33. Wales Wales is forever stuck as a borderline country given that it once had a big scene to choose from, but most of those options have dried up now, and it's so small so you must rely on newer artists who tend to be on the rockier side, which is always risky. I would never want to get Wales as my good country again, even though it has managed to break into the top half of this ranking, with its second-best year to date! 9 Thorn Tree − Catrin O'Neill ( nunaney ) Quote:
Mostly what you will find if you search for unknown Welsh artists.
8 Show Me the Wonder − Manic Street Preachers ( Steven_P )Quote:
My heart broke for Steven_P when this was sent as he seemed so happy about it.
7 Cathy − Skinny Lister ( mikabv )Quote:
Such a typically jaunty mika entry 6 1963 − Remembering August ( AxG ) The video made me vomit.
5 We Are Now − Shake Shake Go ( Lola V ) 4 Teach Me to Fly − Shake Shake Go ( mikabv ) Quote:
Interchangeable folk leaves me devoid of an opinion.
3 Paraffin − Meadowlark ( Max_ESC )Quote:
Not quite convinced they aren't just Paper Aeroplanes.

The deadline for voting is Tuesday 27th December at 7pm, and results will follow shortly after. You may vote for your own entry/entries. The top 12 songs will progress to the semi finals, while the bottom 10 will have done disgrace to their country and never be seen again. Please be careful with countries that have two entries in this quarter final (such as New Zealand and Svalbard). If you would like to be 100% sure of the country you are giving points to, you can specify the song. (I believe anyone can vote, although there may be restrictions such as only those who have participated in DSFE (this year or otherwise) so I may need to be corrected on that) |

![]() 32. Latvia How ironic that during Pisa Beth and I were discovering whether Latvia should be bottom tier or not! Don't get me wrong though, Latvia still managed to send in some bad songs, but the top of the list is so righteous that it ends up okay! Bear in mind that Latvia managed 2 finalists since the middle of 2013, and doubled that this year alone <333 icon 11 Best Friend Forever − MyRadiantU ( phill363 ) 10 Karuselis − Grēgere & Roberts Pētersons ( TerryP ) 9 The Missing Ingredient − Palua Dukure ( EuroFoxi ) Quote:

31. Kaliningrad I kind of added Kaliningrad allll the way in Tallinn just to make up the numbers, but it wasn't until 2016 that it had its breakout arc, and here we are! Russia are obviously making serious plays to dominate ESC/the world for the foreseeable future, so it's no surprise that their minion nation would also have a fairly good year! 9 Bez Tebya / Prem'yera Pesni − Alessiee ( yoshi94 ) Quote:

44th place: Austria
Austria's music industry is one that tries way too hard to be indie, and suffers because instead of indie, we get four and a half minute long songs that either peak at the first 30 seconds or the last 30 seconds, so you've fallen asleep by the 2 minute mark anyway. Thankfully there was a little bit of fun for Austria too. 12th: Farewell Dear Ghost - Fire (DSFE 80) 11th: Parov Stelar ft Graham Candy - The Sun (DSFE 76) 10th: The Makemakes - Million Euro Smile (DSFE 73) 9th: James Hersey - What I've Done (DSFE 75) 8th: Agnes Milewski - Stupid Cupid (DSFE 82) 7th: Johann Sebastian Bass - Heart of Stone (DSFE 84) 6th: Avec - Granny (DSFE 83) 5th: Edenbridge - Alight A New Tomorrow (DSFE 74) 4th: Johnny Summerville - Radiant (DSFE 77) 3rd: Playing Savage - Bigger (DSFE 81) At first I thought this was an absolute mess, but it's really catchy and a great find for Austria. One of the very few fun entries for them this year which certainly helped, definitely underrated. 2nd: Rose May Alaba - Love Me Right (DSFE 78) First time an artist I've introduced to a contest returned, so obviously this did so much better. This was deserved though, although I'm surprised it came 3rd, there's an element of pride that helps me like this even more. 1st: Lola Blanc - Don't Say You Do (DSFE 79) Not even a competition. This would get my 12 in DSFE 79 now (sorry Mies, although I'm sure you could handle two less points...). Don't know what it is about songs like this that I love but there's just something to it because this is one of my favourite songs of the year. Average Score: 6.67 43rd place: Shetland Islands Not a groundbreaking year for baby Scotland but it was decent - some very good entries and then some entries I really didn't care for. 7th: Bishop Briggs - River (DSFE 78) 6th: Little Eye - We Are The Kings (DSFE 81) 5th: Lucie Silvas - Villain (DSFE 76) 4th: Harlaw - Wolf Eyes (DSFE 83) 3rd: Kerri Watt - The Wild (DSFE 77) I always forget that I first tried to send this for Scotland in DSFE 77, hence going for the Christie & the Dream Beats scandal because I was pushed for time so I didn't check their nationality (which usually doesn't have any effect but I got unlucky ). There's a reason I went for this and it's because it's great, deserved better.2nd: Rachel Sermanni - The Fog (DSFE 75) More dark folky music. <3 I don't love this as much as I did in DSFE 75 when it got my 12 but it's still solid. 1st: KLOE - Touch (DSFE 73) This was before I realised I needed electropop in my life and so I gave this very few points but it deserved to be a finalist, it was very good and I'd be surprised if we don't see KLOE again. Average Score: 6.71 |

