As I said above, it used to be current celebrities on the Xmas special. So that had to do two different shows at once. This is probably why Gethin danced the waltz with Camilla who was his current dance partner. The judges are generally more lenient in their marking on this occasion but Geth and Camilla did deserve the four 10s.

Hope we get to see Ian dancing with Denise again - they were a great partnership back in the day and tend to get overshadowed by Jill's Jive.

There have only been four years - 2010-2013 inclusive - out of the 13 Christmas specials to date (including this year) when the celebs were made up of randoms. Before and since it has been former contestants.

Yes they certainly did and this is coming from a Matt fan. Gethin was a lovely waltzer both straight and a Viennesse varieties I think re-watching the Gitterbug VT they were talking about his VW and it reminded me of a classy dance that was.

The current series' celebrities used to be on the Xmas special. Or at least some of them.
That was where they were currently in training and still in the show at the time and had a good knowledge of dance.

Never before has the week one evicted celeb been added to the Christmas show, especially when nobody else from this year has. I mean I'm sure most would prefer to see Lesley get another shot at a dance as she could really move and perform.

Were all the previous winners busy? They usually have at least one.I would like to see some of the former pro's back to partner them.

But as others have pointed out Melvin was denied the chance to do a DO. Yes he may still have been sent home but TPTB clearly changed the rules on the fly to accomodate Anastacia and the Xmas show is a way of making it up to him IMO.

Maybe they realised that how he left the show wasn't fair on him.
That's a good call actually and fair enough if it is the reason. I hadn't thought of that.

Sadly Ian has already said on Twitter that he won't be dancing, he said they'll be using one of the spare pros. I'm thinking only Brendan or Anton are tall enough?

Yes, I agree that's the reason he has been offered a place here, it's pretty obvious really, he stands out for his lack of success, like others, or his lack of being a novelty act.
Perhaps he got this for his silence on it?

No doubt he would have been sent home, he really couldn't dance and he most likely will add nothing much to this special.

It's a busy time of the year for a lot of people in show business.
I guess Melvyn was selected as the viewers of this programme will recognise him, he's available and given what happened, it would be considered a nice gesture to invite him back.
A PR slam dunk.

The fact that he wasn't very good at dancing, really doesn't matter.

But given the line-up, it ain't "must watch TV" is it? I never bother any year, it's really just an entertainment show.

Sorry to all Gethin fans but I'm heartily sick of seeing him on Strictly-related things now.

Denise is the only one I'm really looking forward to seeing again.

Six former Strictly celebrities will be taking to the floor for an all-star Christmas extravaganza on BBC One as the previous ballroom contestants return for a yuletide special filled with festive fun.

This year the leading ladies set to trip the light fantastic are:

Olympian and presenter, Denise Lewis (series 2)
Pop star, Frankie Bridge (series 12)
Writer and actress, Pamela Stephenson (series 8)

The gentlemen set to rock around the Christmas tree are:

Celebrity chef, Ainsley Harriott (series 13)
TV presenter, Gethin Jones (series 5)
Radio and TV host, Melvin Odoom (series 14)

I like the line-up. Hopefully they are all still capable of taking up where they left off.

Denise - and Ian? Might be Brendan.

Frankie - and Gorka?

Pamela - and Neil? Psychology gone wild?

Ainsley - and Karen? Whacky.

Getin - and Chloe?

Melvin - and Janette? Some dance that suits him?

MELVIN......MELVIN......WTF no one had ever heard of him and no one voted for him.....why is he back.
Because he got a raw deal due to Anastacia-gate.

Well done BBC - nice gesture.

Must be some sort of payoff to him, never before has that years first evicted celeb got to then carry on and do the Christmas show.

I don't think they've ever had someone who left the first week any year on any of the Christmas shows either.
Because no other contestant has ever been booted first, last or otherwise because their opponent bowed out of a DO.

The BBC also obviously appreciate and have rewarded the good grace shown by Melvin.

To the line-up, I would call it damage limitation on two fronts:

1) Make amends with Melvin
2) Dispel any rumours that the show is racist by making 50% of the participants black.

Still, he's hardly a fan favourite or anything, he did go home as he had the lowest public votes and he was low on the leader-board.

So? The point of the DO is to redeem yourself and fix the mistakes that cost you some votes. He didn't get that chance and was just tossed out on his ear when nobody else had that happen.

This is a nice gesture, to give him one more time to dance.

Let the man get a crumb of comfort from his Strictly experience - please...

This - much more eloquently put!!!

To be quite honest, that's the way the show worked for years and when they introduced the dance off, most people hated it. In past years that's exactly how he would have gone home. So yes, a lot of people had that exact thing happen to them.

Look I don't mind him in it, but it seems strange, he can't dance, wasn't successful, nor a novelty couple. Just smells of the BBC silencing him with this offer.

BIB: The words 'sweeping' and 'statement' spring to mind.

Who EXACTLY went home because Anastacia (or another celebrity) couldn't partici[ate in the DO???

Precisely!

So because you can't box or stereotype him, he should be barred from appearing for all eternity?

Who's to say he won't even win this.?? You saw what a different partner did to Anastacia...

Sorry, but your point contains more holes than a sieve.

I quite like the sound of this Christmas line up. Melvin Odoom though, I can see why they brought him back in some sense, but in other sense I don't!
