Having had a father-in-law with vascular dementia I agree that his portrayal is splendid, particularly in the moments when he actually seems "normal". Brilliant acting as it Laurel's very annoying insistance that she will cope - my mother-in-law was like that until a year or so before he became too hard to handle and she was poorly herself.