42nd place: Iran
Iran basically consists of Mahan Moin and then the void of forgettable entries but Mahan Moin is so good that she single handedly lifts Iran to the heights of 42nd. 7th: Vampire Weekend - Horchata (DSFE 84) 6th: Reem - All That I Want (DSFE 76) 5th: Magic Giant - Set On Fire (DSFE 74) 4th: Roya - Lie (DSFE 77) 3rd: Mahan Moin - The World Is Mine (DSFE 78) I was really surprised when this didn't even make it to the semi finals, it was decent but not as good as anything else she's done. 2nd: Jasmine Kara - Imperfect (DSFE 75) Catchy, fun, decent. You could always tell it was going to stay in the semi finals though. 1st: Mahan Moin - Elysium (DSFE 81) This wasn't even close. I disliked this during the quarter finals then by the final it had grown on me a lot (I believe it got my 6 or something similar). I honestly thought this could win and it would've been deserved. Average Score: 6.71 41st place: Albania Albania is not pleasant to have, and the thought of a year with just one entry from Bebe Rexha (as well as none from Gabrielle Cilmi or Rita Ora) doesn't sound like the sort of year where they get their first win, but it happened at the hands of rising star Dua Lipa, who we may never see again because everything she releases ends up at 34 in the charts. Me: Edea Demaliaj - Ne (DSFE 83) - Don't get me started on this... 11th: Era Istrefi - Bonbon (DSFE 81) 10th: Alban Skenderaj - Duart Lart (DSFE 80) 9th: Enca - Dreq (DSFE 79) 8th: Dafina Zeqiri - Hate You, Love You (DSFE 73) 7th: Yll Limani - Najher (DSFE 82) 6th: Dua Lipa - Last Dance (DSFE 76) 5th: Ronela Hajati - Amini (DSFE 77) 4th: Elina Duni - Mos ki frike (DSFE 84) 3rd: Havana Brown ft Bebe Rexha, Savi - Battle Cry (DSFE 75) Maybe the most predictable Albanian entry but it was one of the best - back when Bebe was remotely classy and before she went anywhere near Nicki Minaj, she produced music like this, despite not featuring in the music video and not being prominent in the song. This is great, and had it been actually Albanian it would've qualified. 2nd: Dua Lipa - Hotter Than Hell (DSFE 78) I think Dua is past predictable and now everyone would be surprised if Dua was ever sent again because nobody would be that predictable. This is her best song and I don't know if she'll ever release anything as good as this again but if it does it'll chart so it doesn't matter. A deserved winner. 1st: Genta Ismajli - Kishe (DSFE 74) Whoops. Average Score: 6.73 And so we enter my top 40! Here are the remaining countries...

