It's nice to have the option. Many of us don't.
How so?

I've always found it the other way around to be honest with the TV snobs tending to stick with the BBC and dismissing Netflix. Hopefully this stunning series will change a few attitudes.
Hope so because Netflix are working more closely with UK and European production and making more native content availble and I just hope that some of the European drama is availble on Netflix in the UK because we have to wait so long for BBC or Channel 4 to pick it up.

But produced by a British company, Left Bank Pictures. The show is British-American. It really is laughable when I see people call the show American just because an American company provided the money for it (which as others have said comes from people all over the world, including the UK).

Netflix seem to be beginning to create lots of shows in other countries. They're not doing it because they want American shows; they're doing it because they want shows from other cultures/languages/experiences.
And should be congratulated for investing and bringing us drama from other countries including our own.

This is the first time I've watched anything on Netflix but certainly won't be the last if The Crown is anything to go by! It is a superb piece of television and I am trying not to 'binge watch' it but it's proving difficult.

My question to you is this...........will it be brought out on DVD as my Mum would love it but can't get Netflix (well she probably could but doesn't want to).

Yes I imagine they will. Other Netflix originals have been, like DareDevil for example.

Check if your mum has the Netflix app on her TV, set top box (sat, cable, freeview) as the app is on a wide range of devices and obviously if she has broadband. She could watch The Crown for nothing with a 30 day free trial. She could browse a whole host of similar dramas, good documentaries and she may even be pleased to find some old favourites.

I've had difficulty in the past with persuading my mum to even have a freeview box, once she had it she loved it. Sadly no longer with us but if she was I would have signed her up myself for this show alone.

Other Netflix originals tend to cost between £15 and £25 on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Just noticed on Google maps part of the set visible at Elstree Studios.

The mock up of Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street can be seen next to the Big Brother house!

Thanks for that. Her TV isn't very new but she does have Virgin TV and broadband so I'll see what she's got.

There's a code in this week's Radio Times for Netflix free for a month or up to £7.49 discount for existing subscribers.
I took advantage of that code today, and have very much enjoyed my first two free episodes, and I am looking forward to watching the remainder of the series over the next few days.

For those who have complained about the excessive smoking, have any of you watched any movie classics from the 1940's and 50's? People really did smoke that much, even in their big love scenes, just watch any old Bette Davis film.

As someone who grew up in the 1950's, I remember that time very well, and my only small complaint is that the Queen's hair was not as long as shown in the film when she arrived back at London airport after the King had died.

I am very impressed with John Lithgow as Churchill. I remember waiting in Downing Street in 1953, to take a photo of the great man with my Brownie box camera. Unfortunately I snapped a minute to soon, and all I got was a photo of his chauffer, but at least I saw him.

Watching episode 2 I realised that John Lithgow was Dick in 3rd Rock from the sun. What a transformation I would never have thought he could play Churchill but he does it brilliantly. I am enjoying this and think it has been done beautifully but I do not seem to be able to watch more than one episode a day unlike other series.

First time I have watched something on Netflix. Excellent production values and top notch cast. Huge difference watching something in 4K. Makes it a more cinematic experience. Peter Morgan always seems to get the tone of these royal biopics just right.

I'm kind of enjoying it, it's alright. I'm just sick of the same motif repeating itself

'Member of royalty family wants to do something......politicians then tell them/ the queen they can't as the standards of the monarchy needs to be preserved'.

I get it! The makers are making the point that the monarchy is a poisoned chalice that brings many advantages but at the sacrifice of personal satisfaction. But we've already understood that!

I'm a few episodes in and

Spoiler

It is restaging historical fact. Life tends to be like that for a lot of people: ie. wanting to do something only to be frustrated by other influences. For the royals, it is on a grander scale than it is for the rest of us. The aim of the series is to dramatise, as accurately as possible, the Queen's life from her marriage to, presumably, the present - or whatever the present will be by the time it gets there. It will take several years to complete. Don't forget that Princess Di and Camilla are a series or two down the line.

That does not seem to fit with most of the articles about it. It only seems to have a vague resemblance to reality, enough to keep the Americans happy.

Being foreign in the UK I knew the general story of the royals of course, but not the details. Very interesting. I had never heard of the London fog/smog either. Needless to say when watching I've had Google open as well to read up on certain things. Learned a thing or two.

I thought the show was amazing, you can tell it had quite the budget behind it. Such attention to detail, beautiful costumes and great acting. Very impressed.

As for the whole British/American debate: maybe there should be a 'TV: Netflix' subforum. So many great shows come out on Netflix now I think it deserves it.

Anyway... after three episodes I'm beginning to think Claire Foy is miscast. She's usually a good actor but I just don't see the Queen when I look at her.
That's probably because you're looking at a young woman who just started her new job and is not 100% confident just yet.

From what I've read they'll recast ever few seasons. Fingers crossed they'll be able to continue as I'm very curious to see who they will cast as the older Queen we know now.

I have watched it all now and it's excellent. I'm 60, so I do remember my parents talking a lot about the abdication, Wallis Simpson and about Princess Margaret not being allowed to marry Peter. These issues were still very much alive and being discussed by the public at the time.

I think Matt Smith is great as Prince Phillip. At first I couldn't get Dr Who out of my head, but he did engage me into his character quite quickly.

I am enjoying all the characters actually. I don't think it matters that they don't look like the real person. The acting and the gorgeous costumes and sets do enable you to get into the roles. I really like the detailed storylines and that they haven't rushed through it all in 3 eps.

It's hard to believe that it's the same actress playing Wallis Simpson and the butchers wife in The Missing. What a transformation.

Really enjoyed the whole 10 episodes, but with the budget they had, they had some huge gaffs!

Episode 3 starts with the caption 10th December 1936, and we see the two young princesses riding their bicycles wearing dresses and cardigans (not a coat or hat in sight in the middle of winter), but even worse all the trees are still in full leaf. Not even a hint of a leaf turning for Autumn.

Love it and now at episode 5!!! Hate when they refer to the King or Queen of England....not accurate!!! When the King died in the morning did they not suppress the news as they did not want a royal death announced in the Evening Papers...far too common. It had to be announced the next day in The Times???

I have now watched the whole of the first season and whilst I agree that dramatising history leaves much conjecture of what is actual fact and how facts can lets say can be stretched a little, this series has dealt well with all the important parts of what happened, the relationships between members of the Royal family especially the relationship with Margaret and Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Philip's displeasure with his new role. The political relationships were very well portrayed especially the tense between Eden and Churchill and also between the Palace and Parliament or rather the cabinet.

He died in his sleep during the night and was found by staff at 7.30am , the announcement was officially made from Sandringham at 10.45am that same day after the morning papers had gone to print it would have made the later editions. Delayed slightly so they could try and get news to the Queen so she didn't hear it via the press.
