So, last night was the first time, I think, that I saw someone actually at work outside the square.

So, out of curiosity, having only watched EE since 2001, and I don’t watch any of the other soaps:

a) Has this happened before in EE – if so – who / what job etc. – and did we follow X to work more than just once for a couple of minutes.

b) Other soaps – are they like EE when it comes to work – all work within spitting distance of their home in whatever soap ? – or do we regularly see them commuting to work elsewhere, and in the workplace from time to time

Off the top of my head, I don't remember it happening in EE before. Will have to have a think! Stacey's boyfriend when she last returned worked in the city but wasn't really a AS local or a regular character.

It's happened more often in Corrie but still fairly rarely. Less these days. Deirdre used to work at the Council, presumably elsewhere in Weatherfield. Ken, Brian and Dennis worked at local schools. Brian commuted to Rochdale for a while. Ken, Curly, Fred and others worked at Betterbuys and Freshcos (did Freshcos take over Betterbuys?) Ken also worked at a couple of newspapers off the street. Derek was a travelling salesman. Curly and Chalky were bin men.

On Hollyoaks they specifically have the school and hospital where some of the residents work, but I guess that these are meant to be on their doorstep. The sets are a permanent fixture on the show. I can't ever remember EE or HO showing a character in an office job before this current storyline with Lee.

Which reminds me that Sonia worked off the Square, at a hospital (or should that be the hospital? )

I remember Bradley worked in canary wharf at one point but think he was only ever seen coming and going rather than actually being there. Same with MyAlice and her recruitment job.

yes, that's right - but don't think it was a) same place where Phil is now and b) don't think we ever saw her there.

We saw Dot working at an old people's home when she was living with Dotty and her mum. Arthur use to garden for Mrs Hewitt many years back. We also saw Libby in her office at Oxford University.

I think we might have seen her there on occasions when other characters bumped into her there. Perhaps other people can recall?

(Martin and Marcus in Corrie both worked a hospital and we did see them at work quite regularly.)

and right now - who actually works outside the square and commutes to work every day ?

Lee - at least for a while yet

Johnny - commutes I guess - to uni

haven't a clue what Ronnie does for living, or Jack for that matter

so folks, that call center was a one off I guess - unless we get one or two new families who commute for work elsewhere

I think it may have been a different hospital, I mean, I don't recall nurses/doctors etc. saying "Hi Sonia" when they bumped into her when she went there with Carol or on her own - in fact - don't even recall her telling other nurses she was a nurse too. Perhaps I'm wrong

and we did see Kath tracking Tracey down to some high street hair dresser - remember her driving past in a bus - but that was while Stacey was not really in the series.

Yes, Johnny commutes to what I assume is meant to be UCL though I don't think it's ever been named specifically; he's been seen walking to the tube station a few times. I would love it if they actually filmed him there one day. It was a nice treat when we got to see Libby in her office at Oxford and Denise wondering round campus. I love universities.

Jack owns flats, doesn't he? I know he's got some in the square but I think he's also got some in other parts of London so I assume he travels a bit for that. Ronnie possibly still owns the boxing gym but she never talks about it.

The call centre seems to have been specifically used for Lee's storyline. I'm not sure if it's a set or on-location filming but it looks pretty realistic to me.

I think Jack is supposedly property developing. I think he said he's waiting for the sales of the flats on the Square to be completed* before reinvesting in doing up another property.

*new residents coming, with any luck?!

I remember scenes of Michelle and her tutor on campus many years ago. They fell in love and were going to marry. As you say there's something magical about seeing into a different world.

I definitely recall seeing Sonia at hospital a few times. Wasn't she on duty when Stan Carter was in hospital for a while during his final days (and Manuel from Fawlty Towers was in the bed opposite)? I remember her attending to him.

honestly can't remember, but what I do remember, seeing Sonia at the hospital, no signs of recognition / greeting from the other staff (colleagues) ?

One of your earlier posts said you don't think we ever saw her there but this post says we did?

However you could be right about the other staff not acknowledging her when we saw her there even when off duty when accompanying Carol on her appointments (unless you meant we didn't see her there when working). But this could be because the part of the hospital where Carol had her visits was the part that Sonia didn't work in.

When Sonia did that Half-Marathon/Fun Run thing a few months back she did it with some of her colleagues including a paramedic who we've seen a couple of times. This was one of the rare occasions we saw her socialising with her colleagues

yes, what I meant was when she went there with Carol, and later on her own, it was like she was in a strange place - no acknowledgements or nothing - ok, she could work elsewhere in a dirty great big hospital of course

When Ava Hartman was on EE we saw her working at a primary school and Whitney helping out there as an assistant. Whitney even got accused of hitting Denny and Sharon having a go at her about it in front of everyone until it was revealed Denny had lied. But Sharon never apologised to Whitney though.

If/when when we get new residents, would you like a couple who are absent during working hours all week, i.e. commuting to work elsewhere - so we only see them evenings, weekends and the perhaps the odd couple of minutes from work ? or should they do like the rest of them, get a job at the garage, vic, community centre, minute mart, Ians etc , or surprise surprise, a market stall

just thinking, they have a local police station, so a new resident could be a copper i guess, one of Jack's old colleagues ?

With the internet they could compromise. My daughter works in the city but can often work from home and use Skype for meetings and conferences.

And how about an author or illustrator that only needs to go up to town once a week or so.