30. Andorra Despite only having three finalists, Andorra were actually okay this year! The topic of whether Spain/Andorra are truly good countries or not has died down a bit in favour of other controversies, though would most of us really want them as our 'good' country? 12 Won't Step − Electric Nana ( TerryP ) Quote:
DEMON.
11 Agosto − Alvaro Soler ( King Kunta )Quote:
Alvaro Soler overload maybe doomed this? It's not very good either way.
10 Salvaje − Fuel Fandango ( ChickenFromKiev )Quote:
So glad I get to slay this! I don't get how this won since the best parts of the song are where she's neither seen nor heard.
9 Inner Force − Diabulus In Musica ( andreas_esc )Quote:
See Edenbridge.
8 No Importa Que Llueva − Efecto Pasillo ( mikabv )7 No Intentes Amarrarme − Salvador Beltran ( Carlisle156 ) Quote:
Both jovial, if not interchangeable and generic.
6 Painkiller − Edurne ( ChrisROE Hughes )Quote:
Amanecer was sooooo underrated, and obv this is a very different type of song but it's dated.
5 Who's Loving You? − Auryn ft. Anastacia ( thengp12 )Quote:
This wouldn't be my first thought of duets that need to happen, but tbh after the decade Anastacia has, go for it gurl & get that d.
4 Loco Como Yo − Ana Mean ( aliyah101 )Quote:
Breezy but catchy!
3 Echo − Ruth Lorenzo ( phill363 )Quote:
Always up for a bit of Ruth, though I do end up comparing everything to Love is Dead.
2 Throw the Dice − Barei ( Carlisle156 )Quote:
I am this queen @ 2:40 watching Barei's genuine and relatable struggle. Robbed!!!
1 Love is Not − Sirena ( Yugimuto1 )Quote:
Icr if I heard this before DSFE or not but I feel like it's been in my life for more than a year. It doesn't have a moment exactly but I'm really on board with the dreamy vibe. Also robbed, though I would have expected Throw the Dice to qualify more.

![]() It's also not even my least favourite winner of the year. Finally please accept further reparations in the form of:29. Ireland This is one of the last few countries remaining with more than one 'red' song, so we're getting to the good stuff now! Ireland does have a fairly reliable music scene so you can probably make like 20th if you really cba, but like England it's hard to truly shine. 11 Letter to Willow − Wyvern Lingo ( Steven_P ) Quote:
I didn't remember this but I watched it again just now and it SO boring.
10 In Time − Talos ( MiesBouwman )Quote:
I didn't remember this but I watched it again just now and it SO boring.
9 Nervous − Gavin James ( ChrisROE Hughes )Quote:
I feel like a chemical reaction occurs when everyone registers a live performance that means they are physically incapable of enjoying it, so yeah, this was a mistake.
8 50/50 − Jessica Smith ( Pooley )Quote:
Basic.
7 Bitter Pill − Gavin James ( MiesBouwman )Quote:
I should like this as it has shades of Hozier, but it is pedestrian.
6 Call Home − Heathers ( phill363 )Quote:
Folktronica I guess this is? Hooks me during the chorus but then loses me again during the verses.
5 Smoke and Fire − Sabrina Carpenter ( jackel1234 )Quote:
Slightly robbed even though it takes a while to get rly good.
4 Stone Cold − Demi Lovato ( BethnalGreen )Quote:
A few players short-circuited when THE Demi Lovato made her intentions known, but did Beth give a toss? She did not, and we enjoyed it.
3 Speeding Cars − Walking on Cars ( ChickenFromKiev )2 Make it Better − Hermitage Green ( ChickenFromKiev ) Quote:
I hope we are okay now CFK!!
1 Hollow − Tori Kelly ( GreekFan )Quote:
I thought this would win in Venice! And then people stopped giving it points Poor GreekFan <3 but please take a place in my top 50:

28. Spain What I said about Andorra applies here also. Spain's year was slightly more impressive although that doesn't correlate with this ranking: 12 That Isn't You − Sofi de la Torre ( Yugimuto1 ) Quote:
Floating just out of my reach.
11 Hundred Miles − Yall ft. Gabriela Richardson ( MiesBouwman )Quote:
She's just talking.
10 Without You − Andra ft. David Bisbal ( Steven_P )9 Miracles − Serena Corleone ( Greecelove ) Quote:
Lol her voice.
8 No Soy Como Tu Crees − Ana Mena ( Pooley )Quote:
Loco Como Yo is much catchier.
7 Se Hizo La Luz − Rebeca ( nunaney )Quote:
This is just SO MUCH.
6 Ur Love − Diego Boneta ( jag02010 )Quote:
The unironic use of ur <3.
5 Breakfast − Anteros ( mikabv )Quote:
Not quite my genre but it's well done.
4 Are You Ready? − Abraham Mateo ( aliyah101 )Quote:
Every now and then I'm in the mood for the adventurous of obnoxious teens.
3 Sofia − Alvaro Soler ( BethnalGreen )2 El Mundo − Pablo Lopez ( TerryP ) 1 Asylum − Sara Serena ( Carlisle156 ) Quote:
Asylum! Severely underrated, but I'm not sure the video existed then. She is so chirpy and adorbs and her little wink at the end <3 Ofc it's in my top 50:

