So this has come out on Netflix today and ive watched the first couple of episodes. Its very good so far. Matt Smith has really captured the young Duke of Edinburgh well.

I've watched half of it, 5 episodes (it's my day off today) and it really is excellent.

I watched the first two episodes this afternoon and enjoyed them thoroughly. Very good production values and great parts played by Matt Smith and Claire Foy with John Lithgow as Winston Churchill.

I watched the first two episodes today. Thoroughly impressed. I was quite astonished to see John Lithgow (6'4" and American) playing Winston Churchill (5'6" and English), but he actually carries it off extremely well. Excellent casting all round, excellent sense of period, beautifully done. This is what 'Victoria' could have been if ITV had anything like Netflix's budget. And I liked 'Victoria'.

I haven't watched any yet but it's been heavily hyped this week on TV and in the press, more than any Netflix show I can remember. Sounds like it lives up to the hype too.

Excellent production, and I speak as someone who remembers (apart from the abdication) the events first hand.

I feared this was going to be some American style trash. But it's really good so far, seen the first two episodes. You can tell they have flooded money into it, it's like a big budget film.

Very very good series, a shame us Brits did not make/fund it first.

There is already a second series in production apparently. It will have another five series going all through the queens life.

It's made by a UK production company, Left Bank, with a mainly UK cast, crew and locations and our UK subs would have used for funding it.

Seen half of episode one and seems really good. However I didnt like the operation scene. Found it a bit graphic. Anyone who gets squeamish at scenes like this may want to look away.

Just finished all 10 episodes. It was sumptuous all the way through and really well done. Can't wait for series 2.

Have binged on six eps so far and whilst I was half expecting to be disappointed ( as one so often is when a programme gets so much hype ) I was hooked, all in all a very good watch.

Is it funded by any British money?

One would assume so as there are British subscribers to Netflix.

I've just watched the first two episodes and, I must say, they were excellent. The whole thing is just stunning to watch, it is absolutely beautiful! The end of episode two, with Queen Mary arriving (adorned with a flowing black veil) and delivering that solemn bow to the daunted new Queen, was very powerful and quite moving I thought.

I can't wait to watch the rest!

I'm being greedy now but 10 episodes just wasn't enough.

The Crown really is compelling viewing.

Fabulous casting, scripting and costumes along with superb location shooting.

This has BAFTA award (s), written all over it.

Thought it looked fantastic, with the attention to detail - very classy. Not entirely sure about Claire Foy and Matt Smith, but loved Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret. Think the smoking was overdone as the cause of the King's illness. Also some parts didn't ring true - would Prince Philip really have been disapproving of the young Queen going on a Commonwealth tour and leaving the children, when they would have been brought up pretty much by nannies anyway?

I thought Claire Foy does the young queen very well, but then I have been an admirer of her acting talents since 'Little Dorrit'. She absolutely nails the dreadfully affected royal accent, yet still manages to engage on a human level. Matt Smith is somewhat hamstrung by the fact that he looks nothing like the young Duke of Edinburgh (the same is true of Jared Harris and King George Vl). Instead, both have tried to engage their characters' personalities - and successfully. George Vl was quite a tragic figure - a deeply human man who had greatness thrust upon him. Now that he is dead, I hope that they will cut down on the smoking. That point has been made. Not much tragic about the DofE, though. He may have been frustrasted in his ambitions, but the compensations weren't that bad. The man has a history of admirable good intentions and speaking without thinking first. Smith brought that over quite well, I thought.

You make some good points there, I think I will view with more appreciation.

It is a period drama we should not sanitise it and rewrite history to meet todays wishes.

If this was on BBC One or woe betide ITV I wouldn't have gone near it. However the production values of Netflix make this a must see. Perhaps I'm becoming a tv snob

It sound like something dad may like. Hes now in his early 80s.
Seems like Netflix is starting to make some good shows.
If it was on the likes of BBC1 or ITV on a Sunday night like most of them types of dramas tend to be on then I may not have watched it. For I tend to listen to the radio on a Sunday night in my bedroom between 8pm-10pm.
I did give up on Bloodline though 2 or 3 shows in to season 2.

Just finished the whole of series one in a just over a day marathon.
Great show, wonderfully cast, and as already mentioned, great production values.
Just wish the proposed sixty episodes had already been filmed so I could continue watching.

That is an interesting comment. After Stranger Things, it was clear that Netflix can deliver.
To be fair to the BBC, we had Happy Valley and Line of Duty (this year? - but also previous series) - both excellent, that spring to mind.
