Decent set of results again, very surprised about Liechtenstein though, I thought it was a sure qualifier.

NQ Votes:
5 - Liechtenstein
4 - Algeria
3 - Canada

NQ Votes:

10 - Canada
2 - Moldova

Surprised in a good way at those results, that was a very strong QF. Shame I couldn't find room in my points for Estonia, Portugal and Russia as well.

NQ Points:

05 Algeria (Les Retardataires)
04 Kosovo (Vegim)
03 Lithuania (Can't Wake Up)
11th Liechtenstein (Movies)
14th Portugal (Ailleurs)
15th Estonia (Puuame Droone)
17th Moldova (Castele De Nisip)
20th Canada (Skeletons)
21st Anglesey (Run Free)
22nd Russia (Most Wanted)

Really think Algeria, Kosovo and Lithuania should've qualified and would've given each of them more points had it been a different QF. Overall not bad results though.

Poor Rykka can't catch a break </3 Canada also robbed, but mostly good qualifiers.

23. Lithuania

What a journey <3 and GJan didn't even need to get them here. There were several revelations this year that really boosted Lithuania from "omg pls no" to "i'm okay with that" and long may that continue.

12 Fly − Donny Montell ( Pete Callan )

Disgusting
11 Gal Per Ilgai − MAN-GO ( EuroFoxi )

I appreciate trash couture
10 Aš Viena − Eglė Jakštytė ( thengp12 )

Lithuanian is underrated as a language, even if this is droning.
10 We Go Home − Adam Cohen ( Cuishla )
8 Coco − Camille ( ChickenFromKiev )
7 Lonely Town − Brandon Flowers ( jag02010 )
6 Embers − Rasabasa ( King Kunta )

And then we have a series of very okay songs.
5 Walk With Me − Monika Linkytė ( brb )

This is definitely Feels Like Coming Home by Jetta, but that is fine. There is a huge gap between this and Rasabasa btw, Lithuania managed five songs I really liked this year O:
4 Ant Mašinos Stogo − Vaidas Baumila ( Pete Callan )

The chorus is a cop-out but idc it's very rousing and optimistic, and Vaidas is always so robbed.
3 Can't Wake Up − Evelina Young ( Gwen 404 )

Gwen delivered Lithuania this year.
2 The Edge of the World − Colours of Bubbles ( Lurker62 )
1 Your Ghost − Colours of Bubbles ( Gwen 404 )

Colours of Bubbles though! This is the first country where two songs feature in my top 50, yay!

Colours of Bubbles saved me when I got Lithuania. I think GJan will be back again this year though.
And, I finally have a song in the Top 50 of Alexos. Meow! 🐯

Maybe! I have no recollection Although that QF was not great (except for Italy tehe).

22. Ukraine

Another emerging star even though they actually much worse than last year in actual results lol. The general public are WRONG on this one though, Ukraine harnessed the spirit of Jamala and delivered in 2016!

12 Liar − The Erised ( Yugimuto1 )
11 Look − Onuka ( shar_ds )

Eastern European alternative failures </3
10 Shine − Auraganix ( bee.fear )
9 On My Way − MaRina ( Carlisle156 )

Idk who she's fooling with that capital R, I was waiting too many months for the chorus!!
8 Over My Head − Elen Levon ( AxG )

She's become so disappointing hasn't she?
7 Bse Uspet − Alekseev ( nunaney )

Alekseev is a slight babe! I thought I liked this more than I do but it's fine.
6 Timeless − Kamaliya ( phill363 )

I love phill for sending this and she was robbed like always.
5 Game Over − Aelyn ( thengp12 )

What a sublime and unexpected breakout!
4 Hold Me More Strong − Olga Romanovskaya ( selreyes )

Most tragic disqualification this year??
3 Podruga-Noch − Max Barskih ( Gwen 404 )

I sometimes feel he releases the same song again and again but I am also pregnant with his child so.
2 Ne Ydy − Okean Elzy ( March Mornings )

And just like that we are suddenly plunged into some intense former Soviet darkness but I kind of love it.
1 Kill V. Maim − Grimes ( aliyah101 )

I think you need to have dropped acid to enjoy this to the full extent but who doesn't want to go to a blood rave with Grimes truly?

