Hi, thankyou for the help, ive tried working the answers out but unfortunately im still struggling to find them, ive tried to find other places that used to be in the boundaries of Yorkshire as well but i still can't find the answers. Does anyone have any answers & clues for the questions, i would be really grateful for this help again, thanks,

The West Ham question...

They used to play at Upton Park right? Upton is on the edge of the Wakefield city district. You say it's 2 words comprised of 12 letters.

South Elmsall.

"Arrives" on a timetable is usually shortened to "arr".

West is often shortened to W.

Put 'arr' in W and Ham gives: Wharram.

Another word for 'through' is 'per'.

The outskirts of a city is 'cy' (outskirts here being the first and last letters)

Put it all together: Wharram Percy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wharram_Percy”

This is truly amazing. I'm very familiar with Wharram Percy and Dringhouses, and would never have got either of those. To do it just by working out is incredible...

Does that mean you have the answers to all the others. If so, please share.

Of course, you don't get to see all the failed attempts: "Wuzzlbuh Nuggful? Nope... Baddish Maplugh? Nope..." etc....

(Sigh) You really don't "get" cryptic clues do you? You've flooded the Internet with your list of questions, and after much nagging from people trying to be helpful you've offered a few completely wild guesses that generally bear no relation to the question. (Or in some cases, don't even match the number of words or letters.)

Look, if I feed you one more answer, do you promise to leave us all in peace?

Here goes -- question 1: "Isle possessing band (10) (3 words)"

In cryptic crosswords, "Isle" is often "Mull".
"possessing" = "has"
"band" = "Try". (Google them if you don't know them)

Do an anagram of the letters and you get...

I can't really see how your getting either of these. As a side note, if a word appears in a cryptic clue it almost never appears in the answer. So if 'great' is in the clue it is unlikely to be in the answer.

OK, I can sort of see a bit of logic here.

I can't follow you here. Please explain why you think they may be the right answers.

I'll work through another example for you, which might help you get the feel of how these clues are supposed to work:

3. Turn leaves within same time as audiences (11)

I can see why you might go from 'turn leaves' to winter (although perhaps autumn would make more sense...). However, what the clue is actually doing is describing an individual letter. This is quite common in cryptic clues. They give you a letter or groups of letters that you need to put together to make words.

So, what does 'turn' give us? Well you can make a u-turn in your car, so it might be pointing us to the letter 'u'.

'leaves' then suggests we might have to remove 'u' from one word to give us a different word. Perhaps a word meaning 'within the same time as'.

Once we have that, we then need to add a word meaning 'audiences' to the end to get the final answer.

OK, 'within the same time as' could be 'during', which luckily has a 'u' in. We can get rid of that, leaving 'dring'. Hmmm.

Now the audience in the theatre is often call the house, and since the clue uses the plural form we can try 'houses'.

Put them together: dringhouses.

Never heard of it! But, Google has: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dringhouses and it's in Yorkshire. Yeah!

However, this highlights the problem people will have. The answers have words like 'dringhouses' and 'wharram' in them which I suspect most people (well, me) have never heard of. That's why it would be so helpful know the process you are going through to come up with your answers.”

Outstanding!

What a great post

There are loads of words that band could relate to (and isle). There is no keyword(s), as you would get with a normal cryptic, to indicate that the answer is an anagram.
As written, the clue suggests a word for isle which has inside it a word for band.

The best I've been able to come up with for this is "Man of Steel" (Isle of Man and steel band), but since it doesn't actually exist yet I'm not sure it would count!

I did actually think of "steel" for the "band" but the obvious Sheffield connection it didn't point towards a place or feature in Yorkshire.

Dabbling around on t'internet I found some much easier clues that were trivial and took literally seconds to solve:

Found in odd or even numbers (4) - 1 word.

Oddly in Spain I dusted nude (8) - 1 word.

Admittedly I'd heard of / been to the places named, but I don't think it should take anybody with reasonable experience of crosswords too long!

That's the problem with this quiz - I'm not confident that they're "playing by the rules" all the time. There are no anagram indicators in the "Isle" clue while the "What about" clue has two (possibly)... Oh! Just got that one!

What about embracing it through great makeover? (13) (2 words)

Start with "What". "About" usually signifies either an anagram or that the word should be broken up and placed round the remainder of the clue. But we then also have "embracing" which covers the second possibly meaning of "about" - so we re-order the letters W-H-A-T and place them around the rest of the solution. "it through great makeover"

When you travel from A to B through C you could say that you travel "by" C. So part of what you need to include is "it by". That should be ringing some very loud bells for anyone even slightly familiar with Yorkshire.

Finally, include a re-ordering (makeover) of the letters G-R-E-A-T.

Spoiler
to get a nautical event that happens every August.

OK, I can see that, but now this takes the quiz into events, rather than just places, which is interesting....

To be fair, I don't think that the preamble ever specified that it was only places.

If events are in, then quite likely it also includes buildings, monuments, stadiums, perhaps even famous people. Old Mother Shipton's Cave, anybody?

So have you finished the Yorkshire one now? What were the answers you got? A bit of feedback would be nice - it's supposed to be a discussion, but it's mostly just you setting us homework.

No.1 could be Apple Bobbing

No.5 could be Cat's cradle, though I'' not 100% sure why (beyond a rad being an angle)

There at so many threads on the same topic, they probably lost track.

OK, well I think I'll bow out of this thread.

Those aren't really cryptic clues - they are at best simple word play. You should be able to crack them with a little thought. Good luck with your quiz.
