Has this ever been used for a rumba? If not, it should be and it's very popular just now

According to this list, I'd say it hasn't been used before.

I heard the recently, can't quite remember where or why, and immediately thought of it as a Strictly number. Although they wouldn't be able to resist making it ridiculously literal.

ETA - Is it this years John Lewis Ad? Is that why I have heard it recently?

Since musicals week is happening, I reckon Extraordinary Girl from American Idiot could make a good Paso. Or even the original Green Day version for a normal week.

The title I put up gives all the words of the song:

I've always thought Avalon by Roxy Music would make a fab rumba. I don't think it's been used to date.

Would When Doves Cry by Prince work for an AT? Heard it on the radio the other day and thought it might!

I posted a link to this site early in this thread. What amazes me is the number of times some tunes have been used. When you think of all the good "danceable" tunes that haven't, it beggars belief.

How about the most recorded popular song in the whole world? "Summertime," great for an AS.

Or another much recorded standard. "Someday, My Prince Will Come," for a waltz?

Been used three times before (once for AT, and twice for Tango). Most recent outing waslsat year for Jaliona so doubt it will appear again soon.

I think Lady by Lionel Richie/Kenny Rogers would make a great choice for an American Smooth.

A relatively frequent tune in the SCD world, been used three times if I remember rightly now.

And there you go, I did remember rightly.

It's a Prince song so the chances of finding it on YouTube are slim as they get instantly taken down unfortunately

One of my favourite songs ever.

I think this could be a very nice AS or VW.

Last 90 seconds of Nessun Dorma would be ideal for a show dance. I'm sure the singers could manage it. Would need a brave couple and definitely a one armed lift to end it.

If anyone wants to know which songs have been used on Strictly, when, in what and by whom, the link I posted earlier will tell you.

In answer to the question about "When Doves Cry."

Here's a cut n' paste from the site.

Rachel & Vincent Argentine Tango When Doves Cry Series 6, Week 13
Kimberley & Pasha Tango When Doves Cry Series 10, Week 8
Kimberley & Pasha Tango When Doves Cry Series 10, Week 12
Jay & Aliona Tango When Doves Cry Series 13, Week 10

My favourite tune for the foxtrot - although an unusual version!

What beggars belief even more though is the price some publishers put on performance rights for some of those danceable tunes!

I always understood the BBC had a blanket licence. It would be impossible to apply for individual licences for every bit of music used on all their wavelengths.

Not enough romantic tunes used for the traditional dances.

I must have nearly twenty different recordings of this song from Frank Sinatra to John Coltrane.

My One and Only Love.

That's for recorded music. Performed music is a whole other stockpot of whelks.

You mean to tell people that some the crap tunes we've had to endure over the years on Strictly, the BBC actually paid to use?

If what you say is true, there must be a hell of a lot of paperwork considering the amount of live music played by the BBC. Are you saying the each of every piece is the subject of negotiation?

Not every piece. Many are obviously out of copyright. And not negotiation as such. Prices are generally fixed by the publishers to make it as simple a transaction as picking from a catalogue.(Remember the old gag about 50 quid going out the window every time someone sings Happy Birthday? All true except it was a bit more than 50 quid and that nice little earner has now been quashed by a court judgement in the States.) Nor will it be done by the BBC directly for the most part but the bands and orchestras playing, though in Strictly's case I would think it would fall to the producer.

Given that Strictly has over ten million viewers and nothing they use is actually current, I'm sure the BBC will be able to reach an "accommodation." The use of the tune could boost the tune's earnings through subsequent sales and downloads of various recordings, stimulated by its use on a popular TV show.
So the cost of using some really great tunes so far ignored, would not likely be the reason why they've not been chosen and others used many times, given the budget this show must enjoy.

Common sense says that if the costs of any tune were considered too much, they'd use another of the hundreds of thousands available from different publishers. A publisher would know that.

Music licensing is also why some of the songs used are credited to the "lesser" known performer of said song and not the one that most people are aware of.

I Will Always Love You the other week being a prime example, credited neither to Dolly Parton, the song's writer and original performer, nor to Whitney Houston who made the song far more well known, but to Claudia Streza, who I venture a guess to say most people will never have heard of.
