My local Tesco Express is absolutely rammed after 4pm on a Sunday once the big shops are closed, and it's all people trying to do a weeks shopping in what is just a corner shop, If convenience stores are all that's open then that's where people will go.

well, whatever. But what kind of loon would plan ahead to do one week of shopping in a convenience store on Boxing Day?

I'm lucky in the sense that my husbands restaurant where he works doesn't open xmas day so he at least gets that day off. He booked xmas eve off last year but this year he's requested Boxing Day instead so we do get the two days together. My sister who is a care assistant has always had to work some part of xmas day although I think it's either been early morning or late afternoon never the full day.

In terms of the shops opening or not it doesn't bother me. I have been to the Boxing Day sales but I wouldn't lose my shit if they closed.

All shops? That would be very difficult and annoying for those who don't drive and have to shop every day!

I'm not sure that anyone has to shop every day and those people I see stocking up with a couple of trolleys piled high clearly do drive.

Ah, but apparently if enough people don't have a "need" to shop on Boxing Day, or would like Christmas to be snowy and traditional, the government should introduce legislation to ensure they get their way.

What else should the government ban because there's no "need" for it, I wonder?

My ex worked for a major supermarket chain who was open on Christmas Eve until lunchtime. Whilst they were having a drink/celebration once closed there were always people banging on the doors looking to shop

For some, perhaps, but I find shopping at the best of times a mopind-numbingly tedious chore, and I'm hanged if I'm going to do it on Boxing Day. Perhaps if more people took this approach there'd be no need for petitions because it would stop being profitable.

People seem to think Oh Boxing day is just one day and shop workers will get Christmas day off, but that's not the point, I live on the Isle of Wight my 86 year old dad lives in London, I don't drive and there are no trains Christmas day or Boxing day, so if I was told I had to work Boxing day I wouldn't be able to travel to see my dad as I wouldn't be able to get back and at 86 I am not going to have many Christmases left with him am I?

If I worked as a Nurse or any other profession that traditionally had people working over the whole Christmas period least I would have a chance to book the time off or make it clear to my bosses and work mates during the year I would not be working.

But I run a charity shop and am the main key holder, if my charity suddenly decide that I had to open my shop, well it wouldn't happen I would refuse.

So what are you moaning about?

Do these workers get extra pay.

When I worked, I got paid extra to work on a Bank Holiday and it was double time in addition to my salary.

You're closed on Boxing Day, that's how it is. The what ifs are irrelevant. If your going down the what if road to make some sort of point then as many what ifs can be made to counter your point.

Well said. They complain about that yet I've not had a "family" christmas in what will be my third year this christmas. I work from 10 in the morning till 10 at night, and by the time I get home I'm too tired for turkey or a few drinks, I go to bed and wake up early the next morning to do Boxing Day lunches. So tbh I've not much sympathy for them either.

That's one thing I never understand. Shops over a certain size have the option to open any 6 hours between 10am and 6pm, why do most of them insist on 10-4 when 12-6 would work better?

I can assure that the large retailer I work for pays neither their staff, nor management a penny more for working at these days, Christmas eve, boxing day and new years day is a normal day from 7.30 til 6.30, and no hols are allowed over that period, people have to pay for taxis to and from work, people on minimum wage working a 4 hour shift paying £15 in taxis for a few hours work, meanwhile any problems occurs, everyone above store level is at home with their family, so your on your own.
you can tell when head office Finnish up for Christmas, you get a page full of emails from all depts telling you what they expect from your store, then an email saying the sender is away until dec 27th.
