I don't watch Euronews that much myself but if NBC took a stake in it and linked up with MSNBC for a couple of hours I would consider watching it.

(AT LAST!!!)

This now means that 13 out of the 23 versions of ITV/STV/UTV that exist are now in HD, with only ONE primary region to switch.

Good news!
”

Just been watching the Lunchtime News programmes. Based on that 20760 is actually ITV Westcountry South West (Plymouth area) and 20770 is ITV Westcountry West (Bristol area).

Thanks for the info, I always did wonder what happened to it!

After seeing listings for it in the newspapers, when I first got satellite in 1991, I assumed it would be on there but it wasn't. The shop had never heard of it when I enquired.

I often wondered why they didn't join the Sky package and encrypt like most of the other English speaking general entertainment channels at that time.

Was it a service originally aimed at cable operators?

It was primarily a cable channel on 13 East yes.

Thanks for clarification - I had them the wrong way round!

When Super Channel launched in 1987 - all services were aimed at cable operators.

You had to have a licence to have satellite equipment at home - I still have mine.

IIRC EBN was broadcast from 6am-noon on the same channel as Bravo.

EBN later merged with CNBC

IIRC- NBC Superchannel was briefly on Astra 1D before it became CNBC. The Eutelsat IIF1 version morphed in to National Geographic (Superchannel had carried Nat Geo branded programmes for some time) however NBC (less the Superchannel bit) carried on as a SCPC digital channel (and a sod to tune in) on the same transponder as Nat Geo analogue. NBC carried the Tonight Show, Late Night, Later and Today, as well as a couple of low budget comedies (Union Square and Mr Rhodes). Can't remember what filled the rest, but I think there was some German content (Edit- called GIGA TV live- thank you Wikipedia) As said before, the NBC content was eventally dropped, and Das Vierte was born. However there was a channel back on Astra within the Spanish Canal+ service (Mediaguard encrypted) called CNBC-NBC. This was short lived, and carried CNBC during the day, and NBC entertainment content in the evenings.

Presume its to do with the advertisement of betting firms who pay for the greyhound racing on the Satellite feed , nearly all the adds are the bookmakers

Is it correct that those who still have these defunct satellite licences don't need a TV licence as long as they only watch or record channels broadcast from satellite?

Yes.
The Licence was issued by the UK Government and never expires, it can be revoked by notification in writing by the Government to the licence holder, which in my case, hasn't happened. Several Years ago I was prosecuted for no TV Licence and produced the Satellite licence in court, the prosecution immediately dropped the case before the magistrates could rule on it - I guess they didn't want the precedent.

One minor change from last Saturday in case you missed it:

In the UK GOLD and GOLD +1 were renamed Xmas GOLD and Xmas GOLD +1.

In Ireland only the +1 version has been relabelled.

Thanks, I've often wondered how TVL would handle someone in your position.

Do you still get numerous letters, visits etc telling you to buy a licence or face the consequences?

Wish i'd have bought one when I first got satellite in 1991, even if it was £500 it would have saved me a fortune!

Wonder if they're transferable or users can 'change address'

Edit: I've set up another thread here to stop taking this thread any further off topic

Oh yes, still get letters and visits, I just tell them to check their records. Best £10 I ever spent
