ED: Nana Barton and Moira's sister?
glen20

How about Julie Goodyear as Nana Barton (possibly a recurring character)?

...And Blythe Duff as Moira's older sister?

I think that Julie Goodyear is too well known as Bet Lynch, but it'd be great to see Nana Barton definitely, as you say she could be a recurring character or even just appear as a guest for a few episodes leading up to /after the funeral.

It's ridiculous if she turns up now when she didn't when Holly died

It would also be good to add another older character into the mix, especially in the absence of Betty, Edna and Alan.

Is it so ridiculous?

Both her sons are now dead, and no doubt she blames Moira for both.
Ther are plenty of reasons they could use to explain her absence from Holly's funeral, health problems, perhaps she even has Hannah staying with her.

I was thinking of Dawn Steele (Monarch of the Glen) as Moira's sister.

Thelma Barlow or Patricia Routledge also come to mind for Nana Barton... as does Amanda Barrie who I could definitely see giving Ross a good telling off a la Gordon Ramsay!

I cannot imagine Patricia Routledge ever doing a soap.

Dawn Steele currently has a main role in Scottish soap River City

She could be old enough - 19 and 27 years older than Bill Ward and James Thornton respectively. A bit young to be Anthony Quinlan's grandma, but then look at Gillian Kearney!

I had a niggling feeling that she'd had a small role in Corrie.

In the 1960s when she was just starting her career and Coronation Street had morals and values with huge emphasis on characterisation. But now, I very much doubt it.

Also says they wanted her to continue but she wouldn't commit long term.

Is she still acting??

She did Keeping Up Appearances and Hetty Wainthrop, her standards aren't t that high

She is almost ninety, though. She might not feel up to the demands of a soap.

Nana Barton is Moira's Mum isn't she? It's always Moira's Mum that is mentioned.

I do believe Moira's mum has also been mentioned a couple of times and is alive and well however Nana Barton is obviously James and John's mum. Nana Barton was mentioned quite a bit in the early days when the family first arrived however when she didn't show up to John's funeral in 2012 and all mentions of her ceased I assumed she's died off-screen. Its only recently they've started mentioning her again.

Dawn Steele would be perfect as Moira's sister - they're very similar in appearance and mannerisms and have the same accent.
