I'm also there to be added to the list of hmm Turkvision, all the way back in my second contest! Worse is that I came 2nd to last in the QF with the entry I did send.

70th place: Lebanon
I guess this isn't a huge surprise considering I have the only Lebanese finalist this year (not that I'm bragging ). Lebanon are one of those countries that everyone forgets about until they get them and then you get the struggle of trying to find something audible or by Shakira. Maybe by Mika at a push.

Me: NACH - Coeur De Pierre (DSFE 74)
Me: Omar Dean ft Sophia Hope - Runaway Love (DSFE 76)
6th: Ramy Ayach - Khallini maak (DSFE 73)
5th: Shakira - Try Everything (DSFE 77)
4th: twenty one pilots - House of Gold (DSFE 81)

3rd: Myriam Fares - Nifsi Aoulhalak (DSFE 79)
Just one of the best of a bad bunch really. Catchy enough to push it up.

2nd: Anthony Touma - La colere du monde (DSFE 78)
More songs in French, yaaaay. Another one that was just better than the others, I think this'd be a semi finalist if it was sent for French though personally but that's just me.

1st: Mika ft Ariana Grande - Popular Song (DSFE 75)
Probably no surprise here, the song that was closest to being a finalist from the list but got disqualified. Also the most unrealistic but when the song is this good why not?

Average Score: 5.83

69th place: Montenegro
Is there something poetic about Montenegro being 69th? Probably. People were saying that Montenegro were doing better this year and I do agree, but as per Montenegrin usual, there are a couple of songs that bring it down. I think this is one of their best DSFE years though, although I feel sorry for Lurker getting them three times. </3

Me: Milena Vucic - Gorim (DSFE 75)
Me: Andrea Demirovic - Posveta (DSFE 84)
8th: ABHOTH - Blood of The Ancients (DSFE 80)
7th: Goga Sekulic - Na Tebe Da Ne Lici (DSFE 78)
6th: Nina Zizic - Kiss You Goodbye (DSFE 83)
5th: Seka Aleksic - Lek Za Spavanje (DSFE 82)
4th: Vlado Georgiev - Iskreno (DSFE 74)

3rd: Aleksandra Vojvodic Jovovic - Iskra Vjecnog Plamena (DSFE 81)
This was my guilty pleasure from DSFE 81. Obviously not the greatest song to ever be sent to DSFE but I love me some dated, upbeat opera, particularly when it's from Montenegro and you've spent a few days trying to find something that hasn't been sent and isn't Serbian.

2nd: Lana Jurcevic - Tabu (DSFE 79)
The first Montenegrin finalist in a year and a half. A deserved finalist I feel, it's always nice to see a nice Balkan ballad-ish song do well.

1st: Ana Milenkovic - Budalo (DSFE 76)
Robbed. One of my favourite Balkan entries in DSFE, I thought this was a great find and definitely deserved to make it to the final. I actually prefer it to my two Montenegrin entries.

Average Score: 5.88

There's a big shock in the next two...

Yeah sorry for Ramy Ayach. It was my first contest and had no idea how this lot works. Thank you to that one voter that gave it three points otherwise I would have had two null points not just the one.

Try Everything is underrated

The story so far in my ranking: (I've sorted the countries by colour, with dark red being the worst, and purple being the best.

Spoiler

66. Azerbaijan

The ultimate ESC villain is less polished in its DSFE form. I had the pleasure of having Azerbaijan for the first time this year, by consent too. It did not end well.

11 The One − Eldar Gasimov ( Pooley )

This song and video gave me epilepsy, diabetes, and a number of other maladies.
10 Lazım − Şəbnəm Tovuzlu ( nick1990 )
9 Coffee From Colombia − Aygun Kazimova ft. Snoop Dogg ( ChrisROE Hughes )

Azerbaijan WISH they could get Snoop Dogg into Eurovision, or at least clone him.
8 It's My War − Safura Alizadeh ( Pooley )
7 Bedroom − Ellyland ( Lisa.B )
6 Boomerang − Emin ( avb )

Also featuring some artists that aren't Laleh. I'm so glad that Pooley sent that Safura song though so that I do not have the lowest amount of points for Azerbaijan this year <3
5 Bara Få va Mig Själv − Laleh ( jag02010 )
4 Aldrig Bli Som Förr − Laleh ( Pooley )
3 Boom − Laleh ( AxG )
2 Welcome to the Show − Adam Lambert ft. Laleh ( Carlisle156 )

The trouble is though that none of these are that great, except maybe this version of Welcome to the Show. What happened to Laleh after Colors? It appears being sent for Azerbaijan four times has taken its toll on her career.
1 Pusula − Latifa Soyouz ( ChickenFromKiev )

Latifa is the way forward, as long as she releases more than one viable song a year.

