4K with Blu-ray

Hi guys,

New to the forum but could really do with some advice regarding 4K. I've looked through countless sites but can't really find the exact details I want.

Basically, my wife has just bought me an LG 4K TV (LG55UH661V) as a surprise. I already have a Marantz NR-1506 receiver with 4K passthrough (not upscaling) HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 so I understand that any 4K source I play the receiver will be allowed to 'pass through' unaffected.

My question is regarding Blu-ray. If I purchase a regular Blu-ray player with 4K upscaling will it reach my TV (through the receiver as upscaled)? Also, if I play a regular Blu-ray via my current player which doesn't upscale will my TV automatically upscale the standard 1080p which is passed through the receiver to 4K?

I understand that upscaling isn't a good as actual 4K, I'm just trying to figure out how to get the best 4Kish picture for as cheap as possible.

If you set the Blu-Ray output to 4K, I can't any reason why the receiver would cause any issues. That said, the TV will already be doing upscaling for freeview, freeview HD, Sky HD, Virgin HD anyway and probably does it as well as most Blu-Rays with upcaling built-in.
If you have a Blu-ray at the moment, I'd just use that, save the cash and put it towards an actual 4K Blu-ray player next year, they're already coming down in price with Panasonic's 2nd model being £200 less than the first one.

I have been playing with the idea of buying a 4K player but don't really wanna be spending £400-500 if I really don't have to.

I guess what I'm asking is, as I don't have any Blu-ray ultra disks (and probably won't for a while) will my 4K TV upscale the regular Blu-ray disks played though my non-upscaling player via my non-upscaling receiver?

Yes it will! It has to do something with anything other than a 4K signal to make it fill the screen. You might find that a blu-ray with up-scaler does it slightly better but it is likely to only be marginal and only on the higher end machines anyway.
