Should the Salsa be dropped?

I don't mind the Salsa, sort of disco dance thing. I find the Samba the kiss of death for many couples, it and the Rumba are my two least favourites.”

The Charleston was introduced to DWTS in their Season 9, which was autumn 2009. The Charleston was introduced in Strictly in the 2009 series as well.

When they introduced the Charleston to DWTS, they also introduced three other dances (Bolero, Lambada and Two-Step) which didn't last very long. They've since introduced jazz and contemporary, and occasionally also have other dances (disco, flamenco, Lindy Hop, hip-hop, jitterbug, burlesque, Mambo, Bollywood and Broadway have all been used) but the further they move away from the 10 dances, the less interest I have in DWTS, even though I do like some of these dance styles, such as contemporary, very much.

If you want rid of a dance it should be the rumba, I'm not certain anyone knows what to do, it seems to vary with each attempt.

One time it lacks passion, the next there's too much passion, fro what basically looks the same dance, or the lines weren't fluid enough to there was too much of a flow.

Of course if the judges favour the contestant then the passion was great or it was suitably chaste.

I'd rather they ditch the dull rhumba!

I think if they started dropping the 10 dances I would lose interest.

I've only liked one or two salsas on Strictly, but I don't think that is necessarily a reason to drop it, since salsa is a very popular social dance. I'd just like to see less disco salsas. Better music would help.

Me too. Although some people find dances like the foxtrot & rumba boring or dull, those dances (along with the other 8) were what the show was meant to be about.

If I had to choose something to be dropped it would be the American Smooth, which is totally pointless. Every - with a few exceptions - ballroom dance on Strictly is danced as a "Smooth", with breaking hold, etc. Strictly's "Smooth" is simply the same dances with a few lifts - which are not actually part of a real AS.

I prefer the Samba to Salsa because to a non-dancer (me!) there are more recognizable steps than Salsa which all looks the same to me, the feet movement and the fast spins. Apart from that I get bored.

Plus it's not one of the ten. I'd also get rid of Charleston and AS, for the reasons other have said.

I find it very interesting, Rick, that you say you are a non-dancer, because it's usually the non-dancers who prefer dances like salsa, Charleston, & AS. A very refreshing view.

Oh I much prefer the original 10 as I enjoy looking out for the moves I recognise, such as Claudia's fleckerl on Saturday. It just makes the show more interesting looking at the technical detail! That's why I'm enjoying Len more this series with his explanations. I though Craig was good on Saturday as well and I agreed with him about Rinder's heel leads being stronger, don't know if a professional would agree?

I love Salsa but not in the SCD setting. As another FM stated earlier, its quite a "small" dance and seem lost when one couple are dancing it on a floor that size. So I wouldn't be sorry to see the back of it.

However, my prime candidate for the bin is the foxtrot. I find it so boring and uneventful, no matter how well its done.

The charleston, however, I love and it is one of my favourite dances. Its the variety of it which gets me - it allows so much freedom of interpretation. Just giving three examples of my faves from years gone by - Peter Andre, Kellie Bright and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. All wonderfully choreographed and executed but they couldn't be more different from one another.

Apart from Ore & Joanne's (which I hated though they were really hampered by some godawful music and a ridiculous theme), there are very few SCD charlestons which I have failed to enjoy.

I agree completely with both points. As someone who learns latin and ballroom I watch for the dances I dance myself. Why deny that of salsa dancers?

At a push I'd get rid of american smooth, but I do sometimes like the shows version of it eg golden age of hollywood style foxtrot with a couple of lifts chucked in to an old school swing number. I don't find actual american smooth style dancing particularly pleasant to watch perhaps because it is like uncanny valley watching it when I dance a similar but different style.

Your post makes me very happy!

Do you go on the Ballroom and Latin Dance Question thread? Lots of discussion there about technique such as heel leads etc. It's not been used for a few days, so you may have to go through to 'page 3 or 4' to find it.

I love the foxtrot, if it's done badly it can look a mess and the awful music they often use doesn't help but I like it's because it's so simple and beautiful and it doesn't need anything flashy. If I learn ballroom which I want to that's the dance I want to do most, that and the quickstep. I like the AS too because it's like an extra foxtrot but I wouldn't mind if they dropped that and used a different ballroom dance.

I love the rumba too, I usually find the good ones are hot and the bad ones are funny so I'm entertained either way. But the good ones have so much emotion in them too, you can get so involved in the story..When I was like really young I used to cry at rumbas because I really felt them but obviously I don't do that now.

I suppose the dances are all so different, you aren't always going to like all of them. Salsa, samba, paso and cha cha don't usually get much love from me except for the outfits but maybe I'll learn to love them. I don't think I loved the charleston instantly.

They shouldn't drop any of the 10 dances. So if they were to consider dropping a dance, I'd vote for Salsa every time. It's just dreadful 9 times out of 10. And the few decent ones don't outweight the many, many awful ones.

I think it's time for a rethink of the dances and I'd drop the salsa. I'm not keen on the samba, either - the occasional excellent one is OK, but mostly, they're "put the kettle on" dances for me.

(On a side note, I've just discovered "The Peabody", which started life as the quickstep then developed a character of its own. Apparently, for those who don't know it, tunes suitable for the dance include "When the Saints go Marching in" and "Yes We Have No Bananas" ... )