Yay I got a first. <3 Pusula is one of my favourite entries this year and I'm glad people can appreciate her completely batshit music. She does have a few new songs this year but none of them are much good unfortunately.

Here comes a shock...

68th place: England
Yep! It wasn't an outstanding year for England, but they're even ranked below the likes of Bosnia and Georgia. They suffered from having too many entries that just weren't for me, which is understandable because I think you should take risks when you have England. Just means they don't do so well.

Me: Paige Monroe - Call It Love (DSFE 79)
11th: Dry the River - Weights & Measures (DSFE 82)
10th: Radiohead - Burn the Witch (DSFE 78)
9th: Tom Odell - Magnetised (DSFE 77)
8th: Findlay - Wolfback (DSFE 76)
7th: Fickle Friends - Say No More (DSFE 75)
6th: Oh Wonder - Without You (DSFE 80)
5th: Harper - Animal (DSFE 81)
4th: Rae Morris - Love Again (DSFE 73)

3rd: Birdy - Keeping Your Head Up (DSFE 74)
This is my favourite Birdy song, and while this was a rather predictable entry I can understand why someone would send it. Surprised it didn't do better considering it got 1st in both the QF and the SF.

2nd: Arthur Beatrice - Real Life (DSFE 83)
Now this was definitely robbed, and I'm appreciating it even more now after the contest. </3 I thought this was a certain finalist so for it to be quite a way off is shocking and disappointing.

1st: Vaults - Midnight River (DSFE 84)
I'm not at all surprised that this is England's highest placement this year. I didn't actually give this any points in the final but with such a strong final that couldn't be helped. But yes, definitely the best English song this year imo.

Average Score: 6.00

67th place: Kosovo
Beating England by a 9 is the occasional country that borrows from Albania of all places and has never actually broken the top 5. Take that, England.

7th: Eleni Foureira - Party Sleep Repeat (DSFE 83)
6th: Elvana Gjata - Kush Jam Une (DSFE 78)
5th: Mark Marku - Da si Htjela (DSFE 82)
4th: Shkurte Gashi - Nuk te Fal (DSFE 75)

3rd: Bebe Rexha ft Nicki Minaj - No Broken Hearts (DSFE 79)
I didn't realise how much I needed Nicki Minaj representing Kosovo. This has always quietly been a song that I loved and I'm actually quite sad it didn't make the final.

2nd: Janex - Shadows & Lights (DSFE 73)
I thought this was really good for Kosovo, and quite unfair that it has that last place in the SF just because the actual last place got disqualified. </3 Not surprised it didn't make it but it would've been in my finalists for DSFE 73.

1st: Arilena - Vegim (DSFE 76)
And here's Yugi's other Kosovar entry this year! The fact that I gave this over half of its points in the final speaks volumes to how underrated I think this was, but never mind. The only Kosovar finalist is my first, how predictable.

Average Score: 6.00

Well, at least I feature twice in your top 4 I also have a complicated relationship with No Broken Hearts which I will get to eventually.

65. Montenegro

Montenegro took an extended break at the end of last year/beginning of this year. Did they learn and grow from that contemplative time? The answer is no, no, they did not. As it happens, only 6 players are responsible for what happened here. Let's find out how they sinned.

10 Blood of the Ancients − ABHOTH ( Lurker62 )

9 Iskreno − Vlado Georgiev ( Lurker62 )
8 Kiss You Goodbye − Nina Zizic ( Pooley )

The Baku Music Factory is taking over the world.
7 Lek Za Spavanje − Seka Aleksic ( Pete Callan )
6 Na Tebe Da Ne Liči − Goga Sekulić ( Lisa.B )
5 Iskra Vjecnog Plamena − Aleksandra Vojvodic Jovovic ( Lurker62 )

Aleksandra's tour of Montenegro is quite lovely at least.
4 Gorim − Milena Vucic ( ChickenFromKiev )
3 Budalo − Ana Milenkovic ( Pooley )
2 Tabu − Lana Jurčević ( BethnalGreen )

Lana cheekily showing up and saving the day slightly. Ana Milenkovic and I have different definitions of what our perfect Ken doll should look like.
1 Posveta − Andrea Demirović ( ChickenFromKiev )

This is basically the only reason Montenegro ranks higher than Azerbaijan and Portugal, and maybe recent bias is affecting that, but Andrea once again is almost single-handedly carrying Montenegro on her back. Stay strong gurl <3

Yay another 1st <3 I like how we (kinda) have the same top 3 for Montenegro, excluding my own entries.

