If Bethany does go out with a Barlow in the future

Spoiler

I can see Peter going out wth Alya.

Is there anyone on the Street left who Toyah dated when she was last in the show?
Don't think there is?
I only remember her with Spider, then Sam Kingston the mechanic!! Think Ty fancied her at one point but she wasn't remotely interested!!

Sure you aren't thinking about Maria when she became pregnant after a one night stand with Toyah's fella?
Toyah was her mate & went with her for the abortion & when it was all revealed Toyah left after attacking the guy when she mistakenly thought he'd forced himself on Maria!!

You may be right about Toyah but I don't remember it!!
You're probabky right. I remembered they were both with the same bloke and one of them fell pregnant but wasn't sure which one it was.

Was she 17? I thought she was 16 and assumed Martin was nearing 40. OK, so not that bad then, but it was still borderline creepy! Especially as Martin had a step-daughter the same age as Katy.
Well exactly, so how much creepier would it be with Peter at 51 & Bethany just 16!! Yuck!!

Katy was 16:

I'm interested to see the first meeting between the pair when Toyah returns, especially if Maria is by then having an affair with her new step sister's bloke (Aidan!!) Life in Soapland gets very complicated doesn't it!!

Edit: Thinking about it Toyah & Eva wouldn't actually be step sisters would they as Toyah was Janice's girl & we never got to meet her Dad, even though she went looking for him once!!

I had the same thought as you, Mark. I really hope they don't go there though. It would ruin Peter as a character. It would be Martin Platt all over again.
Yes, it really would and I don't think they'd do that to a legacy character like Peter.

Especially not when they are building the Barlows back up as the principal family.

Alya is another good guess.

Yeah the actress that plays her is 20.

She is 16 so it would be legal, it would be just like the Dr. Bailey/Belle thing on Emmerdale.

Except for the fact that Dr Bailey is 35 - 17 years younger than Peter!

Katy and Sarah were friends as well until Katy and Martin started dating as well.

Thanks. I thought she was, as the fact that she was barely legal was a big plot point.

I always find it odd that Maria and Nick barely acknowledge each other considering they were engaged at one stage

Well that adds to the controversy of it. You know Kate Oates likes to shock the audience and this would be pretty shocking.

Yes she does like shocking people but even she wouldn't go that far - this is Corrie after all and she wouldn't dare go there.

Yes, I think 17 to 35 is wuite different to 16 to 51. They're both rather yuck but one much more so.

Also Bailey wasn't a character we knew or os probably meant to be long term so it didn't really matter if we found him predatory. It wasnt an important character to the shows history that Oates was potentialky destroying.

Finally, you could sympathise wit Bailey a little as he met her as a young woman and believed her to be older than she was as Belle lied about it. Peter would know exactly how old Bethany is from the start ad she was a few months ikd when he moved back in 2000 and he knows her family.

Yes it is, though they didn't part on good terms & I think there was one scene with them being awkward with each other just after Maria returned from her stay in Ireland (2010) but nothing else really until earlier this year when they suddenly had several scenes together just after she returned from her stay in Cyprus!!
Obviously absence makes the heart grow fonder, or at least remember!!

IDK I just have this feeling its happening after they bumped into each other last night. If the story hasn't been planned I think they did it to test the waters on how the audience would react to their paring.

I hope they don't, it would ruin Peter as a character as he's 35 years older than Bethany who is only 16 herself.

Peter is also only 7 years younger than Brian Tilsley who's Bethany's Grandfather and is 22 years older than both Bethany's parents Sarah and Neil as well.

A lot of Corrie viewers have been watching it since it since it started in the 1960s and they won't want to alienate all those viewers, get loads of complaints etc particularly since advertisers pay them lots of money to advertise during Corrie ad breaks. They won't go there.

Yeah I think the story could ruin Peter, but I still wouldn't put it past Kate Oates.

Yeah but controversy sells these days

I agree.

If it was somebody else then maybe but Peter is not only a legacy character from arguably the shows mist important family through the decades who many viewers remember being born, he has been one of their most popular and critically well regarded characters in his own right since Gascoyne took over the part in 2000.

Every time he quits a huge deal.is made out of it, he's akways missed, they always wsnt him back. They're not going to risk having to lose the character for good just to get a cheap shock reaction.

In my opinion, obviously.

Bethany has been interested in older men, yes, but they're 10 years older (quite usual for a teenager I think, to fancy young men as opposed to boys their own age) not 35 years older.

Anybody thought they might have put it in as a red herring, purely to incite speculation since Gascoyne has stated that they'll be an unexpected love interest?

Classic misdirection.

Short term yes,but that would have to be weighed against the long ter harm in sacrificing such an important character.

Viewers that tune in because they've seen a tabloid screaming about a controversial plot tend not to stick around once that short term plot has played out so any gain is temporary. Meanwhile, loyal viewers going back decades become disillusioned and switch off so thetevis a danger of rstings actually going down.

You have to remember that whilst Corrie of course want to attract new viewers, it has the oldest demographic of all the soaps due to its age and reputation as the.most sedate and down to earth amongst them. Any producer with a half a brain doesn't risk losing that core audience.

It's not Hollyoaks (& I do by the way like Hollyoaks) where they assume a young audience who want constant excitement and melodrama and probably won't stay with the soap once their favourite characters have left and they themselves age. It expects a high turnover of characters and viewers in a way the other soaps don't.

Brookside is an example of a soap which started courting controversy and cheap stunts to attract interest and it burnt out, losing it's core audience and was cancelled. No EP wants to repeat that mistake.

I agree with everything you said, I just don't think this story is out of the realm of possibilities. Didn't Daran Little plan for Martin to be get with Sarah? If he was going to go that semi-incestuous route Kate Oates doing Peter/Bethany wouldn't be as bad in comparison.

Martin and Sarah.

I didn't know about this and I hope that wasn't true he's been her father from the age of 2.

Well last year when they had that Panel with the soap producers Daran stated that when he was working on Corrie that an actor left the show after refusing to do a story they had planned and I remember a few people on here were saying that he was talking about the actor that played Martin and that it was over them planning to put Martin with Sarah.

Not many things would stop me watching Corrie, that might!!!!!
Unfortunately something will stop you watching it tonight - damn football, yet again! Wish ITV and BBC would have channels just for, sport and stop assuming we all love it!
