The east? What does that mean?

Didn't Christianity come from the east?

Sweet FA to do with losing christian values or bowing down to the east.

It's to do with greed, selfishness, entitlement, capitalism and consumerism. The worst traits of humanity.

I can only imagine the apocalyptic panic-buying hysteria of the moronic masses faced with the prospect of no shopping for an additional day.

So therefore yes, I fully support the movement as that would be quite fun to watch

We lost our "Christian values" when we started sailing around the world taking what ever country we wanted for the Empire.

On the contrary. Proselytisation is the guiding principle of all 'big three' religions, though thankfully at least two of them can't be bothered to put much fervour into it these days.

damned search function doesn't work. 11 pages I searched for this.
This is being debated by MPs now after getting 100,000 petitions. But the leading perspective according to the news article is 'we won't decide how retailers run their shops or how they want to serve their customers'.

So nothing is likely to change.

I don't have a problem with them being open but I hate the thought that retail workers *have* to work it. If they are given leeway to cover the shifts so staff who want to work it can but those who don't can book it off.

But I suspect in some places they may be restricted like we were in the care sector and not allowed to book days off over the Xmas period and everyone had to do their fair share so none of us could go away to stay with family for any length of time or make big plans because it wasn't worth while when you had to be back to work.

We accepted it as part and parcel of that kind of work but this is different - lots of sectors like the care sector have to work but it's really not necessary for shops to open on Boxing Day.

But if retailers are left to decide of course most won't change their opening hours on boxing day. I think that's a shame. One of the reasons I avoided retail when I was looking to get out of nursing - out of the frying pan...

Newest compromise- all large stores may close on Boxing Day. I guess that means the big supermarkets.
Mark.

I agree.

Which is why the Scottish approach to New Year's Day would be the best for Boxing Day. Amend the Christmas Day Trading Acts 2004 and 2007 with a clause that the provisions can be extended to Boxing Day by a Statutory Instrument. But the SI can only be introduced after a report on the economic impact and impact on family life concludes that closing shops on Boxing Day would have a positive outcome overall.

In practice, it means that shops can't put workers under pressure to work - if someone wants the day off, they're almost always going to get it. It's why a lot of shops in Scotland open fairly normal hours on Boxing Day, but more restricted hours on New Year's Day (e.g. our local Asda is open 9-6 on Boxing Day, but only 12-6 on New Year's Day).

What is there to compromise on? It's not law that shops have to be open on Boxing Day so either the big chains want to open or not, it's as simple as that.

I'd love the shops to be shut on Boxing day. I know it probably won't happen as big businesses like CURRYS, ARGOS etc will be putting pressure on the Gov not to too. We shut down on 20th and re-open on the 9th, but that's the building trade for you.

Problem is without any kind of government intervention none of the big retailers will be willing to close on Boxing day for fear of losing trade to rivals who would decide to stay open.

I would have no issue with the shops being shut on Boxing Day. Just make sure you are prepared so you don't need to do any shopping for a few days. If you forget anything, either suck it up or wait until the 27th. Simple.

Having said that, you never hear people say "oh, those poor hospitality workers having to work over Christmas". Why are they any different? Obviously those in the emergency services etc are a different kettle of fish.

It's important when people say shops being shut, we mean the big shops and superstores. If you need essentials your local newsagents or similar is open 24/7 and has no restrictions on openings.

Disagree. While it doesn't stop it certainly slows down compared to the hundreds of other days in the year.