'Fan-Girl' was iconic. <3

My other bit of trash, Ellyland is having a crack at Unser Song this year.

66th place: Estonia
Not a bad year for Estonia in terms of results, getting four finals and two top tens to their name, but unfortunately there were some less than satisfactory results for them too and songs that, similarly to England, weren't really my thing.

12th: Cartoon & Daniel Levi - On & On (DSFE 74)
11th: Kerli - Diamond Hard (DSFE 84)
10th: Liis Lemsalu - Sinu Ees (DSFE 83)
9th: Ewert and The Two Dragons - Circles (DSFE 76)
8th: Maarja - Tulilinnud (DSFE 80)
7th: Beyond Beyond - So Alive (DSFE 79)
6th: The Brackets - Finally Be Free (DSFE 78)
5th: Janne - Meeting the Wolf (DSFE 82)
4th: Kerli - Feral Hearts (DSFE 75)

3rd: Lenna - Suvehommik Setumaal (DSFE 77)
I'm a sucker for a sweet folksy Baltic song, so naturally I was going to love this. I'm not necessarily surprised it didn't make the final, but it's sad that it did rather underwhelmingly.

2nd: Grete Paia - Puuame Droone (DSFE 73)
Estonia's best finisher here, I do really like this song and I think I gave it a couple of points in the final. About as good as you're going to get for Estonia without Kerli or diaspora.

1st: Wurffel - Burdened Sky (DSFE 81)
...Except this. I really love this, it's one of my favourite Estonian entries of all time I think. I do think it deserved better in the final of DSFE 81 but 14th isn't too bad.

Average Score: 6.08

65th place: Bosnia
Down there with the likes of Montenegro, Bosnia haven't actually had a horrendous year, with (for the most part) credible entries all year round. Add that to the first Bosnian finalist appearance for a non-English song since DSFE 35 and I'm sure Bosnia will be thankful for the little they got this year.

Me: Zuzi Zu - Vatra (DSFE 79)
11th: Goran Bregovic - Bella Ciao (DSFE 76)
10th: Sanjin & Youthman - Zlatan Ibrahimovic (DSFE 80)
9th: Ferry Corsten ft Haris - Back to Paradise (DSFE 75)
8th: Tropico Band ft Mirza Soljanin - Sarajevo - Beograd (DSFE 73)
7th: Amel Curic - Te Zime (DSFE 84)
6th: Axel Wolph ft Madita - Lights (DSFE 77)
5th: Anabela - Nocna patrola (DSFE 81)
4th: Lana Jurcevic - Neke Se Noci Ne Spavaju (DSFE 83)

3rd: Dubioza Kolektiv - Free.mp3 (The Pirate Bay Song) (DSFE 74)
Not even sorry for ranking this 3rd. A wonderful masterpiece as well as a wonderful mess. I think that Lurker with awful countries is an inspiration to us all.

2nd: Seka Aleksic - Crnooka (DSFE 78)
The only Bosnian finalist this year, perhaps not to anyone's surprise. Despite being entered about six months ago this is continuously stuck in my head which I think is a good thing.

1st: Adna - Dreamer (DSFE 82)
Yugi tops my list again! I'm gonna be risky here and say that this is the best Bosnian entry in DSFE (especially one that's actually Bosnian) and while she has better songs, this is still by far the best Bosnian entry this year, and deserved to make the final.

Average Score: 6.09

64. Turkey

This was the first year Turkey didn't come last in any contest :') But that is the one piece of good news. They have the worst population to high placing in DSFE ratio, because the majority of players' sensitive Western ears can't really cope with the often-guttural Turkish language, which is 90% of the songs popular in Turkey at any given time.

