I would never use a company like that if I was strapped for cash, I don't understand why anybody would now when you can find anything and everything on eBay for a good price with no hidden extras or unpleasant surprises. The new stuff is well priced enough, but if your prepared to take a refurb or used item you can get a good bargain. I got a refurbished Sony DVD recorder on there a few weeks ago for £9.50, a much better way than paying that weekly for the next 4+ years to a company like Brighthouse!

I can see why people do when they're skint. eBay's hit or miss isn't it? Then you've got to pay for delivery for a big item. I always try the secondhand furniture store and the supermarket's first, I' ve been burned by ebay >, so it's a last resort for me and I' ve worked for a certain other large online retailer, so I try not to support them

I avoid Brighthouse myself, because f I' m really stuck I usually can borrow some cash and buy secondhand or from the supermarket or online but not everyone's in that position and I think for a lot of people it's as well it's s good to get something new for a price they can afford, I don't t judge anyone for it. Bottom line, it's up to them how they spend their money and if they prefer to get something brand new and repay it, that's s their choice.

Brilliant - I do feel very guilty that I'm not watching it but I did see some of the repeat of episode 1 earlier on.

Hi Glendarroch, hope it's ok to ask here - why do people go to BH? Is it because they can't get credit elsewhere? I use my Very account to buy white goods etc., and find them quite reasonable, and you can spread the payment.

I' m no expert on the matter, you're d have to do a customer survey I don't t go there and it would be a last resort as I have debt enoughbut I made a few guesses in my post above and you're probably right about the credit too. I suspect they' re a lot more flexible than ither companies, plus they' re right there on your High St tempting you with nice stuff at affordable payments. It's s just that you'll be paying them forever more Maybe a lot of their customers are like me and hate online e shopping!

We had snow on the hills last week! Not at low ground though. Most of the week felt too cold for snow!

It is hit and miss, though the more you do it and get used to it the better you get and end up with far more hits than misses! I rarely use anything else for non everyday items. It is obviously possible to get burned but it's quite a low chance, especially if you use PayPal who tend to favour the buyer over the seller. It's a shame it's put you off as you could miss out on some decent stuff.

I don't watch it either, don't feel guilty about it though. I spent a very enjoyable evening listening to the theatre awards on radio 2 instead.

I rarely watch anything that the masses watch (planet earth, bake off, reality stuff), I prefer the stuff on bbc4 with only about a couple million views. I have never been one to follow the trend

Me too

I've just ordered a few Christmas pressies online. It's bliss being able to avoid the shops

Tbh although I hate shopping, I prefer to do it in person - you know see and feel the thing. I' ve worked in many shops too, so I know how important it is to keep them in business and employing people, especially round here where so jobs are so scarce, unfortunatelyI go online if I' m stuck ( eg for presents and stuff like that) but I' d rather give a shop the trade. I just try and go when the shops are quieter to avoid the rush! I find eBay and Amazon almost as stressful to use as a real shop anyway

You see I find shopping hugely stressful ( the lights and noise, particularly)but I still prefer actually getting out of the house to doing it online mind you I give Glasgow and Edinburgh a swerve at all times, I guess Stirling and Alloa are a lot quieter!

ED must have been good on Friday when we're re all talking about shopping

Same here. I get really panicky and as I get older, I just avoid anything stressful now. Any problems with a wrong delivery with Amazon or ebay is quite easy to resolve. I've always had a refund if there was a problem.

Me too!! I never enjoyed trying clothes on in shops either, so ordering them via catalogues is perfect for me.

I don't like trying on clothes either. I' m not a fan of shopping at all except for food I don't have to do it very often luckily - I got two feet inside Debenhams in Stirling last Thursday night, had a panic attack and had to leave! I like to be able to see daylight and fresh air! I couldn't go to a large city centre or a huge mall! I try to avoid Amazon, if I can, I had a nervous breakdown while working at their fulfilment centre ( although to be fair it wasn't t entirely their fault ) . I just really don't like online shopping because it does seem to be costing so many jobs sadly, but malls can be a nightmare when they're re busy. I' m lucky in one way that I don't have huge amounts of Christmas presents to buy so I get it done in one session. As for clothes, supermarket and Charity shop, no needs for huge department stores.

I like shopping and it is nice to see and feel something in the flesh first, but it's also nice to be able to have change left over for something else, something you don't often get with shop prices. And I know the shops need the custom but to be honest the few shops where I am really couldn't care less and don't do a great deal for their case. Their not in the slightest bit bothered if your happy with what you buy, most will really quibble if you need to return it and they don't care if you turn around and say you'll get it online instead - hell I don't think their even bothered if you walk in through the door or not! So while I do agree with needing to give the shops trade, I don't see why I should pay £££'s for something off someone local who will try to be awkward if it needs taking back, when I can get the exact same item at a fraction of the price with much better service off a complete stranger online!

I'm sounding a bit like a parrot..........but again, same here! I avoid any huge supermarkets and stick to small outlets for food. There's a farm shop just opened nearby so I'm hoping I can get all my produce from there on a quiet Sunday. I live in the countryside and would never be able to cope in a town or city.

Another one here - soooo much nicer to try on at home! Although of course you do have the option of trying on at home and taking back if you do hit the physical shops as well (in fact I've been known to buy something at my local Sainsburys and get bonus nectar points and then it doesn't fit so I take it back and they don't take the bonus points away).

My brother always has to buy his shoes mail order as he has a weird thing about trying shoes on and he has to wait and look at them for a couple of days after they arrive and kind of work up to actually trying them on. He once went into a shoe shop and virtually passed out just from the thought of it.

I think we might be in trouble if we continue too far with the current trend for online shopping.

I had a decent shopping precinct here in Stockport with the big 'names' drawing in the custom for the smaller shops. BHS is now a massive boarded up eyesore and right next door is a massive M&S, who are currently in the process of closing down stores or making them food only. Tbh, if M&S goes as well, my shopping precinct will be well on the way to being a ghost town.

At the same time, all the online stores are finding it's costing them a fortune in free returns on clothes and household items as people just use them as private 'changing rooms' nowadays - order 10 items, send 9 of them back. Online food shopping is apparently also a 'loss leader' because of the high transport costs.

I can quite easily see the day, in the not too distant future, when high street shops will be mostly gone and the prices online, (due to lack of competition), will be sky high.
