Panic attacks - anxiety

Had two Sat night when I was ditched by a so called mate up in a strange part of London. Ive had one before a few months ago, this time I knew how to handle it and had to let both pass. I have talked about it with friends online and there is a big community of people in groups who help each other which is very helpful and comforting. Do many of you suffer from these at all?

I suffered from extreme panic attacks whilst in hospital due to a side-effect of the medicine I was on (high doses of hydrocortisone). Every muscle in my body would tense up, particularly in my face (I looked like a victim of Joker gas) and I would struggle to breath and hyperventilate. The more I could feel it coming the more panicky I got. It was not nice.

Thats awful sounds bad do you still get them now? mine are usually when Im stressed or in a situation that I'm not in control of. I seem to just go off into a daze, feels like walls closing in and I cant get my breath.

Nowhere near as bad. I just get mild anxiety at things like the doorbell going off unexpectedly, police vans in the street, or groups of teenagers messing about outside. It's not crippling though.

You need to know that this is very common. Don't listen to the idiot here who talks about a mental disorder - it isn't. It's a natural reaction to a stressful situation. Unfortunately the reaction is worse than the situation itself. You probably are right in that it's when you feel you have no control over things. Talk to your GP. He/she will be familiar with it, and can point you in the right direction.

Could you elaborate? Do you mean you were driven up there, got out of the car, and then at some point, the friend you were with suddenly walked off and left you? Some context would be useful.

I suffer with anxiety but I don't know if I've ever had a panic attack, I probably have but what's the difference?

A couple of days ago, I had a panic attack, which made me feel I couldn't breathe and thought I was going to have a heart attack. I just didn't know what to do to calm myself down, but eventually, I told myself "it's just adrenalin, I'll be ok" and it eventually subsided.

Then today, I went out to take the dogs for a walk and started to feel I couldn't breathe properly again, so I went back home quickly. I soon recovered once I got home, which makes me think it was probably just another panic attack. Bloody annoying, though. Got to find a way to deal with it, but I don't want to go to the doctor, as seeing her is enough to bring on another panic attack.

What are they experiencing others do not?, I have had a 63 years of life some parts I did not like some situations were weird but I'm still here
That's just how life is sometimes great /sometimes not so

You're right, if you haven't experienced a panic attack, you have no way of understanding how it feels. I can assure you, it is awful.

Crippling fear where you truly believe you are going to die / pass out / run screaming.... Horrible experience.

I get them and if I'm at home a hot bath or splashing cold water on my face helps as it gives a sensation that takes your mind of the panic and helps with breathing. My GP said rubbing your face or concentrating on a visualisation like the sea, a tree whatever helps. I do take Sertraline and the dose was upped to help deal with panic. I also panic about the panic when I have an attack and think I'm going to be sick or make a fool of myself plus I hyperventilate / can't breathe properly. A psychologist gave me stretching and breathing exercises to do every day and to use them for panic. I'm thinking of taking up yoga as I think it will help.

I've had them. More so when I was younger but have felt it coming on a couple of times more recently. All you can do is work through it and try to distract yourself, do something else, fiddle with your phone. Try to think of something else and it will pass. Don't give in to it or you will not be able to have a proper life. Over thinking and anticipating panic attacks will just bring them on. You can actually talk yourself into it. The solution is to quickly talk yourself back out.
