Hollyoaks is very different compared to other soaps it appeals to the younger generation with very sensationalist stories good looking characters several criminals and murders a year. But this is something that has popped in my head is this the future of Soap? The other 3 big ones have all been becoming more sensationalist to try and appeal to newer generations and hook on ratings so does anyone else think in the future the other soaps will become more like Hollyoaks?

For me out the three I watch Hollyoaks is the best and my favourite, idk about it being the future because I think each soap has a generic idea of who it's audience is and what they like and I think the stuff Oaks does wouldn't be favoured by the loyal fans of the other soaps. I love Oaks but it does have a ridiculously high murder rate so it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.
My mum loves Hollyoaks, I guess its main audience are younger than the other soaps but I think it just depends on what kind of stuff you like to watch.

Hollyoaks for some reason seems to have a decent enough budget to pull off the sensational plots. Whether you're a fan of the show or not, the Halloween stunt this year from the set design, to the stunts and the camera angles - looks lush. It actually looks like a spectical - they've pulled it off rather well.

The problem with the show is that it seems to constantly trying to out-do itself, which to me, makes it all a bit ridiculous. The 'yearly stunt' has to be better than the last. It's a lot more like an American drama than a UK based soap opera. If it keeps on the way it's going, there's a danger it'll burn out in a few years.

Hollyoaks is my favourite ATM. It's unrealistic but I don't care and most of the stuff this past year has been very enjoyable.

What I really like about it is that it's not like the other soaps. People critisize it because of that but it's style is what makes it special.

Let's hope not for the good of the genre, I'd you can take it for what it is I suppose it's a decent bit of fizzy pop. Luckily though for every TOWIE and Oaks, there is Neighbours and River City that are more line with what soap is all about

This year Hollyoaks has turned over a new leaf and compared to the previous few years the change is great.
We have had some great storylines like Jade's cancer, James's abuse from his Father, Jude's return and the list could go on.

It's also hard to believe that Bryan Kirkwood is still in charge because it feels so different from his work.

What do the ratings tell you?

Yes! HO is tbh and its stared with Lynsey's death on 2012. Where as we've been told before then in a number of soaps characters will die but not which ones, even when Danielle in EE died it was very heavily hinted at a death, Lynsey's death was not expected at all. No one knew she was even leaving and that was such a popular twist with the shock factor and sensationalism. HO did that again and again and the other soaps followed on. DTC grabbed that too, Jane's return in EE was just as shocking as Lynsey's death and the rest of it is soap history.

Hollyoaks is the present of soap. All of the other 3 have copied it in a desperate bid for younger viewers - though I'm not sure why, as almost nobody watches it.

It explains a lot about why the 3 big soaps are as crap as they've become, to be honest. At their worst, they're now just bland pretty characters playing out nonsensical sensational plots aimed at internet fandoms. They still have their better moments, thankfully, but I often feel like I'm watching something aimed at teens.

This is exactly how I feel too.

Over the years I have watched every soap going but Hollyoaks is the ONLY one I have never taken to and I have watched a few rubbish ones!! So from a personal point of view I hope this is not the way forward for other soaps.

My biggest fear for Hollyoaks is that'll it meet the same fate as Brookside.

They had the massively successful "Body Under The Patio" which a lot of people will remember.

Then it started to go downhill with the Virus on the Close, the incest storyline etc.

There's amazing people with stunts, unexpected deaths etc and then there's chasing ratings for the sake of chasing ratings.

By this logic Transformers and Fast & The Furious movies should win Oscars. The most eyeballs watching something does not equal quality.

It is a amazing considering how low their ratings are compare to other soaps how big of a budget they get, must be advertising that pull in the revenue.

The show has improved, although I hope this death clear out is it for a while..

Not a chance. Hollyoaks is sensationalist rubbish. Made for the twitter generation with a short attention span. Most soap fans want proper charactersation and character led drama. Not issue led drama where the character changes personality overnight just to suit the storyline.

At one stage there was 4 serial killers in the one village. That is just totally absurd. The show reminds me of Scream Queens. Big elaborate death scenes and the victim is forgotten about after 2 episodes

Uhh a soap opera fan that wants character led storylines and proper charactersation is like saying that death metal fans want pretty melodic catchy tunes that are played on Heart radio. Opera means sensationalist plot led drama

Hollyoaks is good, but I think its peak was 2006 - early 2009. This again was a Kirkwood era, but I think with all these sensational stories and murders and stunts, it will ruin the show eventually.

This x 1000. Have not watched the drivel for over a year and do not miss it at all.

Hollyoaks should have stayed the wonderful teen drama it was, not turn into this sensantionlist BS they call a soap.

As for the orginal question, no it is not the future not in the slightest.

Its precisely becuase of these that Corrie and ED have existed for so long.

If you base a soap entirely on sensationalism, ultimately you have to keep outdoing yourself, until eventually you end up with a Colby-style alien kidnapping, the removal of the last remaining inch of credibility and the death of the show.

Hollyoaks is a teen soap. Who primarily hire good looking young people whether they can act or not. The others aren't teen soaps. So, no.

Never forget seeing the beginning of the soap awards back in 2007. i saw this young fella arriving at the start and I had no idea who he was, but I remember vividly, thinking to myself 'He's pretty .. he must be in Hollyoaks' - and he was. lol

That was Guy Burnet, who played Craig.
He, incidentally, got the part because he looked so much like Jodi Albert who was to play his sister. Nothing to do with his acting ability. He also had to take his top off for them to see him topless. That was nothing to do with acting either! That probably summed HO up back then!
