I'm not so sure, as we saw with the Lego Movie this is a quite unpredictable category.
As long as Zootopia doesn't win. |

To be honest, i never personally thought The Lego Movie had a shot and I thought Inside Out was always going to win it last year. So i wasn't entirely surprised
As long as Zootopia doesn't win. Zooptopia is quite thematically well placed to pick up votes given recent events, so I wouldn't rule it out. |

Lion, Hell or High Water and Hidden Figures are picking up momentum after the critic choice noms.
* Hidden Figures was missing (probably not seen in time) and Lion also mostly (except for best youth performance). As for Animated, I can definitely see Zootopia winning as it was the surprise hit this year. |

Dev Patel is becoming a new contender fora best supporting actor nom for his role in lion

Could "Your Name" be in with a chance?
It wasn't on the Annie Awards list of Nominees or the Critics Choice list of Nominees |

The animated category is probably the most competetive it has been in years, Zootopia, Moana, Finding Dory, Sing, Trolls, The Secret Life Of Pets and Kudo And The Two Strings to name a few

Almost half the film is when the character is a child and a young teen so while he's the main character he isn't in it as much as you'd think.
Thanks for that |

Surprised Hidden Figures and A United Kingdom haven't been mentioned. Elle in with an outside shot for Isabelle Huppert.

A United Kingdom has been mentioned up thread, however it won't be eligible for the Oscars because it is not released in the US unit Feb 17.

Doesn't look like it, no. I suspect this isn't going to make much of a dent internationally.

That's strange cause it had a lot of Oscar buzz before it was released. Maybe Loving has stolen it's thunder. Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga are strong contenders.
Loving does seem to be one of those films coming up on the rails. Incidentally I see Birth of a Nation has just come out on general release in the Uk with little fan fare, if ever an oscar contender lived by the sword and died by the sword it has to be that one! |

I know it got a high profile at the London Film Festival, but outside of that must admit I wasn't aware of much buzz for it.

I saw clips of Natalie Portman portraying Jackie Kennedy. I don't know how on earth she's receiving Oscar buzz because her performance is cringeworthy.

I could easily count on both hands such awful cringeworthy performances that won. |

Sometimes it's not even about the performance. It can be about the campaign and the power of the movie studio backing it on what eventually leads to a nomination.

Oscar buzz was far too early for that film even before it was released. And then all the controversy about it's director didn't help.
That being said, controversy aside I found it to be a pretty mediocre film when I saw it at the London Film Festival. It's well enough made and the central performance by Parker is actually quite good (if over indulgent at times) but it contains nothing that hasn't been done better before. I rather took the view it's earlier popularity owes more to timing than the film itself, but I guess we will never know. Quote:
