I've never seen any of the Star Wars films, any of the Lord of the Rings and none of the Harry Potter series. They just don't interest me one bit.

Amazing how the top rated films on IMDB (obviously rated by viewers) and the Top 50 films rated by the British Film Institute are so very different

Have to say, I disagree with the verdict that Vertigo is the best film of all time! I don't even think it was Hitchcock's best film.
I agree. Vertigo was a great film but I think Psycho was his best. I also loved The Lady Vanishes, Rear Window and Dial M for Murder more than Vertigo.

That's because the average person watches films differently to professional critics. We watch them and just enjoy them but the critics always think there has to be some 'message' in the film or some deep meaning or whatever.

Well, it's no surprise that the public vote differs from highbrow critics lists! There's some gems in both lists, but generally the populist votes depress me with their obviousness whilst the critics list depresses me with the same obvious choices. Both run in a pack. Better to pluck choices from BOTH lists! Hey I LOVE me some Tarkovsky, but, sometimes I feel the need to watch trash thats SO BAD its good - yes Verhoeven i'm looking at you - Showgirls !!!!

The likes of Passion of Joan of Arc, Sunrise & Man With a Movie Camera are only really worth watching if you're interested in the history of cinema.
The biggest unseen ones I can think of: Grease The Sound of Music What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Life Is Beautiful Tokyo Story Any Marx Bros film Stalker A Streetcar Named Desire Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf? |

Whilst not the best barometer for what’s considered “great”, I will refer to all the Best Picture winners from 1960 onwards (I could go beyond 1960, but thought nearly 60yrs of films is enough to go on).
Of all the winners since 1960, I have not seen the following: The Apartment Tom Jones A Man for All Seasons In the Heat of the Night Midnight Cowboy Patton The Sting Annie Hall Ordinary People Terms of Endearment Amadeus Driving Miss Daisy 12 Years A Slave Spotlight |

The godfather.
There's never a bad time to watch it. It's easily the best of the 3, despite the charms of the second. |

I would say that highly acclaimed or recommended films I have seen recently (eg: in the last year or so) and wish I had seen sooner include: The Sand Pebbles Paper Moon Whiplash The Bridges of Madison County The Crucible The Fearless Vampire Killers In The Heat Of The Night There are probably loads more if I really think about it, but I'd recommend these to anybody. |
