Surely you could argue that they only paired off Paul and Ben because they were both gay? At least Ben and Johnny are two characters who were created in a more 'organic' way and unlike Paul weren't created simply to facilitate a storyline. I do take your point about not just putting them together because they're gay but I was never hugely convinced by Ben and Paul as a pairing (though with that said I thought Ben's relationship with Pam was brilliant.)
I agree with those on the thread saying that Ben should really be with Jay, the only character I see him having genuine chemistry with, but I don't think they'd go in that direction with Jay.