Just noticed that Lucy from DSFE was in the Armenian selection for Eurovision (mentored by Aram Mp3). She was doing quite well until she made the mistake of singing her DSFE song in the semi final, and finished last...

Carlisle's Top 50 Songs of 2016 - 50 to 46
50 - Netherlands: Anouk - Run Away Together - 22nd in Christchurch - Lurker62 Just breaking into the Top 50 is this Anouk song. She's not a newcomer to DSFE with a string of appearances but this one stands out as being one of my favourites. Her tone is stunning & I am really shocked how it did so poorly in the finals. 49 - Georgia: SALIO - Wayside - 5th in Andorra la Vella - Yugimuto1 I don't think anybody is more shocked than me that a Georgian song (albeit from an American-Georgian I think??) has cracked my Top 50. Not since the days of Katie Melua have I appreciated Georgia in this contest but this was quite good. It was a bit overrated at the time but a few months later when people aren't banging on about how amazing it is... it's really grown. Very good find for Yugi!! 48 - Netherlands: Celine Cairo - Hello Love - 13th in ISS - Gwen 404 Second appearance from the Netherlands already and not the last on the list ... I'm shocked I didn't give this more than a 6 in the final because it's a song I listen to quite a bit. Love her voice and the video is super cool too. 47 - New Zealand: Gin Wigmore - Black Sheep - 5th in Snowdonia - March Mornings This is definitely one of New Zealand's better entries (I just looked at their wiki page and wow @ their results this year!!) and Gin Wigmore has such a stunning voice. It's so unique and quirky but totally in a good way. I've known and loved this song for ages and it would probably be higher on the list had it been a new discovery for me. 46 - Croatia: Vlaho - Home - 12th in Christchurch - BethnalGreen Anybody who has hosted and seen my votes will see that I am in the minority of really appreciating male vocals. With that in mind, this song was always going to be on my list. Croatia's saving grace this year for sure and has restored my faith in the Croatian music scene. Looking forward to hearing more of him in 2017. |

A lot of those margins are wider than I expected, but the points system looks like it's working as intended. 27. Shetland Islands I don't have much to say about SI. I had a notion they were unluckier than Scotland, but they actually had the same number of qualifiers this year. So this is a boring update as I only really have strong feelings about one song. 7 Villain − Lucie Silvas ( GreekFan ) Quote:
What an appropriately named song!
6 The Fog − Rachel Sermanni ( MysteriousOz )5 Touch − KLOE ( Yugimuto1 ) 4 Wolf Eyes − Harlaw ( yoshi64 ) 3 We Are the Kings − Little Eye ( BethnalGreen ) Quote:
All slightly inferior versions of other songs e.g. KLOE is just CHVRCHES rly.
2 The Wild − Kerri Watt ( EuroFoxi )Quote:
Both Kerri Watt songs did much worse than I anticipated!
1 River − Bishop Briggs ( jag02010 )Quote:
I thought this would be another monotonous folky song but the chorus omg ![]()

I thought I would open this now rather than tonight as well FiK55 is on tonight and well it my give some of you a couple of hours to get votes in before then as tonight might be the only night some of you may have if you are going to a place where the WiFi is terrible over the festive period.
I might check for votes tomorrow and Christmas Day (like any of you will be sad enough to vote on Christmas Day ) but I might be: a) Too busy to process them, or: b) Too drunk to process them! ![]() So I might start to process votes on Boxing Day or the 27th December. But I very much guess I will be ![]() "snowed under"![]() during it all!DSFE Champion of Champions 2016: QF2 01. Azores - Fingertips - Out Of Control 02. Ireland - Gavin James - Bitter Pill 03.
