A bit indulgent I know but I felt like sharing it. I believe I mentioned on here that I had a few temporary jobs last year before being let go for odd behaviour - staring at people (allegedly). It went okay but I'm feeling very flat now. Perhaps I'll have to try hard to fill my evenings with stuff.

Just to add that I'm asking myself some tough questions. Am I really trying to enjoy it or am I determined not to? Could I be more sociable with colleagues and might that help?

Sorry but your post is confusing me. Are you saying you have just landed a full time job, the first in 12 years?

Yes I should have phrased it better. I started today. The only previous jobs in that time were temporary ones.

Ah, right. Congrats on landing a job!

Take each day as it comes, worrying about what may or may not happen is pointless imo.

Is this civil service one that was asking the 'intrusive' health questions? If so congratulations.

Decent pension?

congratulations

Best thing to do is think of it as a fresh start, no one knows you got sacked for staring so just forget it happened

Yes something to do in the evening is a plan then you won't have time to think about whether you are enjoying or not enjoying the job or even trying to not enjoy the job.

Two weeks in now. What can I say. The first few days were a drag, then it was okay for a few days. I had the novelty of being in work, having something to do and earning money. Now the novelty is wearing off a little and I'm feeling down. I've done nothing today, same as last saturday. I'll see if I can find anything to do tomorrow but at the moment I just want to switch off. It's frustrating because I can't honestly say the job has been that bad so far. I've also cut down on my vitamin D the last few days so I'll try upping it again.

Work cannot be expected to provide novelty. One of the reasons it is called work and not entertainment.

Try concentrating on how things were before you got this job, and how delighted you were to get it
Also the benefits that it is bringing you, materially and emotionally

Congratulations - don't stare at people or you'll freak them out and they'll let you go.

Also, don't psycho analyse too deeply. Just concentrate on learning the job and doing it well. The social side will come later when you've settled in. Whatever you do, don't try and force friendliness. Join in a bit, but don't go over the top & don't "attach" yourself to anybody. Try and avoid doing stuff which could be perceived as weird.

Do offer to get the tea, and join any tea and social clubs going. You will also get brownie points for volunteering for things.

Providing you do all I've advised you to, there will come a point of "acceptance" by the crowd, and you'll know when that point has been reached as people will start talking to you socially and making jokes/taking the piss in a humourous way.

Don't muck it up.

How is the job going SirMick? Hopefully you've gotten used to things and being in a new routine. It can be tough adjusting at first. Wishing you the best of luck.
