I wouldn't be opposed to changing it for a more international symbol if that's the only problem. I think we could stand shoulder to shoulder with the Germans to remember our war dead. The ordinary German soldier wasn't a Nazi, they were just doing their duty and following the lies of politicians. Which is the same argument I would use to remember the fallen British soldiers of recent wars, including the Iraq debacle.
The poppy is not a symbol that glorifies war or celebrates victory. It's a sad symbol that represents the tragic waste of human life in all wars, by all nations. If anything, it should make people stop for a few minutes and remember the costs involved in blindly following our leaders. That old saying..ours is not to reason why etc couldn't be more wrong. Stopping to reason why is exactly what we should all be doing. Others were on the wrong side (Germany, Austria, Italy, Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania) and again have no desire to go near the subject. So it's actually a very delicate area and not everyone would on board with the British way of doing things. |

It's more than a poppy, it's minutes silences, wreathes on the centre circle and soldiers on the pitch.
And if course, if players refuse they get death threats Can you not just switch the channel over if you don't want to see something? |

The England and Scotland fans actually had something in common for once. |

Most don't use any at all. France and Belgium do have an Armistice Day which is a national holiday but use their national flag as the symbol instead and a few other countries just have a simple memorial day.
If Fifa hadn't made a fuss, this would never have been an issue, and poppy day would have been forgotten until next year. |

That's the point. The poppy has been a well established part of all of our lives. The Germans, and Balkan States are hardly likely to throw in some controversial symbol because of this.

The FA's plan was to wear the poppy on their shirt though for the Scotland game which is strictly forbidden under FIFA rules (the rules state for a FIFA match that only the badge of the football association can be displayed and nothing else, with no exceptions).
Fifa are as corrupt as they come, and make up their own rules, and enforce them as they wish, plus they have a long standing hatred of us. If they hadn't made a fuss, no one would have cared. |

But they didn't do that, they wore them on armbands, which had been allowed before.

I've never got on with the idea that FIFA or UEFA specifically hate England, they're generally just feckless and terrible to everyone.
Dub2 though, definitely hates the English. |

With the poppy, they are being seen to be doing things. I agree that its a problem and should not be in football, but it really should be at the bottom of their priority list. Its like they refuse to tackle corruption (including their own), human rights violations in Russia and Qatar, racism, homophobia, sexism, religion, and we can probably add sex abuse too. Similar to police persons, who would rather book a person for a parking violation than tackle the drug dealer standing on the corner. |

I think they should properly deal with the dreadful crime of kicking water bottles on the touchline.

That's another of your facts is it?
The issue of a poppy embroidered on a football shirt and the presence of serving soldiers on a football pitch is what we should be talking about. My position is softening, reading other well constructed arguments on this forum and this thread. I still do not agree with it, but i appreciate that this should be one of the least things on fifas list to investigate and worry about when people are being killed just building a stadium for the world cup in Qatar. They should also be preparing for violence in Russia. The European Championships should have alerted them to problems with Russian fans - its going to be absolutely terrifying for British fans traveling there in 2018. Who in their right mind would go? |

A bit rich, from the person who stated in this forum that ALL followers of Islam "brainwash their children against the west". Perhaps you should get your own "facts" in order first before letting your religious intolerance and Islamophobia stink up the forum and derail yet another thread?

I questioned you about your statement on the police, which you ignored, as you do most things. If it has taken comments on this forum to soften your stance on Fifa, and look at at the really serious stuff they have done, and are doing, then your head really has been in the sand. A couple of people have accused you of being a WUM now, so maybe that is the case, if you are seriously claiming you were unaware of the depth of corruption surrounding Fifa. |

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/38368144 So FIFA have had the nerve to fine all four home nations a paltry amount. How do they justify fining England more than Scotland I wonder. Quote:
Fifa has fined all four home nations for displaying poppies during World Cup qualifiers around Armistice Day.
England and Scotland players wore armbands featuring the symbol when they met at Wembley on 11 November. Wales and Northern Ireland's respective games featured displays to mark the event on the pitch or in the stands. England have been fined 45,000 Swiss francs (£35,311), Scotland and Wales 20,000 Sfr (£15,694) and Northern Ireland 15,000 Sfr (£11,770). |

The fines are pathetic.
The simple answer is, call off the game until players are wearing the correct kit. |

They probably see England as being the "ringleaders" of the campaign.

England are the big association so get the bigger fine.
A fine was always going to be the only punishment and it was locical that England would get the bigger fine |

The Republic of Ireland have been fined a much smaller amount (around £4000) for wearing a 1916-2016 logo on their shirts before a friendly in March to mark the Easter Rising 1916 :

They have claimed England have been fined more for being at home, but they have also included punishment for spectators wearing poppies.
I hope no one tries to defend that action. |
