Michelle Williams is only in Manchester by the Sea for about 15 minutes max, she was always being touted for the supporting actress category. Really it's only one scene that she is in that stands out, but sometimes that can be enough if it's very powerful as this one is.

Hacksaw Ridge won't get nominated. Everyone loves a comeback but Gibson is Gibson and I don't see him having enough Oscar voter support.
I also do not see A United Kingdom getting in - maybe for BAFTA but it's made no impact in the US to speak of. I think my predict best picture shortlist early on would be: La La Land Manchester By The Sea Arrival (even though I didn't really care for it) Moonlight Fences Then the possibles of: Nocturnal Animals (though it may have to settle for screenplay nom) Passengers (unknown element at this point, could be the mainstream pick) Sully (respect actor/director combo) Lion (due to narrative of film and Weinstein) A Monster Calls (though may just get technical nods) Jackie (decent buzz) |

Good points about Hacksaw.
If not that then maybe Silence could creep in with Scorsese with the director nom. Although at this point, Silence doesn't even have a poster or trailer and it's supposed to be released in about 5 weeks! |

I already said in my OP about Michelle being in supporting anyway. She is the tipped as the dark horse to potentially steal it away from Viola.
Interesting that both Viola and Michelle could go head to head, as i felt that either Michelle or Viola really should of won the year when Meryl won for The Iron Lady. However Michelle Williams and Viola Davis have both been in my list of actresses due for an oscar and one of them might finally be ticked off my list. I remember Emily Blunt being an early contender for The Girl On The Train a few months ago but the buzz seems to of died. |

Goes to show having good source material alone isn't enough to make a good film, as the book is terrific. |

People suspected the Wolf of Wall Street wouldn't make it's release date but it did.
Of course no one knows how Oscar friendly Silence is, it feels a bit more like Kundun or The Age of Innocence than Scorsese's more commercial work, but really who knows? |

yeah, he has alienated a lot of people. I am interested to see it though, as it sounds good.

Sully maybe slightly under rated, as Warner Bros usually get something nominated for BP no matter what- Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, anyone- and Sully would presumably be the one this year. (Assuming Sully is more Oscar friendly than Live by Night.) |

Best Picture/Director? I agree. Thinks like special effects, costume, set design etc, i can't see why not.
Of course we're all really just guessing here at the moment, many online thought Angelina Jolie's film Unbroken was a lock for major noms... until people saw it. |

I meant for picture/director. I suppose it's possible Andrew Garfield gets nominated if he's good enough, but in terms of the other two, it isn't really that long since the cast of Hangover III refused point blank to allow Gibson to be in the movie such was his reputation, amongst other things. He's not comeback that far.

I was referring to post 24, which talked about her being 'pushed' in to the supporting actress category. if i realised it was going to go on to the next page i would have quoted. My personal view is that Michelle's role in Manchester is too brief to win but we will see

i really need viola davis to win this year, she was robbed for doubt and the help and i think she is one of, if not the, most talented actresses alive today. i am also so excited to see jackie after all the reviews of natalie portman's performance. fully expecting la la land to win best picture so i'm looking forward to that also. really hoping 13th and zootopia win best documentary and best animated feature respectively also.

eta: link to clip for anyone interested: https://twitter.com/AVAETC/status/797974566597324800 It is a powerful documentary that pulls no punches and deals with the topic in a pretty even handed way overall and is equally as scathing about Democratic policy on the issue as Republican. |

A United Kingdom isn't being released in the USA this year per imdb, and it's not on the current Awards Circuit list of films that have any chance of best picture at all, which does include Rogue One and Zootropolis, amongst other unlikely candidates.

Surprised they're not releasing United Kingdom in the US. Not even a brief limited release before going wide in Feb.
It's a bit Oscar-baity and Amma Asante/David Oyelewo would probably have been a shoe-in after the "so white" stuff last year. |

Fox Searchlight will be distributing the film in the US & they'll be campaigning for "Jackie" in the next couple of months so I guess they figure that's where there money should be devoted |

Maybe they figure the cost of running an Oscar Campaign just isn't worth it for the amount they'll get back if the film is only nominated

Not sure if it was ever really in the picture for awards. Was looking forward to that as well. |

so the shortlist for the independent spirit awards is out, obviously not that indicative as the parameters are somewhat narrow in terms of eligibility but Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea and American Honey off to a strong start:
http://variety.com/2016/film/news/20...ns-1201924188/ Best Feature “American Honey” “Chronic” “Jackie” “Manchester by the Sea” “Moonlight” Best Director Andrea Arnold (“American Honey”) Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”) Pablo Larrain (“Jackie”) Jeff Nichols (“Loving”) Kelly Reichardt (“Certain Women”) Best Male Lead Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”) David Harewood (“Free in Deed”) Viggo Mortensen (“Captain Fantastic”) Jesse Plemons (“Other People”) Tim Roth (“Chronic”) Best Female Lead Annette Bening (“20th Century Women”) Isabelle Huppert (“Elle”) Sasha Lane (“American Honey”) Ruth Negga (“Loving”) Natalie Portman (“Jackie”) Best Supporting Male Ralph Fiennes (“A Bigger Splash”) Ben Foster (“Hell or High Water”) Lucas Hedges (“Manchester by the Sea”) Shia LaBeouf (“American Honey”) Craig Robinson (“Morris from America”) Best Supporting Female Edwina Findley (“Free in Deed”) Paulina Garcia (“Little Men”) Lily Gladstone (“Certain Women”) Riley Keough (“American Honey”) Molly Shannon (“Other People”) |

Do you think that Kate Beckinsale will be up for Leading Actress with "Love and Friendship"?
In that subject, I suspect that "Love and Friendship" will get nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. I suspect that Amy Adams will be up for Leading Actress for "Arrival". Best Animated Feature will have "Kubo", "Finding Dory", and "Your Name". |

Hmmm, what's the beating that "Sully" might get nominated for Best Picture, Best Director(Eastwood) and Best Leading Actor(Hanks)?

I have heard no buzz for anything regarding Love and Friendship in terms of acting so i will be surprised if it gets nominated. Kate Beckinsale isn't even a contender, an outside contender or even on the oscars radar. There isn't even a campaign for her.
As already mentioned, the best actress field looks firmly to be Amy Adams, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Ruth Negga and Annette Bening. Outside contenders seem to be Jessica Chastain and Taraji P Henson. |
