I remember one Mars TV series.......'The Martian Chronicles' back in the early 80s
Based on a Ray Bradbury short story I remember it as being pretty good though it might look dated now |

I can remember it giving me nightmares for some reason. It's all available on YouTube now - and, yes, it looks very dated.

Just watched episode 1. Bit weird, doesn't really seem to know what it's trying to be - sci-fi TV series, "Mission to Mars documentary" or SpaceX ad-reel. Not really done any of those very well, apparently. And there's something about the "filmic" nature of the image quality that looks weird to me.

I recorded it last Sunday and still haven't watched it, seeing as I won't be able to watch the other episodes I don't think I will.

I struggle to understand what 2033 doctor says due to her strong accent.

I'm puzzled where they've ended up? Wasn't there a mention of a Russian base as well as a US base in episode one?

National Geographic were never going to produce a big budget drama with an all star cast but I'm still enjoying it for what it is. |

I wish that I could remember the name of a TV show we watched about Martians at junior school in the early 1980s.

Watched ep1 and thought it was good. That one was in UHD but no sign of ep 2 in UHD yet.

1. I don't like the switching between the drama and factual bits (should be first third factual then go to all drama); 2. Rather than be an accurate dramatic interpretation of an actual Mars mission, it's trying to be a poor clone of The Martian where everything goes wrong and needs to be fixed. Verdict: good concept but poorly executed. I prefer this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?annota...&v=YH3c1QZzRK4 (long play version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u886CmxlY4) |

I watched the first episode and thought it was OKish. A bit too much of an ad for SpaceX for my liking.
I started to watch episode 2 but I got 20 minutes in and found it mind numbingly boring. in 20 minutes there was about 2 minutes set on Mars, and that was in the rover with the crew mooning over the doofus captain. I turned it off then. The Martian this ain't. |

The drama team needed sacking. What a poor tale that was! Can't believe Nat Geo thought that this was acceptable.

I FF'd through a lot of ep. 2 - maybe 20 minutes of it. I can see why they wanted to end the episode where they did, but frankly there just wasn't enough "story" to sustain it. And all the flashbacks just seem like padding.

I had high expectations for Mars, but after The Martian it was always going to be a hard act to follow. That said, I've been really disappointed. Mixing documentary with drama doesn't work. The characters have little depth and I don't really care what happens to them. Mission Control seems to be a couple of dozen people lounging around inside a geodesic dome. I'll stick with the series until the end, but overall it could have been so much better.

I gave up last week afer about 10 minutes, my main issue with it was I was finding it hard to understand what the foreign characters were saying, the only one I did understand was the leader of the team and they bumped him off in episode two, if it was a real mission I'd be very surprised if there were no British people on the crew.

Let's face it - in the real world they'd all be white men.
For the first three episodes it's been one third current day talking heads, one third the actors telling us how important it all is, and one third drama. I wouldn't mind the current day stuff, but as I'm a fan of SpaceX et al none of it was new to me. The drama elements were very weak. It seems like the crew wanted to fail. They don't communicate, which is both stupid and unrealistic. If the leader had admitted how injured he was, they might have found a plan that let him survive. They had a rover with the capacity for all of them, but not the weight. They drove it so hard it broke, so the journey ended up taking longer than it would had they gone slower. They never considered leaving one or two people back at the lander. As I recall they had 3 days air left, which would have lasted longer with fewer people. And who travels for 6 months with 6 months and 3 days worth of air? And that geologist standing in the lava tube not telling anyone what she was seeing. All so ridiculously stupid and unrealistic. I wanted to like it, but it's a chore to watch. |

Well I did say the drama team should be sacked. Silly for a serious science broadcaster to let itself be associated with such rubbish.

I hope in 20 years we'll have progressed beyond that.

Tbh, in terms of entertainment value, I actually think that The Last Days on Mars (2013) is better than Mars Novo Mundo: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1709143/

While I remember, I also recommend Europa Report which I really liked. |

I watched 3 and 4 this morning. In 3 they seemed to go from only having a few hours of air left to finding the cave and building the colony within a few minutes. I also think it would have been better to concentrate more on the drama instead or constantly going back and forth to 2016 and 2033. It's obviously trying to be like the Martian and not really succeeding.

I am absolutely loving this.
I am really enjoying the mixture of fact and fiction, documentary and drama. The end of Ep 5 was breathtaking. You could see it coming early on, but that made it even more tense for me. |
