Mars (UK pace)
This looks interesting although not sure why it's on 3 different channels Atlantic, nat geo and fox. It seems they really want people to see this.

I've got it set to record anyway. |

I noticed it was on Atlantic but not Fox too, I wonder if they'll just be showing the first episode then only show it on Nat Geo from next week to entice people to buy the extra sky pack?
I've got it set to record anyway. |

Do you think 'Mars - Novo Mundo' on Nat Geo at 11pm is just a repeat of the 9pm episode ?

Yeah the dramatic impact of the mission was weakened with the constant flash backs and real life space scientist//engineer intrusions. I'll stick with it though.

Until Jim Lovell made an appearance near the end, I wasn't sure if the 'talking heads' were 'real' or actors - and was veering more towards the latter.

Gave up with this...the format didn't work for me, it didn't grip me and no tension.

I don't mind the talking head science stuff.........apart from te fac that Nat Geo have been showing hours and hours of Mars documentaries for the last week so we've had it up to the eyeballs
Even so I could have watched another one if it was new It was the 'drama' that I thought was so lame..........it was so formulaic. If you've ever seen a science fiction film you could see that this was science fiction by numbers assemble a team of different races, genders etc........the only hope of mankind, Earth looks on anxiously remarkably with 17 seconds to countdown the captain offers them the choice of walking away...........that was a killer blow to credibility then we have the 'oh, no it's all going wrong' then we have the race against time in floating motion to stick a wotsit in the thingymajig........ that's where I gave up....... |

An hour of live footage of the Mars Rover asleep would have been more exciting and believable than this.
They should have let Fox make the drama AS a drama with good script and cast and Nat Geo the documentary discussing each episode straight after assessing the real science. This way was hopeless - making the drama lame and trivialising the science by making viewers confused over what was 'real' and what was not. Someone in pre production should have figured out this was not working as it was one of the worst misjudgements of a potentially good idea I have ever seen. For older viewers the Mars mission reminded me of the old ITV show 'Alternative 3' (an April Fools joke show that was presented Orson Welles War of the World style as if real and did fool some people despite being obviously acted). Any serious drama that reminds you of that spoof is in big trouble. Though over the years I have still been asked many times in lectures if Alternative 3 was real. So who knows. |

I recorded episode one last night and watched it this morning, unlike most people on here I thought it was very good especially the fact that they interspersed fiction with fact plus the fact that Elon Musk allowed Spacex failures to be shown was very open and honest.

I guess it's better to be bored witless in UHD than HD!

Spot on swingaleg. This was rather disappointing, guess I was hoping for something closer to Defying Gravity.
The acting was pretty second rate (the commander pretending to battle x number of G's to get back to the cabin after swapping the faulty board, please...) The shots on board Deadulus and the couple of external once from space looked very low budget 1/3 of the show appeared to be an advert for SpaceX and Elon Musk. I was surprised Tesla didn't get a mention at any point As mentioned by swingaleg the drama itself was too predictable |

Well, I really enjoyed it. Being on National Geo it was never going to be a pure drama and I thought the documentary aspect worked well - even though it was partially an advert for SpaceX
For a proper Mars drama, I hope that the adaption of Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy which has been in development in various forms for years will finally make it to our screens. |

Based on a Ray Bradbury short story I remember it as being pretty good though it might look dated now |
