Yes, another trial multiplex moving forward. Still nothing from London or the big boys.
Will have to wait and see if that is the case and whether the other stations on UDAB will follow suit |

Trial London already has two DAB+ services, NuSound Radio and Angel Radio.

Angel is also 32k v1 DAB+ mono in Norwich, but 32k v2 stereo with SBR in Brighton. Doubt if any of Angel's music is stereo, so why v2 stereo Brighton? The Manchester minimux also has some 32k v1 mono stations and Cathedral Radio 64k v1 stereo (no SBR). |

hanssolo, whilst you might be good at regurgitating technical specifications from websites, you'll find that all low-bitrate DAB+ broadcasts use SBR and is a fundamental part of HE-AAC.
I've had such an impossible task of convincing you that 112k streams do not sound any better/worse on certain DAB radios that I'm not confident you'll actually take note the first time round. |

I was reading in http://www.radiomagonline.com/blogentry/1288 "SBR can make it sound very tiresome if the source material is over processed" Perhaps something for stations to watch out for? |

I hit a sweet spot for Trial Brighton in Ashdown Forest today. Had a very quick flick through some of the stations. Although my radio doesn't show bitrates, I have a pretty good ear for judging quality and bit rates.. Have to say they were sounding pretty reasonable and arguably better than Jack on Surrey and a lot better than Fun and Mellow Magic on SDL. Not particularly metallic at all.

Does that assessment also include Angel Digital and Radio Caroline broadcast on that multiplex?
But from what I heard, Caroline sounded OK. |

Interesting, according to Wohnort Nusound London is 33k v2 (SBR - Spectral Band Replication and parametric stereo) whereas Angel in London is 32k v1 mono ( without SBR).

Having heard the remaining 192k station in Brighton, Juice 107.2, I can share how I felt it was really pleasant to listen to on my big headphones. A lovely top end with no mushy distractions that you'll likely find on commercial 128k stations (Smooth Sussex, for example, showed much evidence of this). Both music tracks and live speech from the presenter sounded lovely. However, a pre-recorded programme aired later on in the evening didn't sound as clean. Maybe the transmission chain quality was so good it was able to show up any deficiencies in the production process.
Radio Norwich, on the other hand, whilst also at 192k, sounded rather flat and uninspiring when I heard it back in September. |
