Soap questions for university essay.
Hi everybody, my cousin is staying with me this week and is doing a project on British soap operas for her media course. There are some questions on there that I told her I'd ask here on the forum for a general response. Many of the questions are about soaps in general, some are about specific soaps and some are about multiple soaps. So please only answer questions that relate to a soap you do/have watched. The questions are:
Who do you believe the initial soap opera genre was targeted at and why? What characteristics make a great soap character? Out of all the soaps you watch/watched, who is the greatest male character each soap has produced? Out of all the soaps you watch/watched, who is the greatest female character each soap has produced? What ultimately led to the demise of Brookside? What has each soap's biggest ever mistake been? Do you think the soaps have a long term future depending on whether they stay true to themselves or adapt to suit the audience? (Realism/Sensationalism) Should soaps pander to Social media views to please them or stick to attracting the general audience? What led to the success of the Den and Angie storyline that attracted 30 million viewers at its conclusion? Do you think The British Soap awards are a positive or negative thing for the soaps? (Do they lead to too much effort put into 'Best Spectacular Scene' etc. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking time out to answer if you can.

Lots of varied questions here!
A couple of questions from me before I reply ... Has your cousin formulated these questions herself or have they been given to her? What do you mean by 'the initial soap opera genre'? Are we talking 1960 Corrie or the much earlier American 'soap operas' that were created by advertisers? |

The British soap opera genre that Corrie created that was the groundwork for the other soaps that would follow. (A pub, strong families etc) |
