My dvd player is starting to have an issue with opening the tray if there's no disc in it (i.e it won't) so was going to buy a new dvd player.

All the dvd players seem to be blu-ray now and on the boxes in the shop have "wi-fi required" all over them.

Is it not possible just to get a blu-ray/dvd player that isn't connected to the internet anymore? The reason i ask is i go into hospital for lengthy periods of time and unplug all electrical equipment while i'm away; i want a player with good quality image from dvd played on an HD tv but not one that needs to be connected to the internet constantly.

Have i misunderstood what the wi-fi connection is required for? Also any advice as to what models to buy gratefully received. I feel out of the loop on this as my old player/recorder has lasted years.

You don't normally 'need' an Internet connection at all, and you certainly never need a permanent one.

Basically the Internet connection is there to give you access to CatchUp TV (while it still works!) and for software updates.

Just connect it to the Internet if you want to watch catchup, and occasionally to see if there's any updates. We deliver and install loads of BD Players, it's very rare to ever connect one to the Internet - and mine downstairs certainly isn't

Thanks Nigel. I wondered if that was the case or whether they now needed constant software updating like windows 10 seems to

Any recommendations for a decent-ish one around the £100 (or will i have to get a bigger budget)? all my films etc are on dvd and i've read some blu-ray players have poor dvd playback.

I just got this one for under £50

http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/t...s/BD-J4500R/XU

It doesn't do 3D though but is cheap and plays most video formats on a USB stick.

You can still buy DVD players, I think Sainsbury's, among others, sell this one.

The Sony ones seem pretty good, and DVD playback is better than on a DVD Player.

A decent BR player doesn't need to cost £100.

If you don't mind a refurb then Panasonic's eBay outlet is worth a look - it's where I got one from.

If you have a Richersounds store near you they have some fairly decent players for under a ton.

Seems these deals are all instore exclusives, not so good if you don't have a store anywhere nearby.

Argos have got an Alba DVd player for around £20 if you just want a DVd player, basic but will do the job, it also have a Samsung BD J4500 non smart blue-ray player for around £40.

I have a Sony BDPS1700B myself, it is ok, it does what it says on the box, it do not need to be connected to the net all the time and having the catch up functions is useful, but I think it cost me about £70.
