Director of LaLa Land is an incredible talent, 31 and already has two smash hit films under his belt. Great future ahead of him.
They said the same about Michael Cimino and many others over years. Hollywood is a very fickle business.

Similarly Richard Kelly looked destined for great things after Donnie Darko...

This is a problem for it, if you think many people will vote for pictures their friends are in then "La La Land" could be like "Brokeback Mountain" going against "Crash" and its cast of thousands
La-La famously has 150 SAG members doing a song and dance number in it's opening scene.

Yup "Another Day of Sun" is an impressive start to see people maybe half a mile away dancing but if I had a friend who had a speaking part in film A and a mile away dancing part in film B I'd vote for A

But "Manchester by the Sea" seems to a two part film so that will face the same trouble. Haven't seen Moonlight to judge how broad its cast is

And then came "Southland Tales"

I guess if you're Ron Howard you can afford a few flops (though he may be getting near the limit) but a new Director has to succeed every time

Fantastic performance from Denzel in Fences. He deserves to win another Oscar. Surely Viola Davis will win also. She should be nominated in the Best Actress category.

Probably, but will have less competition in supporting.

Is Rogue One eligible?

It would get my vote for Best Film.

There is some Oscar buzz but mainly for the technical side of things.

Hugely unlikely the actors would vote to give R1 any major awards, is assumed they'd be against the whole CGing dead actors into new films thing.

Best Film? it's a good film but not a great-film I think the winner of the Best Film Oscar should be something that changes how you consider the film or touches you on an emotional level. I saw Rogue 1 but it did neither. "La La Land" both my girlfriend and I were in tears

"Moonlight" I was still thinking about for days after

Seems really open in the Best Actor/Actress categories this year.

Affleck seems to be losing some momentum, and I'm wondering if one of the ladies will steal it from Stone.

viola is going for supporting actress, so she seems like a surefire bet to finally get one.

She may nab a Best Actress nod as she won the Best Actress Tony for her stage performance in Fences.

Though the committees are the ultimate arbiter of which category an actor is entered I think the studio will be pushing for support as the lead category is so strong

Kate Winslet campaigned for a nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category for The Reader and won the GG and SAG awards for Best Supporting Actress but AMPAS nominated her in the Best Actress category for which she won.

Winslet was clearly the lead in the Reader though, whereas Washington has the main role in Fences.

Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit is another recent example of an actress being put in the wrong category to increase their Oscar chances.

You could even argue that Anthony Hopkins should have been nominated in the supporting category for Silence of the Lambs given his lack of screen time.

Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay cancelled each other out when they both got Best Actor nominations for the Dresser, they might both have won had the latter been put in the supporting category.

It's a bit of an insult though that an actress who has a significant amount of screen time in the movie has to settle for a Best Supporting Actress nom just as a strategic move.

I doubt she'll care as long as she wins.

She deserves the Best Actress award for her performance. Much better than Emma Stone and Natalie Portman.

she deserved it for the help aswell, and yet meryl's thatcher impression got it. she also deserved it for her small but powerful performance in doubt and for some reason i can't wrap my head around penelope cruz got it.

I saw Fences today, and can 100% confirm Viola Davis will win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. It's powerful stuff! (Though everyone seems to know that already.)

When I first heard she was campaigning in supporting I assumed it was category fraud like Alicia Vikander, but I think they can justify it. She has a lot of screen time but has a lot less lines and initially is very much a supporting role to Denzel Washingtons character.

Just a heads up that Fences is making the rounds online. I will be watching it later without a doubt as this is one of the few films i am really eager to see.