12 Abrakadabra − Atiye ( Pooley )

Remember when Atiye came 3rd? How the mighty have fallen.
11 Miş Miş − Simge ( EuroFoxi )
10 Reva − Gökçe ( King Kunta )
9 Aşk Mı Dedin − Ömür Gedik ( yoshi94 )
8 Okyanus − Derya Uluğ ( Steven_P )
7 Gitme − Karnaval ft. Iskender Paydas ( mikabv )
6 Hadi İnşallah − Nil Karaibrahimgil ( mikabv )

O lord @ all of these.
5 Als ich Fortging − Elif ( Cuishla )

I can kind of see why this was Turkey's best 2016 result, but it's half way through and I am checking FB.
4 Land of Gold − Anoushka Shankar ft. Alev Lenz ( Lurker62 )

I'm always wanting this to be Safe and Sound by The Civil Wars and then I'm always disappointed.
3 Battlefield − Lea Michele ( Pooley )

It never even began for Lea Michele. She was done the moment her best song failed to make the Final back in London.
2 Olmamis Mi? − Edis ( MiesBouwman )
1 Meteorite − Years & Years ( avb )

Years & Years no longer being guaranteed finalists is almost Turkey's biggest shock this year, narrowly losing out to the military coup. Olly Alexander is a top tier human being and requires greater allegiance than he was afforded here, especially with the backless sequined number he blessed us with.

Carlisle entered Beautiful Lies for Romania before and Kaliningrad this year.
I expect this to be in avb's next list of 'Most Shocking DSFE Moments'.

LOL what a thing to come back to. Shhh; the song is SO good and y'all hated on it not once but TWICE.

I feel like DSFE wouldn't be as interesting without a little rule break every now and then Although at least I wasn't the one who sent an English/Swedish band song for Scotland.

To be fair, at least I was unaware of my rule break. I was just a bit careless with my placement of songs in my shortlist evidently. And the song was great.

Not the first time I've sent a song for the wrong country (or the second actually).

In other news, unimpressed by this DSFE veteran now forcing us to sit through more of her music at Eurovision next year...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDHEX9JfNV4
LOL I just saw this ... how AWFUL.

Also even sadder news ... 2nd placers in Gyumri (robbed goddesses) Timoteij with Het are breaking up after their Christmas tour.

Tut tut. In my memory I think that I have only done it once with Beautiful Lies scandal ... what an appropriately named song.

I have got into the habit of tweeting to singers on Youtube who sound like they have European names and then getting them to confirm/deny their ethnicity. Shoutout to the beautiful Svrcina for replying almost straight away and confirming her parents being Czech. <3

Several players were very concerned about this at the time

63. Serbia

During the phase of shit tier countries being handed out as third countries, I felt in my heart that Serbia was slightly better. On reflection, that was an incorrect assumption. Don't get it twisted, Serbia did have some surprisingly enjoyable songs this year! And they are trying their best. But the negative outweigh the positives, and I can't justify them placing any higher.

10 Duj Sandale − Electric Balkan Jazz Club ( shar_ds )
9 Moj Grad − Mortal Kombat ( Lurker62 )

Trash.
8 Menjam Dane − The Fraljee ( Steven_P )

I prefer my Balkan quirk videos to be completely ironic, unlike these tryhards.
7 Heavier The Sun − Irish Stew of Sindidun ( March Mornings )

I think Irish Stew are slowly losing their song-writing ability due to alcohol poisoning.
6 Ne Daj Da Te Kunem − Nikola Petkovic ( ChickenFromKiev )

Did this really deserve last with only 16 points when that Mortal Kombat song didn't? There is much cruelty in the universe.
5 Sve je Laz − Goga Stanic ( yoshi94 )

If only she could be arsed to make a fun and ridiculous video.
4 Kolaps − Marina Viskovic ( Lisa.B )

Such as this!
3 Colours of My Love − NINA ( mikabv )
2 Ljubav Za Sva Vremena − Marina Viskovic ( GreekFan )
1 Najbolja − Jovana Nikolic ( mikabv )

For once I am in sync with the DSFE zeitgeist, as these three are the only finalists. mika and Marina Viskovic are the patron saints of Serbia.

Ne Daj Da Te Kunem not last <3 That was just an impulse send honestly, I had loads of better songs (including Najbolja, no idea why I didn't send that ) but for some reason I sent that obvious QF fodder.

Actually, thinking about this, how do you go about asking these artists about their ethnicity? It just feels a bit weird to me, asking some random, rather unknown singer about their ethnicity, but I'm assuming there's a way to go about it that doesn't sound creepy. I've considered asking a few artists about their ethnicity but I've not really known how to write it because it's always been like "Hello random person I don't know, do you have Bosnian parents?".

(I do think Wasn't My Fault is quite appropriately named too )

64th place: Cyprus
Considering that Cyprus only made it out of the quarter finals twice this year (and came last in the quarter finals a grand total of four times, including the elusive 0pts that Alex has already written about), it may be a surprise that they're ranked above England. Hopefully 2017 can be better for Cyprus, because it can't be much worse than 2016...

