Yes, such a novelty idea, isn't it?
I think I've seen enough people staring into the abyss, looking at phone boxes, dry humping a lamp post, being lowered from the ceiling, riding a flying dodgem, coming out of a campervan, playing snooker, etc, etc, etc. all in order to "start" the dance.

It's actually to start "the show," or elements thereof. It's the difference.
We have to put up with the "dansense," (nonsense) if we want to see dancing. Otherwise the show would go the way of "Come Dancing."

It's the gimmicks that attract the additional viewers that justifies the BBC continually throwing money at it.
It's pretty old for a contemporary Saturday night entertainment show now.

I think very few people like the gimmicks. It's like the comedy VTs, just something to put up with unless (very rarely) done well

Well, over the last few years, there's been a dramatic increase in the ratings, the dancing is no different, so somebody must like them, eh?

No. It could be despite the gimmicks of course.
The thing is the gimmicks/props rarely work well. I liked Ore's umbrella & Giovanni dancing with the broom this year because they fitted in to the dances. Other things like that bloody bench just seem to be shoved in there and they don't work with the dance.
Occasionally liwering from the ceiling can work, it fitted in well with Naga's theme for example BUT she nearly got stuck in the harness... Other times it seems to be a case of 'well we have the hoist, what can we use it for? EVERYTHING!'

I can see why they wasted half the dance firing Russell Grant out of a cannon. It was because he couldn't dance and was injured but I hope they don't do anything as lengthy and tedious with Ed.
