He was heavy handed but a lot of middle managers are. They might have been given training in employment law but often it doesn't really go on or they just don't refer what they should to HR.
Even major, global companies have these problems. A good friend currently signed off from work's HR dept are doing everuthing properly but her line manager keeps contacting her directly, without them.knowing, asking her to do things for her do effectively work when certified as unfit. She clearly just doesn't understsnd what her kegsll boundaries are and this is a huge multi national company.
There are also compsnies that will do things illegally assuming that the employee won't know their rights, won't want the hasdle of fighting them or won't have the money to do so.
In this case though, unless I missed it, he didn't say she'd lose her job, Denise jumped to that conclusion.
