Did anyone else enjoy this channel 5 show and wonder what it would be like now if it was still going

Loved Family Affairs at certain points in its life. I enjoyed its first year or so and thought it was a really inventive take on the soap genre and very much 'of its time' with some late 90s glamour. I remember thinking the The Lock was the most fashionable place on TV hahaha

I lost interest but started watching again around the time the Harts were killed off and show's reinvention and move towards the Stanley Street years. I enjoyed the initial years with the Stanley Street location but then it became too much like other soaps and lost some of what made it unique. It was trying to be a mix of Coronation Street and EastEnders and didn't quite manage it.

Huh, you know my only memory of Family Affairs is the very last episode! Literally the only episode I can remember. Not old enough to remember anything before that, I guess. So not sure what it was like other than that final episode

I always remember the opening credits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAgqwhT7wiU

My family used to watch it all the time, a great little soap that was apparently really good and was known for it's portrayal of LGBT characters! I vaguely remember the Costello's and the abuse storyline from 2005, as well as Pete Callan being killed.

In my eyes there were 2 versions of Family Affairs.

The Hart years, and the rest

I thought it was starting to find its feet and then they harshly got rid of the Hart family.

They were pretty much the show's central family until they were all killed off in one go in a boat explosion.

Brian Park killed off the Hart family didn't he?

I used to like watching Family Affairs; they had some decent storylines too.

Didn't it win an award as well?

Yeah, I think Kazia Pelka won best actress or best storyline for the Costello abuse plot?

Yes Brian Park axed the Harts, Poor Roy, he got happily married, only to loose his wife who i cant remember the name off, in the boat explosion.

Poor Roy, he was a miserable character at the best of times, it just made him worse.

I'm glad they got rid of the Harts because it give the show a new breath of life.

I hate when soaps have a main family that dominate.

To be fair though, Family Affairs was different because that was the raison d'etre of the show, that it was centred around just one family, something which hadn't been done much before. I thought it was a brave idea.

Precisely! Even the name of the show itself was in reference to the Harts and once they'd gone the show lost its family focus and ended up being a loose collection of random characters who all suddenly started living in a small street. Prior to that the locations had been open-ended with characters living here, there and everywhere.

Enjoyed it at the time but it's not missed.

Stanley Street appears in lots of adverts now, don't know if anyone's noticed? They must use it as a 'stock' British street set.

Did FA give to the biggest Hollywood star in Idris Elba? or did another British soap give rise to a bigger star?

I would say there were more than 2 versions. The Hart version, the revamped version which featured the move to London, the move to Stanley Street which brought many of the sets together into one street, and the era of the Costellos when I felt it was really at it's best.

I liked it in the early days, when it was about an ordinary family, but it just became like one of those dreadful US daytime soaps.

On the final episode well before it, the announcer says after nearly 9 years, a blown up house boat, and several thousand episodes later.

That shows the Harts domence

Just watched the final episode again, we will never know if Katie, come away from Rex alive, personally I would say the over way around as she had a statue behind her back.

And Nicola Duffetts character ended up being left standing there by Hale from Hale and Pace

I liked it, and I was in it twice when I was a Film Extra, Kate O'Mara was in one of the episodes that I was in.

It was filmed at Deerpark Studios, Wimbledon, and the adjoining set was where The Bill was filmed, and I was in two episodes of that too.

When Family Affairs finished The Bill used their street for some of their filming, including an episode when there was a fire in a nightclub.

The ending didn't seem as bitter as Phil Redmond was with Brookside,

The Bill also used the Stanley Street backlot for the Shockwaves episode too.

It's also been extensively used in music videos (David Brent, Cheryl, James Morrison, Olly Murs) as well as in advertising campaigns and billboard adverts.

But is that not how a soap is meant to be? Characters living in an area with different storylines.

Also I remember lots of families in the show so it wasn't just loose, random characters.