I definitely did give it 12 in the QF, it was a brilliant find, especially for Lithuania whose music scene isn't great

21. Belgium

Belgium has been through so much, after being barely considered a 'good' country for years, cut in two multiple times and stitched back together, and only experiencing one top 3 placement since 2011. But then everything changed, and the sun shone.

10 The Golden Age − Mustii ( ChickenFromKiev )

'I heard she's back in town with a big black guy'
9 Ushuaia − K3 ( Lisa.B )

I'm bedbound right now, possibly because of this.
8 Fortune Cookie − Emma Bale ft. Milow ( MiesBouwman )

I used to enjoy this more but it gets progressively more tedious every time I come back to it
7 Lost In Love − Noémie Wolfs ( March Mornings )

Hooverphonic and their solar system of rotating lead singers have such a weird history of songs almost being really good.
6 Lucky You − Alice on the Roof ( TerryP )

I'm shocked that Terry was the one to enter this as she seems so over it, vocally speaking. It's okay.
5 Soul − Puggy ( Carlisle156 )

Carlisle stole some of mika's jaunt for this song and that's all very well apart from the objectification of women throughout the video
4 Back Into Life − Maple Black ( Yugimuto1 )

Belgium has a lot of these types of songs that aren't ~quite~ there, but there's technically nothing wrong.
3 Caught by the Tide − Billie ( Yugimuto1 )

And then there's this which has such a great hook! If only it had a stronger chorus...
2 Wild Horses − Birdy ( avb )

At least Belgium got to snatch this one out of England's greedy talons.
1 Million Eyes − Loďc Nottet ( ChickenFromKiev )

This won Hell before the contest even began.

Yay at being first and last. Golden Age was just a despair entry, Belgium isn't as good as it appears.

20. Germany

Past me must have had a reason to put Germany ahead of Ukraine and Belgium, even if that reason eludes me now. The flaws of a qualitative ranking rest heavy on my soul. Objectively this was Germany's worst year ever, with a few gems that boost it around this point.

11 Beat to My Melody − Lena ( phill363 )

Thankfully 2016 was the year everyone finally realised Lena is the worst.
10 Pendel − Yvonne Catterfeld ( Pooley )
9 Revolution − Kompass Nord ( JonahTakalua )

There is nothing memorable about these at all.
8 Dad − Neele Ternes ( Pooley )

A worse Someone Like You
7 You & I − PVRIS ( Gwen 404 )

I just don't like PVRIS that much.
6 Kommst du Mit Ihr − Sarah Connor ( nick1990 )

She's a bit Anouk. Using the live version was bravery.
5 One Woman Army − Grace Capristo ( Carlisle156 )

I yearn for a bigger chorus though she is reliably good.
4 Musik Sein − Wincent Weiss ( Pete Callan )

Reminds me so much of Andreas Bourani, albeit more generic.
3 Hello − Hedley ( Lurker62 )

A running theme with these countries is there is a big gap between the top 3ish and the rest, and this is very true with Germany.
2 Giant − Valentina Mér ( Pooley )

I really thought this could have been great
1 Ich Bin Frei − Frankziska Wiese ( yoshi94 )

It's Venus and Mars by Eliane, but idc.

Yoshi <3 did you not expect that? I think I consistently gave Ich Bin Frei high points.

I consulted my conscience and I have come to the decision to switch Germany and Ukraine, because it's not like anyone's keeping tabs anyway, so welcome to the top 20 Ukraine

19. Aland Islands

Finland and Alands are a bit UTR compared to the rest of Scandinavia because they tend to have stealth threats rather than BIG songs, and too many meandering entries:

9 Younghearted − Hetkeksi ( Lurker62 )
8 One Hundred Years − Samu Haber, Niila ( BethnalGreen )

Like these.
7 Räjäytä Mun Mieli − Anna Abreu ( phill363 )
6 Bandana − Anna Abreu ( Pete Callan )

