soap families that flopped
The mortons (corrie) the soapstar family (emmerdale) the ferrairas (eastenders) etc. Could they have worked under a different producer?

The Carters seem to be flopping. One already gone and two to go next (Lee & Babe)
Of course we still have Mick, Linda, Johnny, Shirley and Tina but its sad to see them fall apart as they had huge potential had they all stayed together intact longer than a couple of years. I can definitely see Johnny and Tina being axed next. |

maybe they shouldn't b on this list cos they're better now but i thought the Nazirs in Corrie were a flop at first but i like them now. The dad (Kal) was their weak link i think. Sharif is crap too. now that Kal and Sharif are gone, they're better
but i don't like what they're doing to Alya, she's turning into a bitch |

The Moons (EE). I don't mean Alfie, Spencer & Nanna but the extended family of David Essex, Tyler & Anthony

Back in the 80s Corrie had a flop of a family called the Claytons. They were in the show for a matter of months before they were written out.

![]() I think the Mortons had every possible combination of a soap family within that one grouping. Single dad, wayward estranged mother, feisty older daughter holding everything together, a pair of twins (one the comedy stooge and the other more straight laced and sensible who becomes a policeman) an early-teenage girl and then a primary-aged son from a different father living with the single father ... all living in a tiny three-bedroomed house. No wonder viewers couldn't take to them! Oh and there was the ridiculous 'grandad' character too ... |

I can't remember the family name but the reality TV show "Soapstars" spawned a whole new family for Emmerdale. They were pretty much confined to the holiday park and didn't interact too much in village life. They left no lasting impression on the village and Emmerdale would probably like to forget the whole project!

That sort of nonsense is why I've never liked Emmerdale. I mean, what show in their right mind would let a family of randomly voted members of the public appear as legit characters? |

Emmerdale is an odd one with families, particularly those introduced en masse. They introduced three in quick succession that were a success - the Wyldes, the Bartons and the Sharmas all arrived within nine months in 2009. The dreadful Maceys and Spencers were the next large family units to follow but they got back on track with the New Bartons & the Whites. In the past they had the Tates, Windsors, Kings & Reynolds to name a few but on the other hand the Cairns, Marsdens, Calder/Westons & Daggerts didn't fare as well. Basically in the Dales the chances of success are nearly 50/50!
The safer option is probably to introduce a family over time once a character's popularity is gauged with the audience - look at the Blackstock/Lamberts. Bernice arrived in 1998, Diane in 1999, Rodney in 2000, Nicola in 2001. At the time Bernice was considered one of the show's central characters so it made sense to build around her. She married Ashley during this time and Gabby was added to the family on Christmas Day 2001. Val & Paul then arrived in 2004. Given all remained long term and Paul has returned a few times they've had a pretty good run. Nicola's mother Maureen also appeared as did Val's daughter Sharon. |

Home and Away - The Morgans
Hollyoaks - The Roscoes EastEnders - The Millers ( there's probably a more recent example but as I hardly watch it anymore - it's the first that springs to mind) Coronation Street - The Nazirs Emmerdale - The Spencers |

Probably none because it never happened. Soapstars was a "documentary style" series in which members of the Emmerdale Production team were shown selecting people with varying degrees of acting experience at an open audition process. Over a series of rounds the production team whittled down the actors and actresses until the final. They production team were then shown discussing how well (or not) the various actors and actresses had worked together and what the 'shape' of the family would be in various possible combinations. None of this was subject to a public vote. Neither was the construction of "Hear'Say" in the Popstars programme. Quote:
Popstars is a UK talent show series that was broadcast on ITV in early 2001. It was the first UK series of the international Popstars franchise, and was billed as a documentary on the formation of a modern pop group. The series began with audition rounds of aspiring singers (good and bad) performing songs before a panel of judges. The best performers were selected to come to London for further rounds of auditions. Over the weeks, the judges eliminated various singers from the auditions until just a few singers were left in contention. In the final weeks, five contestants were chosen by the judges to form the new pop group Hear’Say. The programme then showed the group recording and promoting their first single, documenting their first ventures into the music industry.
The first series of Popstars proved popular with audiences, and a second series (named Popstars: The Rivals) followed in 2002, but used a vastly different format, heavily influenced by the success of Pop Idol. Another follow-up, Soap Stars, used the original Popstars format to find actors for a new family in ITV's hit soap Emmerdale, but neither the show, nor the winners' roles in Emmerdale, were deemed a success. |
