teenage viewer).

I don't remember the old DW being quite so emotionally engaging! This is exactly what we need from the new series. Superb writing for a sci fi series!

This was the best episode of Doctor Who ever. It was just perfect. They might as well stop the series right now, because we'll never get another one that's even half as good as this. (OTOH that's what I thought about Dalek and I was wrong then, so let's hope I'm wrong again...)

I think the way the poll is going will make this the most popular episode of the series yet

Not a dry eye in the house.

Really excellent tonight - and all down to three characters: Rose, her mum and dad and a crackingly well written story. Although I don't think it explained why The Reapers didn't go for the bride, it was unusual to see children as victims - normally they are quite safe somewhere off screen!

I think I officially now dislike Eccleston's Doctor. I found that I was more concerned about the fate of the TARDIS than I was of him.

Once again Billie Piper was amazing.

Now, can someone pass me a hankie?

I voted excellent....involving and mature tv on a Saturday evening. Never thought I'd write those words!

On another note, anyone else find it strange that they go back to 1987, that CE introduces himself as "doctor", he travels in a police box, calls it the Tardis, talks about time but no-one seems to have a clue who he is????

I enjoyed this episode, I did think though that once they got all in the church the fear of the creatures was played up enough. The exact scene in question was as it showed a long view of the church and events going on outside. At that point it seemed to me not to have enough fear in it.

However in saying that I think it was one of the better episodes, but being a life long DW fan I like them all, I even ejoyed last weeks which got quite a pasting on here.

Maybe the bride was spared because she was pregnant? Who does the child grow up to be?

I think that was the point; we knew that Pete would sacrifice himself for the greater good. Rose also knew that this was the only possible outcome, however difficult it was for her.

She will think twice about trying to change anything else - or maybe that's the dilemma she will be forced to face at the end of the series?

I think we've become so drawn into the world of Rose and her family that the Doctor is now a bit part player in the way we feel about the series. I'm sure he'll have his big moment soon though. Must say I think Eccleston has really grown into the role now.

I think the fact that the effects have been barely mentioned (they were touched upon a bit earlier with regard to the reapers) is a very telling sign about the quality of the writing.

The effects were perfect in that they served their purpose and looked great but they also didn't overwhelm the show.

If every other post so far had been "Amazing special effects tonight!" then I think they would have failed in their purpose because this was purely a character/plot driven piece and the effects were just there to help them along the way.

A+ to all the modellers and animators and director for making them perfect for the episode.

tried to hold back the tears but gave up towards the end - bloody brilliant. The script was well written, the actors were great and i loved the whole thing - as someone said earlier, who would have thought that a sci-fi programme could produce such emotion? simply wonderful

That is an intersting point. Didn't the Doctor aslo say her and her groom were special too. I think he made it sound like they were spcial in an ordinary sort of way, just like everyone else....but he could ahve meant somethingelse...he seemed set on getting them married didn't he? Maybe the Doctor knows something we don't....

I really like CE as the Doctor and am enjoying his portayal of the role immensley. I'm not much of a David Tennant fan and am not looking forward to him taking it over - don't think I'll like him much as The Doctor.

I agree with you, I do think that we should feel for Rose, afterall she learnt a lot of home truths about her father and his and her mothers relationship and what he was really like, not to mention having to witness the death of her father.

However she did act very selfishly and that was all that I was highlighting, but I will concede that it was in an over zealous way lol

I do agree that she has learnt her lesson, well we can hope that she has And I do think that she will have a much better understanding of the Doctor and he of her and humanity as a whole.

I totally agree with you there and that it what I meant when I said that the end was obvious but fitted perfectly for the story told

Have you not seen that film, it's dreadful, apart from maybe the last half hour. Rent a DVD or something if you really hated Dr Who.
