BT has announced that customers of their Youview based TV (IPTV) service will soon benefit from a major free upgrade, which will introduce a new “image-rich” user interface (UI) that should also make it easier to access channels / on-demand content and many other things.

Oh no! They are moving in the Sky direction aaarghhhh! At present they are a welcome escape from Sky's "image rich" i.e. bloated adware interface, and now I'll have to suffer it on BT TV as well. GRRR.

FFS No! The best thing about the channel logos in the EPG is that it is possible to not display them as the only thing they are good for is not making it clear which channel is which. The UI already makes bad use of screen real estate and it sounds as if this will make it even worse.

I've just left Virgin Media for a number of reasons including the recent update to Tivo which made it sluggish and unresponsive on occasions, I hope that YouView doesn't go the same way

If you read the article it's not just about the new UI (in early 2017). In addition there will be:

- Inclusive BoxNation / BoxNation HD channel for BT Sport Pack subscribers from January
- Dolby Atmos sound on BT Sport 4K UHD (First UK implementation)
- 'Seamless' upgraded BT TV app to complement the new Youview UI

I know BT are heavily rumoured to be buying out YouView, but surely YouView should be announcing their own upgrade?

Either way, I agree with the above. 'Image-rich' UIs, be it Sky Q or Kodi or whatever, are just pointless, the only images needed are the show you want to watch.

None of which require an "image rich " and no doubt messy menu interface. Which is clearly included because Sky have done it (GRRR) and to make money. We can read, we don't need space-wasting image menus!!!

On the basis that it’s bt making the announcement and from reading that article, I’m interpreting that it’s their app both on the device and mobile which is being update in this iteration and not the overall youview interface. That’ll probably come but that’s not how I’m reading it in this article

Personally I'm choosing to reserve judgement on BT TV'S new look when I receive it and have tested it out for a while, rather than whinging and speculating before anything concrete has actually been revealed. I do like the current YouView interface, but I know there are people who don't, and nothing lasts forever, does it?

Also think it's good news about the addition of BoxNation. Though I'm not into watching boxing myself, many are and this may see a spike in new subscribers, particularly as there looks likely to be BoxNation in HD and Frank Warren is promising numerous live events with some big names in the sport. I posted about eighteen months ago about ways BT could make their Sports package as appealing as Sky's, and adding BoxNation to the BT Sport bundle was one of them.

How about a sneek peek courtesy of TalkTalk (presume BT and Retail will be basically the same).

That looks good, in my opinion. Obviously there will be branding differences and other subtle changes for BT, but if that's what the new interface will be like for us BT customers, I'm a happy camper. Frankly, as long as the menus continue to run smoothly and I can still access what I want when I want easily, the rest is just window dressing.

I had a reply off youview but think it's the same reply they've been saying for 2 years that there's talking to app providers and keep watching for updates.

What really started television image rich UIs though? For me, it was Netflix apps on TVs, people must have generally liked it, it was considered successful, and has spread from there.

I hate the image based UI's. Think the new Sky Q one is awful. So much wasted space taken up by images and menus compared to the old Sky HD one.
People keep saying that the Sky HD Ui is dated but I just can't understand what that means. The UI is quick, clear, easy to control, has a quick search facility and a TV guide that is really easy to quickly scan through.
I find it far quicker to read that the show on a station is "the Blacklist" than looking at an image and having to process who the actor is, what they've been in before, what type of clothing & scenery is in the small image etc to work out what the show is.

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php...ox-update.html

Partial quote, more in above link:

Over the next few months some 2.5 million UK owners of a YouView (IPTV) based set-top-box, which includes TalkTalk and BT’s broadband-based TV subscribers, will start to benefit from a major “next generation” update that will enable the platform to do more, work faster and harness Cloud technology.

Apparently the new update is akin to a “re-engineering and redesigning of its entire platform,” which the Joint Venture (JV) claims will deliver a new “simpler, more streamlined and image-led interface” (rendered using the HTML 5 standard). Owners should also benefit from improvements to how content is presented and chosen.
It all looks surprisingly well thought out. Although, I do hope it is not full of teething software bugs.

Bit off topic but cancelled BT TV in October, box worked absolutely fine after. Logged into My BT yesterday and was offered Essentials £2pm, Extra £5pm, Extra UHD £10pm. Might be worth checking out.
