BBC radio app and music app launch themselves on my iPhone. Why?

Something odd is going on with my iPhone 6s, IOS 10.1.1. I’ve had it new on contract for about a month and a half. Very oddly both the BBC radio app and the IOS music app will launch themselves.

I first noticed it with the radio app and contacted the BBC to ask whether there was a known glitch. They said there wasn’t and that it could only be my phone. Then I noticed the same was happening with the music app.

Because I always keep earphones plugged in pretty much all the time, it isn’t obvious, but it is most definitely happening. I always close apps by swiping them away rather than leave them open to drain the battery, but since this odd behaviour I have been doubly careful to close the radio app/music app after I have stopped using it. But it still happens.

Anyone else come across this? Is there some kind of setting which I have left as ‘on’? Should I simply totally restore the phone to see whether that will help?

IOS may be different but I know on my Windows phone you can set a default action to open an app when a headset is inserted.
Maybe same thing happening here. Try leaving earphones out for a couple of days and see if fault continues.

As a side note, there's no benefit in closing apps to save battery life.

IOS isn't a true multi-tasking platform anyway, when apps aren't forefront on the screen they are effectively frozen and not using up any CPU or having any affect on battery. If music is still playing when you "close" an app, it's because the music is actually being played through an IOS system API hook anyway.

I like to close apps sometimes for neatness and for ease of switching between favourite apps.

Well, that is a possibility, though I have just checked the settings and there is no option of that kind. But I'll follow your advice and see what happens.

I've cracked it: it's the earphones.

If you have headphones plugged in and press the volume buttons, it will start playing the Music app. Try it. Either you are pressing the buttons by accident, or your headphones (or cable/connector) are faulty and the iPhone is interpreting it as button presses.

Easy solution, remove the headphones.

Or it could be 'Suggested Apps'?

Your iPhone could be guessing what app it thinks you want to use. For example, if you plug your headphones in then it guesses you want to use Music so I guess it could also be opening it in the background...

When I get in my car it sometimes suggest Waze for me.

The way to tell is that you can see an icon on the bottom left of the lock screen.

Can you turn 'sugested app' off at all?
