I really hope the actress does return to give Emily a lovely departure story if this is true!
I'd like a few weeks of her helping out other characters around her with their problems as she does before peacefully passing away or something! If they do go down the passing away route, I do hope she receives a more respectful send off than Betty and Deirdre, both of which were sadly disappointing

If she doesn't return it will be an awful exit for a character who first appeared over 50 years ago.

This confirms what I think we already suspected.
Seems she left on her own terms - as befitting a very private lady. |

Sensible lady. She knows that the show she was once on is not the same thing anymore. It's called Coronation Street only in name now. It bears no relationship in quality of writing or acting to anything it once was, even not that many years ago. I've stopped watching it about 2 months ago after having watched since the early 80's. Real life is now more interesting than watching poor, unrealistic scripts being played out by poor and under rehearsed actors.
Eileen Derbyshire you are well rid. You were too classy for the tripe they now serve up. |

Eileen Derbyshire you are well rid. You were too classy for the tripe they now serve up. That's not to say that I'm happy. She is a huge loss, having been with the show since episode 15 Emily and Eileen are as integral as Ken Barlow. Sending her off to Peru was a laughably embarrassing move but it perfectly sums up the show that Corrie has become. Emily could easily have gone off to spend time with Mavis in the Lakes, but Corrie had to go for the outlandish and unbelievable option. Naturally. Congratulations on your retirement Eileen, you've more than earned it. |

A pity about the awful exit Corrie gave her, I mean hiking in Peru, really? It might have worked 20 years ago but it seems a bit unrealistic now given her age.
I hope Eileen has a wonderful retirement, she's well and truly deserved it. |

Until Corrie confirm she is definitely retiring I just refuse to believe it ☹️
I do hope tho that Eileen is enjoying her time off and if it is retirement that she has a happy one for many years but I would love her to return. 55 years is a stellar achievement |

The longer Emily stays in Peru the more nonsensical it becomes.

Given Emily's age, it would be realistic if they were to kill her off. I think a phone call or a letter saying that she's simply staying in Peru would feel very underwhelming. She's been a real stalwart and deserves a fitting send-off.

The thing is, they could easily have sent her off to stay with Mavis in the Lakes which would've been much easier for viewers to believe and far easier to explain in the long run. We could also have had the likes of Rita and Norris going off to visit Emily and Mavis for the day or a weekend here and there.
Then, when Emily doesn't return, it can be easily explained by saying that she wants to settle down in the countryside. Easy. Corrie seems to like to simplify what should be complex stories and then complicate the easy ones ...

It's the sun newspaper...
But if it's true it's very sad, is she still under contract? Is she not? I do think she should return for a few weeks then pass away at home with Norris, Rita ect around her maybe |

Seems a very presumptive article but I do doubt she'll return. She'll be missed!

I believe (and I stress, believe not know for a fact) that Eileen Derbyshire was among some of the established cast members who moved to episode-only contracts a number of years ago. That obviously means that she could still be under contract with ITV but doesn't have a fixed number of hours/episodes that she needs to work.
If that makes sense ... Who else is on one of those? |

Right yeah, so she only gets paid for what she works and she's not contacted like 45 hours a week ect.
Who else is on one of those? I think it was only applied to the 'secondary' established cast because ITV were paying them too much for doing relatively little. |
