I really loved Emma Stone's performance in La La Land, really power and compelling. Gosling is very good too, but it is Stone's film.
Are you connected to the film industry or are you not UK based? Saw the poster for La La Land at my local cinema-looks magical! |

May I ask please how you've managed to see this film as it hasn't hit UK cinemas yet ?

That and "A Monster Calls" are the only two films this year to leave me in floods of tears

The Oscars are poor this year. There has been hardly any great movies nothing that the public like . And its corrupt any way .
Hacksaw ridge is the only worthwhile one if nominated |

Did you see Lion?
Is it another "bring tissues" movie ? |

No, haven't see Lion yet, It's impressive how well Dev Patel has got on when I thought his Hollywood Career was gone after "Last Airbender",

Hacksaw ridge is the only worthwhile one if nominated The oscars being 'corrupt' is nothing new either, although I think flawed is a more accurate choice of word. Personally, I much prefer the contenders this year to last, and even though there is the possibility that La La Land may do something of a sweep, overall the quality of films this year is much better than last for me. |

Hacksaw ridge is the only worthwhile one if nominated Alongside Moonlight and Hell or High Water those are likely to be the 8 movies for the best picture line-up (with the likes of Jackie, Loving, Lion and Silence just bubbling below that; think Silence is least likely as it does not contend in any of the other above the line category, Garfield is mainly listed for Hacksaw). |

I thought last year's performances were some of the weakest I have seen in years. I hope there is an improvement this year. I do normally find I prefer the performances that are not acknowledged. But then that is the fun of a discussion when on a thread like this. To see what entertains us and what does not.

La La Land, Fences, Hidden Figures, Arrrival and Manchester by the Sea are really doing well at the US box office at the moment.

Arrival is ok so I hear as not seen yet . Moonlight Manchester la la land seem the big 3 critic wise but the public probably don't know them . Nothing big this year though |

I don't think Garfiield will win. He is a contender to be nominated but no where near a contender to win.
Casey Affleck has been the hot contender to win for ages. This year, all four actor nominations look clear Emma for Best actress Viola for supporting actress Casey for best actor Mahershala for supporting actor They have been the favorites for months and I haven't seen any changes to indicate any different. It feels less competitive this year compared to previous years. |

I think Affleck is in the driving seat for best actor. I thought Washington might give him a run for his money, but at the moment it doesn't feel like it's going to happen.
i'd be happy for Affleck to win, it's the kind of performance I love, in the sense it is a very raw and natural kind of performance. One scene in particular lingers long in the mind. I don't think best actor/actress are locked quite yet though. |
