With the sad passing of Ed Stewart in January this year, has any announcement been made who will present the show on Christmas Day this year? My money, sadly, is on Annika Rice, but I sincerely hope it isn't her!

With Tony now back at the Beeb, is there any chance he will be presenting it?

Why are you assuming there will be an edition? There's no inherent reason why there should be.

If actually aimed at children (r2 sometimes says it is a family station) rather than nostalgia Justin Fletcher would be the obvious choice.

I don't think Tony Blackburn would be keen, he hated doing it when he had to take over from Ed Stewart.

A short clip survives from 1981 when it was on R1 and 2 including some of his jokes,

but seems the programme was soon renamed to the weekend breakfast show.

Tony made no secret that he hated being sidelined from daytimes to Junior Choice at the end of 1979, mind you time is a great healer and I would imagine he would not dismiss the chance to host a one off show once a year.

However he's not back at the BBC until 1st January 2017 so it certainly won't be this year.

It was a vehicle to let Ed return to the station once a year. I don't see the need for it to continue.

Perhaps Tony Hall will conscript Gambo to present it!

I would like to hear a previous show broadcast as a homage to Ed Stewart and then just finish it there.

IMHO Junior choice was a show that was dated in the 70s never mind 40 years later lets leave it especially with the passing of Ed Stewart earlier this year

I was actually listening to Ed on his last ever Junior Choice Christmas Day show.

It was so sad he passed. He seemed so full of life and he was still on form. RIP.

It would be nice to see Tony doing it, although he did confess to hating his 1980 stint doing it.

I have a few years worth recorded to re-live the great memories of Ed, so will play out one of those Christmas morning.

Maybe there will be a 'best of' as a Christmas Day tribute to Ed.

I was told that there may be a longer (2 hour) version of the tribute programme that was broadcast earlier in the year. If it goes ahead I suspect it will include all the old Junior Choice favourites. Probably wouldn't go out on Christmas Day though.

I remember Tony very reluctantly reciting "See-Saw Majory Daw" one morning on Junior Choice. You could really tell he didn't want to be doing that show!

The shows over the last few years were not a true recreation of Junior Choice anyway. The original show was much more diverse in the music played, with the classic children's songs forming only a small part of the (usually chart/oldie based) requests. The notion that it mainly played children's songs is just retrospectively romanticising and reinventing the past.

As far as I remember it was a chart song then a children's song, and so on...

As was I and, as you say, he seemed on top of his game. I was devastated to hear he had died.

Yes indeed.

there was a various assortment of comedy records played regularly as well-Bernard Cribbins hole in the road song. Terry Scott, my brother are just two that spring to mind but there must have been a few others

It was a request show, and that had an influence on the records being chosen. Parents and grandparents kept the old favourites going. They also played current chart records if they were requested, but there was a large selection of other records including TV theme tunes. I seem to remember the 'Theme from Black Beauty' being played most weeks for years as was 'White Horses' by Jacky'. There was even a disco version of the Star Wars theme, along with other music from film scores of the day. The Wombles, The Muppets, The Smurfs, and The Goodies provided a lot of material when they were popular. Novelty records like Clive Dunn's 'Grandad' or Ray Steven's 'The Streak' , Bobby Pickett's 'Monster Mash' Rick Dee's 'Disco Duck' and many others filled the gaps. The Barron Knights and Chris Hill had their comedy records using hit songs of the day, but they dated very quickly.

I always enjoyed the recent Christmas Day specials but they barely scratched the surface of the material used.

I think Uncle Mac should be resurrected to present what was originally his show

indeed, but they were always going to go with the big ones if only on once a year.

The songs and artists you mention I hold a great fondness for, even now at 51, and hearing certain songs put me straight under my flanalette sheet, tuned to my Vesta £2.99 blue radio with a fake wooden speaker grille, from Woolies
