I have a bitch who is probably over 10. She was not in a normal home environment until she came to us, so has a few health problems. She is on tablets from the vets, for various age related ailments. Goodness knows how many litters of puppies she has had over her lifetime.

Anyhow, sometimes when she is sleeping, she leaks wee onto her bed. She isn't desperate for the loo as this can happen minutes after she has been outside.

I will mention this to the vet when we're there in a couple of weeks, but just wondering if anyone else has had this happen ?

How long has she been with you and is this 'leakage' a new thing? Or has it been happening since you've had her?

Is there any blood in the leakage? For that matter, has she been spayed?

I admire you for taking on an older dog. We've done that on the last two occasions. Pups are fine but will usually find homes but fewer people will consider offering a home to an older dog but they need our love, care and attention too.

First I'd ask the vet to see if she's got cystitis as this can cause 'leaks'. Ste might need something like Canine Cystaid. Otherwise it might just be her age, old dogs can leak in their sleep without even knowing their doing it as the muscles relax and aren't as firm and tight as they once were. Another thought would be if she's been spayed as this can cause incontinence in some older bitches. If it's one of the last two nothing will prevent it and the best thing you can do is put some puppy pads on her bed to absorb any pee, old towels or sheets won't work the same as they'll stay damp and will cause 'urine scald' where she's lying on the damp patch. Some people also have success with putting a nappy on the dog at night but that depends on if the dog will tolerate it and what size dog you have, though you can now buy 'doggie diapers' which are specifically designed for dogs and come in various sizes.

Possibly urine infection or spey incontinence.
My girl had leakage when she was on prednisolone and was on incurin for a while - which worked very well. But because I prefer to minimise drugs, I ended up getting dog nappy pants. I tried dfferent types but ended up with an excellent make. They will even do made to measure. They are double skinned but you can also put something like a Tenalady in them. I always gave a treat after putting them on and it got so that when she saw me with them she would happily present her rear end! She was constantly licking herself when leaking and was much happier wearing them.

Thanks for the replies.

She had lived on the street, outside a restaurant, where she was constantly pregnant. We took her to be speyed and she came to live with us. It is obvious looking at her that she has had many, many pups and the vet said as much. She also has a leg that was broken as a youngster but never treated. She is about the size of a small lab.

The weeing is a new thing. She sleeps on a waterproof mat, with various fluffy towels and blankets, changed daily. Now that she's leaking, I'm changing her bed constantly. I don't mind, we have plenty of bedding.

It did seem like she had a couple of dry days but that was a few days ago. I have seen the puppy pads in our local supermarket. Might give those a try for the next few days.

Thanks again everybody ☺

Our 8 year old bitch developed the same problem around 3 years ago, she was constantly licking herself and was dribbling urine all the time.
We found out she had quite a severe urine infection (which wasn't affecting her in any other way) and this infection took about 3-4 months to heal up, all the while she was either on Anti biotic injections or tablets.

Eventually the problem hadn't resolved, so we did yet another urine test and this came back clear so the vet decided she was incontinent due to being spayed. A hormone tablet was prescribed, 1 per day and this resolved the problem and she has been fine since. If this tablet didn't work she would need further tests, but fortunately it did.

Hope you find an answer soon.

Thank you all

Been confirmed by vet that it's not a bladder problem, but a speying incontinence problem. I have bought the pads for her bed.

Hi I have just given a home to a girlie similar to yours (stray on the street, used for breeding etc) she is not incontinent but not house trained either. I have been using these on our the carpet she uses as her toilet when she can't get outside in time

Has the vet given her medication for it? we've had a couple with spay incontinence and propalin or urilin work well as have incurin tablets. We cut a double quilt into 4 and stitched the edges so its comfortable but easy to wash and dry and put waterproof pads under it or use vet bed as it lets the wee pass through onto the waterproof layer but keeps them dry.

My whippet has started to have fits at night and empties his bladder so I've bought washable waterproof fleecy mats to go where he sleeps from Jacob's den. They're not cheap but wash and dry well, lock the wee away so nothing soaks through, don't rustle and are comfortable, he loves to lie on them. They're all made to order with a great choice of fabrics

I can recommend this brand

Bought originally for when she was on oral steroids, they have been called into service again. We are struggling with a urine infection at the mo. 7 days of antibiotics didn't cure it, nor did another 7 days - though it was a lot better and no more blood in the urine. So now 2 weeks of antibiotics to hopefully knock the infection on the head and praying it is not due to anything sinister.
