I was umming & aah-ing about buying a new Moto phone to replace my original Moto-E and I particularly want a phone with Corning Gorilla glass.
I looked at several recent reviews of the G series and the E series, some mention GG, some don't, (most say they have it).
I went to the Motorola website to check the specifications and most of the phone descriptions do not mention it (they used to, but not any more).
However there are a couple of phones on there that specifically say they have GG and that's the Moto G3 (3rd gen) and the Moto G4 Plus.

Seeking clarification I contacted Mororola support and they replied...

As of now no Moto E series and Moto G series devices are manufactured with Gorilla Glass.

I pointed out the two phones on the website and they replied...

Moto G 3rd gen device is manufactured with gorilla glass 3 but it is a discontinued device and Moto G4 plus device is not manufactured with gorilla glass.

So..... almost all the recent tech reviews (not to mention sales descriptions) say the Moto G4 series (and Moto E for that matter) phones have Gorilla glass and that's simply untrue.

A colleague has had a G3 since it came out and there's not a scratch on it - he bought a G4 Plus recently and the screen is covered in scratches already.

It's really put me off buying Moto.

Other than the camera and a few trivial things, the Moto E 3rd Generation does seem to be a step down from the Moto E 2nd Generation. For instance, the 2nd generation does have Gorilla Glass. I believe that the processor of the 2nd is clocked faster than the 3rd Generation.

Maybe a bit of a sweeping statement, but it looks like the jump to Lenovo has resulted in a focus on cost cutting rather than innovation, at least for some of the models.

I would consider lack of NFC to be the biggest minus point. No NFC no Android Pay no Android Pay equals a poor Android experience.

You are wrong about the Moto G4 Plus (and standard Moto G4), both of which definitely have Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Really, though Gorilla Glass 4 is more contemporary, but features on more expensive mobiles.

Hmm Moto's UK website certainly doesn't list Gorilla glass on the G4 Play and G4 but does say it has it on the G4 Plus

I have the G4 Plus and hit it with a hammer and dragged a stanley knife all over it and can confirm it's tough, I tried the same on my wife's G4 Play and the screen has smashed. I hope that helps clarify it.

Many reviews state they all have it, I wonder if it's an error by Moto or a more subtle move to reduce costs now they've got it reviewed and generally well received

Yeah, I don't really believe the original poster. Either confused or made up, it is not factual.

Granted Corning Gorilla Glass is only listed on Motorola's website on the Moto G4 Plus (which would be false advertising if the original poster was to be believed), but actually if you see the Plus and the standard G4 next to each other the screens and glass type are identical. I personally own the G4 Plus, and am currently using it as my everyday phone, and actually quite like it (no scratches on screen).

Corning would also disagree with you, none of the new Moto models are on the Gorilla Glass list...

To add to this point, Lenovo/Motorola don't actually say it has Corning Gorilla Glass if you read what they say, they are quite clever in saying:

Does the wording of this not suggest that models manufactured previously may have had GG, whereas anything coming out of the factory now doesn't?

The Corning Gorilla Glass website is just out of date for Moto, and has not been updated to reflect any of the recent Moto releases (e.g. the Moto Z, which has Gorilla Glass 4).

The OP is just flat out wrong.

I've never used Android Pay. Isn't it just another contactless payment system? My main bankcard doesn't even have that at the moment.

Why should I make it up?

The Corning website is somewhat out of date for Moto, not just for Moto E or Moto G.

Customer services representatives do frequently get things wrong, particularly on more technical aspects.

The only possibility of the original poster being correct is that in some other markets there might be some other variants of the Moto G4 / G4 Plus that do not include Gorilla Glass, but the Europe version definitely does have it

How can you tell what is Gorilla Glass, as against another toughened glass?

Other than iPhones, which use some other different, but really good glass, the only smartphones I have ever held with toughened, but not Gorilla Glass were the Nokia Lumia 520 and some sort of Huawei, and if you simply knock it, they felt much less substantial glass (I did not do any scratching, obviously, but see the Youtube videos linked above of the G4 Plus scratch and drop tests).

Gorilla Glass is good stuff, I think probably slightly better than the ion-strengthened glass of recent iPhones.

I think the confusion here is actually over Moto ShatterShield, which the Moto G does not have:

Sony phones also came with a different glass. Corning isn't the only player, and obviously it promotes itself as being the best - but sometimes you have to wonder if the tech press merely talk about Corning as the best because it's the only company they really know about.

Well, the published information is confusing, that's why I asked for clarification from Motorola.
Maybe their reply was wrong, I don't know. I'm just reporting what they told me.

In that case why wouldn't they mention it in the specs for the G4 E3, etc. as they do for the G4 Plus.

Dunno - perhaps someone else would care to contact Mororola UK customer services and see what they say. They are fairly quick to respond.

Motorola seemed to get confused about which phones/variants/colours had dual SIM. I do wonder what's up with Lenovo, as it was never that complicated originally (when the Moto G and E first came out).
