Yes, this does round off his affair with Sonia storyline. Maybe they quickly wrote these scenes just as they decided to sack him. At least it looks natural, as we already knew of his affair, rather than contrived or rushed, like with Tommy.

It was meant to happen at Christmas wasn't it. I wonder what we will get then.

What surprises me is, he always worked with a very small amount of characters, couldn't any of them tell what Marc Anwar was like

It all worked out perfectly for Corrie really. If he was in the middle of a different storyline then his absence would be more difficult to explain. This actually works so well that if it hadn't been reported we would never had known he was sacked in those circumstances.