Stereo is one of the most underrated DSFE songs of all time but nuAnnaAbreu is just not the same
5 Sugar Rush − Venior ( penguinperson )

Well it's not boring, but I am assaulted by the intense melody which fails to reach prime catchiness levels.
4 Kohta Vapaita − Anna Puu ( JordanC55 )

What is it with Finnish singers and being buried? The definition of a grower and I probably undermarked it throughout Schaan sorry.
3 Restless Heart − Niila ( March Mornings )

Started out way lower but I couldn't get the chorus to leave me alone.
2 Supersankari − Laura Närhi ( jackel1234 )

Laura has had such a DSFE journey from the time she represented Alands when they were controversial, and she's still got it.
1 Naa Yot ei Anna Armoo − Kaija Koo ft. Cheek ( thengp12 )

I regret not picking this in Hell, but I am so glad thengp did at least because Kaija Koo is glam af. Cheek doesn't even ruin it despite trying very hard.

Alex, I'm not the kind of player who keeps a watch on who's giving me what points - as long as points do come, that's all I watch for Im just pleasantly surprised that given the awful year I've had at the game, an entry of mine is at the top of any leaderboard

A lot of the placements are arbitrary and could change based on how I feel on any given day, so don't read too much into that.

18. Russia

I have this feeling that Russia aren't great and maybe that is still true, even though they improved in a year when so many countries floundered. Still, it's no surprise that several sneaky ancestral Russian links feature at the top of this list.

12 Hateful Love − Little Big ( Lurker62 )

My chest infection is worse after this.
11 Innocence − Alisa Sharp ( ChickenFromKiev )

Trying so hard to have a ~message~ she forgot to be a charismatic singer.
10 Children of War − Sophie ( jackel1234 )

Slightly Selah Sue. A really weird song though. Does anyone feel passionately about changing the world after that?
9 Eet − Regina Spketor ( March Mornings )

At least choose the Kubo & the Two Strings soundtrack </3
8 Na Glubine Dushi − Vladislav Kurasov ( ChickenFromKiev )

He is far too young to be going through whatever it is that is happening in this video.
7 REALiTi − Grimes ( King Kunta )

Kill V. Maim ownage <3
6 She'll Be Back − MBAND ( EuroFoxi )

I enjoy how appalling they are.
5 What's it Gonna Be? − Shura ( jag02010 )

Adorbs video, I wish this was a hot gay film.
4 I Will Not − Polina Gagarina ( AxG )

Despite being forced to be the VILLAIN in Vienna, I will always appreciate her.
3 Jealousy − Elena Temnikova ( thengp12 )

OTT drama done right, exploring the very prevalent (apparently) problem that everyone in Russia wants to destroy all their possessions.
2 Most Wanted − Julia Parshuta ( robotpuppy )

Belarus being denied her twice is v cruel, but Russia doesn't give af.
1 Stand By You − Rachel Platten ( jag02010 )

Bittersweet given that I can never listen to Fight Song again now due to The Bad Thing, and this isn't quite as good, but I still really enjoy it.

You have a few firsts though too!
Spoiler

17. Gibraltar

This was a breakout year for England 3 in terms of finalists, even if there's nothing incredible here. Well done to England 1 for being the best England

7 On What You're On − Busted ( Pete Callan )

That this qualified and Arthur Beatrice didn't is offensive.
6 Warriors − Coco & The Butterfields ( yoshi94 )

France always does this genre better.
5 Cruel − Foxes ( thengp12 )

Glorious Foxes All I Need Foxes
4 Invincible − Joe Moore ( avb )

Something really annoying about his face. This is the most sing by numbers BIG song ever but I enjoy it.
3 Anymore − Melanie C ( TerryP )

I hope one day all the Spice Girls will have appeared in DSFE. What an inspiration.
2 Carry You Home − Ward Thomas ( jackel1234 )

Also jury bait. I imagine this is what The Common Linnets think they sound like.
1 Human − Rag'n'Bone Man ( BethnalGreen )

I mean I think I've seen this video 38958942 times before but there's something very compelling about him and his beard.
