I'm sure he's very nice but I find Arnaud's cooking to be utterly tedious. It's all very classical French, something chef's all around the UK (let alone in France) are knocking up every day. His is patently very, very good French cooking (and you can't blame him for cooking from his culture) but it has apparently almost no personality of itself at all.
If we're going to crown what is ostensibly 'the best chef in Britain' (although, y'know, not actually) I'd rather it was someone whose cooking was in some way original or memorable. Maybe not Michael O'Hare memorable but dear God, at least bring something surprising to the party. |

I would have thought it might be in the interest of local restaurants and hotels to have a good relationship with local colleges doing catering courses, giving students some work experience and getting the lecturer there for a few weeks in the holidays. They might get a good opportunity to to hire the best students and also a handy source of extra staff for big events.
Catering college does a great job up to certain NVQ levels but ultimately the best restaurants take staff trained under other top chefs. ( That's why those restaurants can get away with paying poor wages to the highly trained. ) As for Gary, he'll probably get 4 weeks hol mid July- mid August. IDK what his exact role is but I expect with 5 kids and masses of paper-work & admin, it might not be practical for him to be sent to do college business in his hols but who knows he's clearly still passionate about learning. |

Maybe not Michael O'Hare memorable but dear God, at least bring something surprising to the party. On Masterchef are they looking for something that represents the future of Brit creative cooking or potential? Can you imagine Masterchef asking the likes of O'Hare or other past memorable contestants of GBM( many of them Michelin HeadChefs) being asked to make a hot lamb sandwich/show they can fillet x,y,z? Seems to be two different briefs/programmes to me.( Reckon that's why the blonde bloke doing the wacky stuff got caught out. ) I know what you're saying about Arnaud's - but IDK nowadays how you distinguish European vs French vs Modern British. Maybe he's Modern French and he's offering a very creative contemporary version of it? ( He said his fave cuisine at home is Moroccan.) Like Gary he seems equally skilled with pastry and they are both very humble guys so very likeable. Come the final Gary will throw the kitchen sink at it and maybe Arnaud will get nervous. That 21 yr old woman is surely destined for great things even if she doesn't pip either of them to the prize. I'd like to think that the only 2 making the final decision is Monica & Marcus and that there's no commercial interference in that choice. PS Agree with the other poster - bring back that scraps challenge. |

I'm guessing/hoping he's said it's pronounced that way. I don't see Marcus and Monica both getting it that badly wrong, so they must have been told that.
I suspect Ellie could be out of her depth if creativity is called for.

That dark chap, Wayne? Beard like a sporran. Wonder if it'll grow all down his chest in a sort of hipster wide stripe.
