Interesting development on this story today with FIFA opening disciplinary proceedings against the Irish FA over that Easter Rising commemoration message they wore on their shirts in that friendly match.
It looks like they're trying to get all their ducks in a row in order to issue the poppy punishment against the England and Scottish FAs - who I don't imagine are now in the Irish FA's good books for bringing that shirt message to FIFA's attention solely to cite a precedent to benefit themselves. |

It wasn't either of the FA's that dobbed them in, it was professional media whore and Tory MP, Damian 'snitch' Collins who did it.

and this is why you should not politicize an england international with a poppy.
you set a precedent. this time its a cause you believe in, but next time it will not be. Its like when you allow religious freedoms in the workplace. If its prayer time for one religion every few hours, then its "prayer time" for me too. Which i will take having tea and cake. Blanket ban is needed, its football not the house of commons. |

I know they are a huge media circus, but do people actually care that much about internationals?
Why not just withdraw from the whole shebang and concentrate on the leagues? |

It's quite remarkable that FIFA didn't already know about this. I mean, it's not as if the Irish and Swiss FA's arranged the game between themselves without FIFA's knowledge. I've never given it much thought until now, but I always assumed such games were scheduled, or at least ratified, by FIFA, and that there's certain administrative and logistical rules they have to sign-off on to ensure it's a legitimate game, which I'd have thought includes knowing which strip each team will be wearing. Even if that's not done before the game (or the Irish FA did a switcheroo), I'd assumed there would a FIFA rep. at each affiliated international game to ensure it's all above board and goes off without any difficulties. I'm amazed that the only reason FIFA know about this now is because it's come up in relation to the England/ Scotland game, and to be fair to Damian Collins, he probably didn't expect this to be news to FIFA either.

I think they should do away with Friendlies..........that would leave a manageable number of International games, say 4 a year if we're in a 5 team qualifying group

And whats that got to do with football?
Nothing whatsoever. You might not want remembrance and football to mix, but it doesn't mean everyone feels that way. |

If its prayer time for one religion every few hours, then its "prayer time" for me too. Which i will take having tea and cake. Blanket ban is needed, its football not the house of commons. It will be interesting to see how other countries take this. The recent Iran vs South Korea world cup qualifier saw the Iranian FA urge supporters to turn up for the match wearing black, which is an internationally known symbol of Islamic militancy, and they also urged fans to chant slogans and sing songs in praise of Islamic martyrs. Now, this was not quite the same as putting a symbol or message on a shirt, but now that it is pretty clear that England and Scotland are going to get away with this, how long will it be before some sort of symbol representing "remembrance and honour to the 9/11 martyrs" or some other such inflammatory message starts to appear. After all, if you're a militant Islamist (and there are a few of those around in the middle east), all the symbol would be doing would be to "honour their war dead"...... "show respect for those who have died in a holy war"........ "give remembrance for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice" I'm quite sure we will be very upset when they commemorate the 7/7 bombings in that way, but that's not how they would see it. They see Jihad as a noble, honourable, sacred cause that is worthy of remembrance. Would they do it if they knew that all that would come out of it is a paltry fine..? You can make your own mind up on that one. Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. |

And noticeably, despite the holier than thou attitude of the egg chasers this week, neither the Welsh or the Australian teams are wearing poppies today.

I see Southgate has said wearing a poppy is part of being English. Quote:
"The poppy commemorates a lot more than that, it is a history of what we are as a team," said interim boss Southgate. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37895843"It represents the team. It is a very important part of history and tradition of what we are as a nation, to have freedom of speech to make statements as we see fit, owes to those people who gave their lives in two wars. That's crap. The poppy is not part of what the England team is. It's nothing to do with football, let alone England. He talks about freedom of speech but expects all the players to wear a poppy. He should shut up and leave it to the FA to sort out. Adding a poppy to the shirt makes it part of a uniform. It's quite a recent thing to do. In the past they had a two minute silence before games on remembrance weekend but no one expected players to wear poppies. I think wearing a shirt with a poppy printed on it is meaningless. Imagine how it would work in everyday life. |

After reading about the disgusting hassle Streatham Rovers had to put up with on Saturday it is lucky we have the likes of Poppy Watch around to make sure that Poppies are worn by everyone.
Otherwise the Cookie Monster could have gotten away with not wearing poppy on BBC1. |

This morning a bus passed me and it had a poppy stuck to its front. Its got to the point of madness. Poppywatch is despicable To a poppy shaped bit of peperoni on a pizza: "If the fallen could see them, they would weep" was the tag line. I actually believe the fallen would be crying, but for different reasons! |

I think (and hope) that Poppy Watch is a piss take. Read through some of the other posts, definitely looks like a spoof to me. I laughed at it anyway, particularly this one
Its like many things on Twitter made to get people who get wound up about very little and jump onto their moral outrage box to jump up and down in outrage and I am betting it has worked. |
