I know several died building the Hook Norton viaduct near me. And the pity of it is that it's long disused! Now a nature reserve. Those men were paid in tokens that they could only use in the company shop for food and drink at inflated prices, even though Hook Norton Brewery was extant at that time and still is! No unions in those days.