Me: Valence - Mirror (DSFE 82)
11th: Angelika Dusk ft Playmen - Beautiful Love (DSFE 76)
10th: Nicolas Metaxas - Seline (DSFE 75)
9th: Ivi Adamou - Tipota De Mas Stamata (DSFE 74)
8th: Eleftheria Eleftheriou - Ston Kosmo Ton Diko Tis (DSFE 78)
7th: Dappy - 100 (Built For This) (DSFE 77)
6th: Giorgos Papadopoulos - Oloi Mou Lene (DSFE 84)
5th: Ivi Adamou - Akou Sopa (DSFE 81)
4th: Nikki Lee - Boy (DSFE 79)

3rd: Eleftheria Eleftheriou - Nuxtes Kaftes (DSFE 73)
You can always rely on the typist irritant to produce something mildly listenable and slightly catchy. This grew on me after the contest.

2nd: Naughty Claudia - Come Out & Play (DSFE 83)
I thought this was really good for Cyprus, and that it certainly deserved to make the semi finals at least. Usually at this point I'd say something generic like "one of the best Cypriot entries this year" but within the context of this countdown that's sort of a given...

1st: Sertari - Keep On Dreaming (DSFE 80)
Yep, I went obvious. The closest entry to reaching the final, even finishing 4th in the QF, I'm disappointed that this didn't make it, it was nice and upbeat, suited to the summer contest it was. An average year for Cyprus all around though.

Average Score: 6.09

63rd place: Andorra
Obviously I have a soft spot for Andorra since they're the first country I won with, but 2016 wasn't a hugely successful year for them, win excluded. Lots of "meh" entries that disappointed following the positive end to 2015.

Me: Fuel Fandango - Salvaje (DSFE 80)
11th: Alvaro Soler - Agosto (DSFE 82)
10th: Efecto Pasillo - No Importa Que Llueva (DSFE 75)
9th: Sirena - Love Is Not (DSFE 79)
8th: Salvador Beltran - No Intentes Amarrarme (DSFE 74)
7th: Electric Nana - Won't Stop (DSFE 76)
6th: BAREI - Throw The Dice (DSFE 78)
5th: Edurne - Painkiller (DSFE 83)
4th: Ana Mena - Loco Como Yo (DSFE 81)

3rd: Auryn ft Anastacia - Who's Loving You? (DSFE 77)
Maybe I'm a little biased towards Anastacia following her stint on Strictly but this didn't deserve to miss out on the semi finals, generic boyband-ness aside. I remember being surprised when it ended up as low as it did.

2nd: Ruth Lorenzo - Echo (DSFE 73)
This went on a wild ride in DSFE 73. 7th in QF, 2nd in SF, 8th in final. This was definitely one of the stronger Andorran entries, I believe it picked up a few points from me in the final too. Just some catchy, uplifting stuff that deserved to do well.

1st: Diabulus In Musica - Inner Force (DSFE 84)
I've recently become obsessed with screamy opera metal so there's no surprise that I was all over this - not the strongest example of said genre I've ever heard but solid for Andorra and deserved to be a finalist imo.

Average Score: 6.18

Haha! If we ever put a list together of '20 ways you know you're a DSFE addict' (and we really should), this is going straight in there!
Hahaha oh god the addiction is real ... As our resident list maker I wouldn't be adverse to you making that list.

Several players were very concerned about this at the time
LOL I'm not shocked. An American-Czech singer who is AMAZING was almost a bit too good to be true.

Hahaha well I did it with both Brandon Skeie and Svrcina this year. So I follow Brandon on youtube/twitter so have known about him for a while now. When he released that song, I looked up where 'Skeie' is from as he actually has done covers with Miia who was entered a bit later with her song Dynasty. Turns out it's a Norwegian surname. So I just asked him if he was from Norway aha and turns out he was!

As for Svrcina ... heard 'Meet Me On The Battlefield' at the end of an episode of Containment (which was a really fab TV show that made me cry more than once) so I shazamed the song. When I found out her name was Svrcina it seemed obvious that it was a Central Europe name so I just googled it and it was a Czech name.

Then I just straight up asked her if she was from Czech - which she replied with her parents both migrated from Czechia. There were only 3 outcomes so I didn't feel like it was a big deal. One she would ignore it, one she would reply and i'd be happy, one she would reply and i'd be sad because there wasn't a connection.

Or she'd think I was a creep and just block me. But luckily that didn't happen either!!

Oh right! It really is that easy. I obviously just build things up too much in my head then, sounds so simple when you put it like that.

(I watched Containment too and 100% agree, really enjoyed it in the I-cried-for-a-few-days way)
